Show Preview: Mad Caddies with illScarlett – at The El Rey – Los Angeles, CA – February 4, 2014

January 31, 2014

The Mad Caddies are headed to the El Rey Theatre Tuesday, February 4th to kick off a west coast tour.  These Fat Wreck Chords staples have been causing happy dance outbreaks since their debut release, Quality Soft Core, in 1997.

Their good time music is easily thrown into the Punk or Ska genera, but it consists of so much more.  Mad Caddies touch on everything from jazz to reggae,  dixie to rock, and everything in between.

Their signature sound is highlighted by Chuck's powerful vocals, easy to sing along to but hard to duplicate.  Mad Caddies are famous for having a tight horn section consisting of Ed on Trombone and Keith on Trumpet.  These brass masters give the music excitement and flavor, and allow Mad Caddies to touch on numerous musical styles.  The Mad Caddies are known for a driving rhythm section, creating songs that get the audience moving and coming back for more.  And don't forget the groovy guitar work of Sascha, who also is known to throw down a mean banjo riff.

If your debating on hitting up this show, a listen to their live release, "Live from Toronto: Songs in the Key of Eh!" should help seal the deal.  Mad Caddies are a band you need to see live.  They put out great records, but there is a magic in their live performance, an energy that is hard to capture in the studio. When everything melds together just right, when the audience is singing along to Chucks every word, when the pit starts moshing to polka beats, then you will know you came to the right show.

Check out Mad Caddies in Los Angeles at The El Rey Theater February 4th, at 9pm.  They will be joined by Canadian Punk/Reggae rockers illScarlett.  Be sure to check out The El Rey website for ticket information.

Show Preview: 8th Annual Dre Day Featuring : Bad Cop/Bad Cop – Pu$$y Cow -Turkish Techno – and Hands Like Bricks at The Dragonfly – Los Angeles, CA – February 7, 2014

January 23, 2014

It's getting close to that time of year where Los Angeles Punks and gangster rap fans alike, gather to celebrate and pay homage to Los Angeles' prolific producer known as Dr. Dre.

Friday February 7th will mark the 8th consecutive year that lead singer Joe Dana from local Punk band Pu$$y Cow will be throwing a birthday party for Dr. Dre. Each year he has gathered an amazing line up of Punk bands to play a set that includes at least two cover songs of something either sang, written or produced by Dre. Years past have included performances by Toys That Kill, Stab City, The Maxies, The Neighborhood Brats, and of Course Pu$$y Cow, as well as many other amazing bands. This years line up is no exception!

Headlining is the all female Punk band Bad Cop/ Bad Cop. They consist of members of Cunt Sparrer, Angry Amputees, Compton SF, The D'Maggs, The CIty, and The Radio Sweetheart. You may have seen them at Awesome Fest in San Diego last year. This band signed to Fat Wreck Chords and have been growing in popularity, for good reason. Their songs are infectious and packed with power. All four of these chicks bring it and bring it hard.

As always Pu$$y Cow will be setting the roof on fire with an ace stage performance, This year has been promised to have the most Dre covers that they have ever done in one Dre Day set.

Turkish Techno and Hands Like Bricks will also be taking the stage at Dre Day to deliver the goods with seriously fun pop Punk performances as well.

Aside from the bad ass show there are other festivities that have become tradition such as the Eddie 40's hand competition (SEE THE VIDEO below) and a rap off at the end of the evening winners receive some gangsta ass prizes.

Here is some video from last years event -This is a MUST GO TO event

You will also have the opportunity to have your photo taken in The Chronic photo booth and free Dre Day stickers will be handed out as souvenirs.

Last years event was at capacity by 7:45 in the evening. A lot people weren't able to get in, so don't make the mistake that many made last year of straggling to get there. Early arrival is suggested!

Show Preview: Gnarmageddon Fest III Featuring Slapshot – Dropdead – The Stitches, The Havoc – LibĂ©rate – Sex Prisoner – Graf Orlock – Done Dying – Bricktop – The Coltranes – and Fissure – at The Glass House – Pomona, CA – February 8, 2014

January 17, 2014

For those of you who are still sleeping off your New Year's hangovers, Gnarmageddon Fest III has announced their full, official lineup, and this year's show is not to be missed.

Not only will Chula Vista favorites Take Offense be decimating the stage, but this year will also see the reunion of The Havoc in their first show since 2006, Los Angeles Punk veterans The Stitches, and a little headliner you may have heard of: Slapshot.

That's right, Slapshot will be playing SoCal for the first time in 23 years, and only at Gnarmageddon Fest. (And no, I don't want to hear how much longer that is than you've been alive, thanks.)

If you don't know Slapshot, you don't know hardcore (and you certainly didn't grow up anywhere around the East coast). Slapshot has been around since 1985, and though they've done the usual expected lineup shuffling through the years, the current members include original frontman Choke, as well as guitarist Craig Silverman, whose credits also include playing for Only Living Witness, Blood for Blood, and Enemy Within.

As a band, Slapshot have released more than 11 albums throughout their 27 year career, including a new EP just last year. Unlike other hardcore bands though, they've remained true to the old school hardcore sound, not straying into metalcore, rapcore, or any of the other branches of garbage that spawned as the mainstream started to seep in in the 90's.

Live, Slapshot are all energy, hitting you as hard as a puck to the face. Given the length of time since their last visit, this might be your only chance to see them live in California in your life time. Just like the last two years of this event, Gnarmageddon has proven to deliver an epic line up, so be sure to grab your tickets now.

Band Spot Light: The Mormons

January 1, 2014

The MormonsIf you are active in the Los Angeles music scene, there is a huge chance you have seen The Mormons perform. They have been a staple Punk band in the underground scene since their inception in August of '98. They are most well known for their "Mobile Unit", where like real Mormons, they take to the street to spread their word.

This is their Mission Statement

"We don the image of Mormon missionaries symbolizing the dedication, the sacrifice, and the obsession common in most artists. the musician is as fanatical as any religious zealot bent on achieving his or her own individual purpose. while some have chosen to dedicate their lives to Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc., THIS is the path WE have chosen and it is indeed a "religious" experience in itself. our generic uniforms- helmets, white shirts, ties and backpacks- act as a fashion-neutralizer and a 'fuck-you' to the fashion show that conceals the mediocrity that is most mainstream music today. Our mission is simple- to rock out correctly. and if you leave with a feeling of excitement and enjoyment, then our purpose is validated. We are the band known as- The Mormons."

The Mormons

They got the idea for the Mobil Unit when they couldn't get on the bill for big music festivals. The Mormons have crashed many fests including SXSW, FYF, Warped Tour, and Punk Rock Bowling as well as other gatherings like the farmers market (where they weren't received as well). As you can imagine, they always cause a scene and have built up a considerable following of fans with their tactics and talent.

The Mormons

Last spring Big Wheel Magazine was able to capture The Mormons return to Amoeba where they were banned from in 2006 for playing music inside the store.  Here is the footage!

The Mormons

This band has survived 15 years and gone through many line-up changes (16 different members to be exact). Whether you catch the Mormons on stage, in the street, or just rock out to their music on your IPod, all platforms are entertaining. Aside from a unique image and stage performance, The Mormons play their own bitchin' brand of Punk Rock music!
