Gary Numan announces – The Pleasure Principle Tour 2010 – Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the landmark 1979 record

June 24, 2010

To celebrate the recent re-issue and 30th anniversary of his classic album The Pleasure Principle, Gary Numan has announced he will come to North America this fall on tour.  On The Pleasure Principle 2010 Tour, the modern music icon will perform in its entirety the album that climbed into the Top 20 on the U.S. charts 30 years ago propelled by his unforgettable Top 10 single “Cars.”  The shows will feature material spanning across Numan’s career, including tracks from his forthcoming album Splinter which he's currently working on in the U.K.

Numan last toured America in 2006 in support of his Jagged album and was set to appear at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this past April, but had to cancel due to the volcanic eruptions in Iceland blocking air traffic. For his 2010 fall tour starting in mid-October, fans will be able to catch him in 15 markets including Orlando, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Boston, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Emilie Autumn will join Numan as the support act in Philadelphia and New York City, with others to be announced for the other cities.

The Pleasure Principle made Gary Numan a huge international solo star upon its release in 1979. Given the soft rock and disco-dominated music scene in America at the end of the decade, the disc pioneered electronic pop music on a new, worldwide scale built around icy synthesizers without guitars or conventional song structures (“Cars” doesn't even have a chorus).  The disc’s impact was crystallized in the U.S. when Numan performed “Cars” and “Praying To The Aliens” an audience of 40 million people on Saturday Night Live.  The music from The Pleasure Principle gave birth to new musical movements in the States over the next decade, including hip-hop, industrial and techno.

As NME recently noted, “every hip-hop production titan ever--notably Dr. Dre--has nicked the opening beats from the track ‘Films.’ The likes of Timbaland and The Neptunes' minimal pop--featuring exquisitely produced drums and simplistic synthlines--are currently heralded as futuristic genius in the 21st century; The Pleasure Principle shows that Gary Numan was doing the same thing 30 years previously. His influence on hip-hop, while rarely recognized, is enormous. His influence on electronic music in general is unparalleled.”

When GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan covered “Films” from The Pleasure Principle last year, he was actually taking hip-hop back to its roots as the track features one of the original break beats, also included as part of the hugely influential Ultimate Breaks & Beats series. In industrial music, both Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson have name checked Numan as a significant influence, with the former currently performing the track “Metal” on his tour. “After hearing 'Cars,' I knew I wanted to make music with synthesizers,” says Reznor. “The Pleasure Principle is great because it's so cold sounding.”

Techno pioneers ranging from Carl Craig to Juan Atkins and Richie Hawtin were also grabbed by this strange, futuristic music, creating a relationship between Numan and dance music that has spawned the likes of the Basement Jaxx's “Where's Your Head At” (samples “M.E.” from The Pleasure Principle) and the “Cars”-mutating “Koochy” by Armand Van Helden.  As the newly reformed Devo recently commented, The Pleasure Principle is “so original and cool and groundbreaking and in a way classic. Like, it still sounds great today…like nothing sounds like that today.”

Off With Their Heads signs to Epitaph Records

February 2, 2010

Epitaph Records is proud to announce the signing of Minneapolis Punk band Off With Their Heads. The Punk road dogs recently took time off from touring to record their second full length album, with plans for a summer release, but left the engine running for a two month long excursion of US and Canada that begins February 3 (Tour Dates Listed Below).

Formed in 2002, Off With Their Heads went through a slew of musicians before finally cementing the lineup with Ryan Young on vocals/guitar, Justin Francis on drums, Zack Gontard on guitar and Robbie Swartwood on bass. Since their inception, the band has released an impressive catalog of music including seventeen 7"'s, one LP and a few comps, and has toured relentlessly in US, Europe, Canada and Japan for the past five years with bands like Against Me, Youth Brigade, The Bouncing Souls and Municipal Waste to name a few.

It was during Off With Their Heads' 2009 tour with Against Me when the band got the call from Epitaph's owner/president Brett Gurewitz saying that he was a fan of the band.

"Off With Their Heads might be the best Punk band going right now, Epitaph needs them; music needs them," says Gurewitz.

"I remember the first time I'd heard of Epitaph," Young adds.  "It was when I was in junior high and Rancid had just released Let's Go.  I saw the video, and immediately went and bought the record.  I got into the compilations, and that started me on the road to finding all these great aggressive catchy punk bands.  Living in a small farm town, I had never been exposed to this kind of music before, and from there I learned about punk.  I guess you could say Epitaph was my gateway into everything that I would wind up becoming.  For that reason alone, I am ecstatic to be a part of one of the biggest influences on my life."

Off With Their Heads are well on their way to carving out their own punk rock story with their modern take on vintage Punk fueled anthems.  As the band begins the next chapter of their career they took the time to record their best album to date.

"We recorded our record in Minneapolis at a studio called The Terrarium," says Young.  "This is where most of the great sounding records that come out of town are recorded.  I think the difference between this record and our last one is that we have enough time to make sure everything is tracked and mixed the way we would like it to be.  We have never in 6 years had more than 2-3 days in a studio,  and there have been parts on every recording that I'd wished we would have fixed and not used the old "good enough" excuse.  The songs stylistically are a mix of something from every record, which is great."

When asked about the new music, Young says "it's a good mix of driving aggression and also mid tempo pop.  Those are our two strong suits, and I'm hoping they shine through as well as they have in the past.  Lyrically, it's about the good and the bad things of the lifestyle that I've chosen for myself."

Stay tuned to www.myspace.com/offwiththeirheads and www.epitaph.com for information about the new album coming this summer.

NOFX, WAX, Dead To Me and Nathan Maxwell & The Original Bunny Gang set to perform at the Rock To Roll charity event in San Francisco

November 4, 2009

The fourth annual ROCK TO ROLL charity event spearheaded by SideOneDummy Co-Founder Joe Sib is happening this year at Slim’s in San Francisco, CA on Thursday December 3, 2009. The event will directly benefit the non-profit organization UCP WHEELS FOR HUMANITY. Headlining the event this year is NOFX. The night will also feature performance s from WAX, DEAD TO ME and NATHEN MAXWELL & THE ORIGINAL BUNNY GANG.

It is estimated that more than 100 million children and adults worldwide need wheelchairs and do not have them either due to lack of access, lack of money, or both. Their lack of mobility stems from accidents, birth defects, war injuries, debilitating diseases, aging, natural disasters and land mines. To address this need, UCP WHEELS FOR HUMANITY begins with volunteers collecting over 230,000 pounds of discarded wheelchairs and wheelchair parts each year from around the U.S. Since a wheelchair in a developing country is an unimaginable luxury, Therapeutic seating specialists then deliver and individually fit the wheelchairs to disadvantaged children and adults free of charge.  Since 1996, UCP WHEELS FOR HUMANITY has helped over 44,000 children and adults living in the poorest of conditions, in developing countries such as Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Ukraine, Mexico, Mongolia, and many others.

Last year, the ROCK TO ROLL benefit concert at The Key Club in Hollywood, CA raised $38,000 for UCP WHEELS FOR HUMANITY. Combined Rock To Roll fund raising efforts have raised over $87,000 since the annual event began in 2006. The average wheelchair costs $150 to refurbish, which means ROCK TO ROLL has directly improved the lives of roughly 580  individuals in need. This is the first year the event will take place in San Francisco.  Tickets go on sale Saturday, November 7. They are available in person at Slim's (333 11th St.) & Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St.) box offices, online at www.slimstickets.com, or charge by phone at (888) 233-0449 & via fax (downloadable fax form available online at www.slims-sf.com)

NOFX released their 12th studio album Coaster earlier this year on singer Fat Mike’s own Fat Wreck Chords label. Rock To Roll founder Joe Sib fronts recently re-formed 90’s punk band Wax; this will bring the band full-circle as Slim’s was host to the band’s last show before disbanding in 1996. Wax recently played the Riot Fest in Chicago and opened for Weezer in Hollywood. DEAD TO ME will release their second full-length album entitled African Elephants via Fat Wreck Chords on November 9. NATHEN MAXWELL & THE ORIGINAL BUNNY GANG, the side project of Flogging Molly bassist Nathen Maxwell, released White Rabbit on Side One Dummy Records in August of 2009.

An online auction will also be set up to raise additional funds for UCP WHEELS FOR HUMANITY. Donated items include autographed memorabilia from several bands including Blink 182, Flogging Molly, Thrice, The Bouncing Souls, Chuck Ragan, The Gaslight Anthem and many more, as well as a prize pack from Innes Clothing. More information regarding the charity auction will be available soon.

The 2nd Annual Part Time Punks Festival

September 29, 2009

The 2nd Annual Part Time Punks Festival - Sunday, October 11, 2009
- At The Echo and EchoPlex, Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles will be the location of the world’s second-ever Post-Punk Festival (the first-ever, of course, being the 1st Part Time Punks Festival held last November, with A Certain Ratio, Pylon, Love Is All, Vivian Girls, Medium Medium and the list goes on and sideways).   The day-long event will once again be held in conjoined venues, The Echo & The Echoplex, in Echo Park, Sunday October 11, 2009 from 2pm – 2am.

The 2nd Annual Part Time Punks Festival will mark the first-ever L.A. appearance of The Raincoats.  Formed in 1977, The Raincoats were the world’s second all-girl Punk band.  Only, by the time Rough Trade released their debut album in 1979, they weren’t making Punk music any more, but post-Punk, and more akin to The Velvet Underground’s first LP or the records it shared the racks with: The Slits’ “Cut,” Young Marble Giants “Colossal Youth” and The Cure’s first LP.  The only reason the band remains lesser known is that their three albums remained out of print for more than a decade before Kurt Cobain tracked them down during a pilgrimage to London in the early 90s. Cobain was also responsible for “convincing” his label, Geffen, to reissue The Raincoats three albums in 1993 (co-writing the liner notes with Kim Gordon), which paved the way for the Riot Grrrl movement. It seems only fitting, then, that Kill Rock Stars will be reissuing the first Raincoats LP the week before the Fest.

“If it weren't for the luxury of putting on that scratchy copy of The Raincoats' first record, I would have had very few moments of peace."
-Kurt Cobain

Here is the confirmed line-up:
The Raincoats, Section 25 (Factory Records), Gang Of Four (guest DJs Hugo Burnham & Dave Allen), The Jazz Butcher, Medium Medium, Kid Congo Powers (Gun Club/The Bad Seeds), Savage Republic, Viv Albertine (The Slits), Abe Vigoda, Weave, Rainbow Arabia, The Intelligence, Christmas Island, Shark Toys , Blessure Grave, Spirit Photography…and Guest DJs Don Bolles (The Germs), Brendan Mullen (The Masque), James Nice (LTM Record Label), Dan Selzer (Acute Records).

California Calling – A night of story telling with Joe Sib

September 22, 2009

California Calling with Joe SibHere is a night of fun you do not want to miss with Joe Sib. In Los Angeles and points well beyond, you know Joe Sib as the host and founder of Complete Control Radio that originally aired on Indie 103.1 and can now be heard on 98.7 FM. Well, for one night you will get to hear the extended versions of some of the craziest Punk rock stories. Joe has a bunch of them and if you do not mind pissing your pants, come out to the Key Club on October 15, 2009. The donation at the door goes directly to Wheels For Humanity.

Here is Joe in his own words to tell you more about how this all got rolling.

”One night at SideOneDummy Records, I was drinking some beers, shooting the shit, and telling some stories with some friends and these guys from a band. As the night ended, someone in the band said to me, “I wish you could come on the road with us, just to tell us more of your stories.”

The next day I started thinking about what that guy said and decided to take a few minutes and tape one of my stories. At first, I felt weird just gabbing into the microphone by myself. But the more I did, the better the stories came out. So, for the next two weeks I would come in to work early, drink some coffee and just start talking. Four of these stories made it on to a CD called “True Stories and Bad Ideas.”

I ended up giving the CD to all my friends and anyone that I thought would find the stories funny and entertaining. After a while, somebody asked me if I would ever tell the stories “live.” So now, on October 15th at The Key Club in Hollywood, it's time to sink or swim with “California Calling.”

DEVO sign ground-breaking worldwide partnership with Warner Bros. Records

September 16, 2009

Label to reissue deluxe versions of are we not men? And freedom of choice on November 3rd

Band launch special tour to perform both albums in their entirety

September 16, 2009 —  Burbank, CA — DEVO have signed a unique, ground-breaking worldwide partnership with their original label home Warner Bros. Records that exhibits the band’s long-time commitment to innovation in all aspects of their career. In the ’80s, the band put the “new” in the music revolution labeled “New Wave” with their synergistic mix of electronic rock, unparalleled theatrical live shows, and self-directed, groundbreaking music-videos — creating a multi-media art assault that resonates in contemporary pop culture. Now DEVO continue to pioneer new territory by exclusively teaming with Warner Bros. Records to internationally service all aspects of the band’s career, including recorded music, touring, merchandising, web services, promotion, ecommerce, sponsorships, licensing, and endorsements.

“Devo have been called everything from geniuses to deviants and have always been ahead of their time,” says Elyse Rogers, SVP of Touring and Artist Development at WBR. “They are brilliant multi-media innovators who express themselves through far more than just recorded music. Their videos, live shows, merchandise, and visual attack are as big a part of their art as the music is. We could not be more excited to continue to break new artistic ground with them while working to redefine the evolving music-industry paradigm.”

“We are excited to embark on DEVO’s latest sonic subversion with the label that first unleashed us on the unsuspecting public,” says the band’s Gerald Casale. “De-evolution is real!” Adds Mark Mothersbaugh: “We wouldn’t be doing it if it weren’t in our genes!”

Warner Bros. Records released six of DEVO’s classic albums between the years of 1978 and 1984. To mark the band’s new deal, the label will reissue deluxe CD and limited-edition colored vinyl versions of DEVO’s 1978’s gold debut Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and 1980’s platinum favorite Freedom of Choice, as well as a seven-inch vinyl single of “Jocko Homo/Mongoloid” on November 3rd.

The day the reissues are released, DEVO will launch a series of very special live performances in select markets (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City, and Toronto), during which they will play back-to-back nights in each city. One the first night, the band will perform Are We Not Men? in its entirety; on the second night, they will perform Freedom of Choice in its entirety. As a bonus, fans who purchase tickets online to any one of these concerts will receive three demos recently uncovered in the DEVO vaults. The three previously unreleased versions, “Whip It,” “Red Shark” (later re-titled  “It’s Not Right” and recorded with different lyrics), and “Turn Around,” were all recorded on a four-track in the band’s rehearsal space at Modern Music in Hollywood, CA. Tickets for most of the shows go on-sale on September 18th. All tour dates are listed below.

Formed in Akron, OH in 1974 as a multi-media experiment, DEVO caught the attention of such pop music luminaries as Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Neil Young, whose support led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records. The label released the Brian Eno-produced Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in 1978, followed by Duty Now for the Future in 1979. In 1980, DEVO released its commercial breakthrough album Freedom of  Choice, which featured the timeless Top 20 hit “Whip It,” followed by 1981’s New Traditionalists, 1982’s Oh, No! It’s Devo, and 1984’s Shout, its last album for Warner Bros. Records. After releasing 1988’s Total Devo and 1990’s Smooth Noodle Maps on Enigma Records, the band went on hiatus. Mark Mothersbaugh applied his aesthetic to the task of composing scores for TV and film features, while DEVO co-founder and principle co-songwriter Gerald Casale applied his DEVO-driven skills to directing music videos for scores of hit bands before becoming a full-time commercial director.

Now original members Gerald Casale, Bob Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Mothersbaugh are back with drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Guns N’ Roses) and cooking up huge plans. De-evolution 2010 will include the release of a brand-new studio album (featuring top-notch producers and collaborators), international festival appearances, and a proper tour of North American, Europe, Japan, Australia, and South America. Stay tuned for more DEVO news, or visit the band’s website, www.clubdevo.com.
