Roger Rivas – First Attack

December 11, 2012

Roger Rivas - First AttackRoger Rivas the organist behind two of Los Angeles’s more cherished groups Los Bullets and The Aggrolites comes at us with the first release off his new label Rivas Records. First Attack stays true to the old school roots in every aspect, from its sound to the vinyl 45 format it’s pressed on.

First attack lives up to its billing with raw energy and a emphasis on the heavy key slamming sound roger Rivas is synonymous with. Mixed and engineered beautifully First Attack is what we have come to expect from the mind and fingers of roger Rivas and is a magnificent showcase of what we can look forward to from Rivas records. The B side of First Attack is the wonderful gem Sabor A Mi (My Taste) and it is just that a small taste of what inspires and drives the man to continue pumping out choice tune after choice tune popular the world over, with its steady rockin sound it delivers in every category already being featured in the rotation of most LA dj’s and clubs. With its limited initial release any true fan would be wise not to delay on snagging themselves a copy.

Be sure to stop by Rivasrecordings.com to secure your 45 before they’re gone. You can also end the year on a high note by catching The Aggrolites shows on December 28th in Solana Beach at the Belly Up Tavern December 29th at the Viper Room in West Hollywood and a New years Eve bash in Long Beach at Alex’s Bar.

The Outfits – Tryin’ on The Outfits

December 2, 2012

http://www.google.com/search?q=The+Outfits+-+Tryin+on+The+Outfits&hl=en&client=safari&sa=X&tbo=d&rls=en&imgrefurl=http://theoutfits.bandcamp.com/track/all-i-wanna-do-is-drugs&imgurl=http://f0.bcbits.com/z/40/34/4034377923-1.jpg&w=1423&h=1411&sig=103128251414844045630&ndsp=24&tbm=isch&tbs=simg:CAQSEgltD8rjN2HG3iHsWX1om8RUFw&ei=wSK8UJ7HHcSLjAKGqYHwBw&ved=0CAUQrBE&biw=1280&bih=592I've been in a funk lately. All the new stuff I've heard has been ok, but not great. I was starting to worry that I was turning into a hipster, that I'd have to trade my boots in for some ironic something fucking stupid, and start going to ugly sweater parties. Luckily, instead, we went down to the local matinee Punk show today and caught Portland, Maine's The Outfits, and now I'm back to my old self.

This band is everything that was great about Pop Punk, back when that meant The Queers instead of Blink 182, even though they've only been around about a year or so. The songs are catchy, fast, and funny, hitting that disturbingly raunchy note where you can't help but laugh.

"What's That Smell?" tackles the ever important question in punk rock; "it smells like old man farts/ and kindergarten barf/ it isn't dog poo/ I know it's not my smelly shoes./ What's that smell?" "On the Rag" is your theme song for shitty days. When singer Sierra Roberts sneers

all my farts smell like eggs
just stepped in cat puke
and now I'm feeling really cute
hungover even though I didn't drink
tried to brush my teeth and barfed in the sink
everything is goin wrong today

it might not make you feel better, but at least you know someone's as bad off as you.

Overall, this album is damn fun to listen to, and any fans of The Queers, The Dwarves, The Eyeliners, and The Runaways should treat themselves to an early holiday and grab a copy.

You can check it out for yourself HERE

Holding Onto Sound – 7 inch EP

November 18, 2012

Holding Onto Sound - 7 inch EPLas Vegas rockers, Holding Onto Sound’s “7 inch EP” is a wonderful little 3 song release from the Vegas four piece incorporating elements of hard rock energy Punk aggression and free music! That’s right not only is this EP solid in the music department its light on the wallet.

The EP can be found via the bands Facebook and accessed and gotten to in a fast and convenient way. The three song EP is admittedly a small sample size of what Holding Onto Sound seems capable of but does offer a glimpse as to the influence and range these guys have to offer.  Fans of hard rock should definitely give this EP a try with its infectious sing alongs to pit slamming hooks its sure to leave listeners wanting more. For the price of FREE and nearly no time involved to download you would be a fool not to give this a listen.

The Young Idea – War Paint 7″

November 7, 2012

The Young Idea - War Paint 7"The Young Idea are a Bay area band featuring members of Whiskey Rebels, Tried and True, Hub City Stompers, Stagger and Fall and Mental Disaster. They're sound can be described as Street Ska. It's Ska Punk but not your usual ska because the sound of street Punk runs through their songs and while they're tunes are catchy they are not over-ally catchy or too poppy. They're just awesome.

I couldn't wait to have their record in my collection and I bought it as soon as it came out from corpitus.com, for anyone who hasn't heard of that site it's really good for any Punk, Oi, and street Punk and for sure worth checking out.

As soon as I pulled the 7” out of the packaging I noticed the cool cover art, it has a really nice design of a gypsy style woman with banana styled art neatly placed around her with roses and the band's logo. This record also comes with a download card which is great for any iPhone heads like me and and a lyric sheet too. I was stoked to put it on.

As the record spun I instantly heard that nice Ska influence that I mentioned and I really like the singers voice, his words are easy to hear and sang in catchy upbeat way that I really enjoy.

There are four songs on this record and they're all really super good and nicely placed, the first song “Citadel” is a good blend of fast and slow and blends right into the next track “Wretch like Me” a faster number with a super good chorus and a great bass sound that rings through the entire song.

The other two songs are rad too and have a nice surfer Punk kind of sound too them. This is definitely worth checking out and I can't wait to hear what the boys come up with next.

Scars and Stripes – The Cost Of Living

October 17, 2012

Scars and Stripes - The Cost Of LivingAs soon as i popped in Scars & Stripes new album "The Cost of Living", I was hit with instant energy and aggression and i gotta say, Im not complaining. With "I Just Wanna Believe in You" kicking off the album, it stirred up feelings and memories of the first time I heard Black President which in my opinion is a huge compliment.

"The Cost Of Living" doesn't let up from then on. The songs blend seamlessly with one another and sound perfectly produced and crafted. This album offers almost everything a Punk or Hardcore fan could really want. I was drawn to "(I Was) a Teenage Asshole" for a few reasons, specifically its one minute Hardcore to the point attitude. In the same vain as "Teenage Asshole" there is "I Don't Wanna Live", another tune that harks back to the slam pits of the 80's with its overpowering snare and screeching guitar pack angst and attitude into just one minute. All in all "The Cost of Living" is a solid Punk Rock album that plays beautifully from beginning to end.
