Christian Death – Fangs on Fur – Catholic Spit – Death on the Radio – The Goons – Nightmare Enterprises – and Untoward Children – at Los Globos – Los Angeles, CA

October 13, 2013

Christian Death - Fangs on Fur - Catholic Spit - Death on the Radio - The Goons - Nightmare Enterprises - and Untoward Children - at Los Globos - Los Angeles, CA - October 13, 2013Another fine Sunday night show brought to you by the people at GITBAM. Tonight is an 80's goth special. First band up was UNTOWARD CHILDREN. A four piece, very 80's Goth sounding band. Female vocalist Veronika also doubled on keyboard and bass guitar and did a really good job.

A very interesting sometimes dark/sometimes gloomy/sometimes Siouxsie (Creatures Siouxsie)/but always very interesting. Great musicianship from everybody in the band. Check them out, their worth it.

Next up was NIGHTMARE ENTERPRISES. These guys looked really young and sounded like a young JFA meets Catholic Discipline. They played a little harder Punk but with keyboards. The singer sang and played keyboards at the same time and fuckin' RIPPED!!  A very original young Punk band with a unique sound and stage performance. These guys are definitely worth checking out.

Next was the GOONS. A 4 piece hardcore band doing early-mid 80's style Punk. These guys didn't really fit in with the other bands but they did add a nice blend of Punk rock. Fast and furious at times and then pretty mellow. Not your typical hardcore act. The bands are getting better and better as the night goes on.

DEATH ON THE RADIO were on next with the great Bloody Mary Powers on vocals and Danny Dorman from Circle One on guitar. These guys get better and better every time I see them. They opened their set with the classic "Say When" by Lena Lovich and did it justice. Marys vocals were very strong and powerful as usual along with great guitar work from Danny Dorman. The rhythm section was right on the beat and also played very well. Mary really puts on a great performance as she uses her body and voice as her art and keeps the audience interested at all times.

CATHOLIC SPIT was next. I really wanted to check out this band as I heard a lot of good things about them. An interesting looking 6 piece band with a female vocalist and keyboardist. They started out with a long instrumental then the singer came out and joined them. Again...a really good young band that's has a unique sound and stage performance (much like that of a modern day Catholic Discipline/Monitor meets Bikini Kill). At times the singer reminded me of the very excellent and beautiful Alice Bag, the way she was ranting and raving on stage but yet had control over the audience. Again...another band of high quality and musicianship.

FANGS ON FUR came on next. Its been awhile since I've seen them but I remember that they were really good. Great early 80's goth sounding with a slight edge to it. Another female vocalist that poured her heart out. Looked like they had a new drummer and bass player since the last time I saw them. This line-up played well together and pulled off a really good set. These guys have been around awhile and know how to play.

CHRISTIAN DEATH finally hit the stage last. They started their set with just keyboards and vocals then the trio hit the stage. They played as they had "Christian Death" projected behind them. Now, a lot of people had told me that they shouldn't call themselves Christian Death because their was no Rozz and no Rikk Agnew. But this was the 2013 version of Christian Death which featured Valor on vocals and keyboards.

They had a female bass player and a drummer who also programed samples from his computer. This line up was nothing like the Rozz/Rikk Agnew line up but were still pretty good for what they did. Didn't see any of the old Goth crowd there, just a lot of younger kids and people who were interested in hearing and seeing what this Christian Death sounded like.

HANK III – at The Observatory – Santa Ana, CA

October 10, 2013

When I think about or hear Hank Williams I think about when I was a child and my father playing those old Hank Williams records on the stereo. Brings back a lot of good memories. Little did I know that some 46 years later I would be attending Hank Williams grandsons concert!!

Yes.... Hank 3 (or Hank the 3rd) would be performing at the Observatory in Costa Mesa and I would be there. Quite interesting really. I didn't know what to expect as this was my first time seeing Hank 3. While  we were waiting in line I noticed your typical country/western crowd, but then I started noticing Punk rockers, stoners, hippys, hipsters, gangsters, parents, grandparents, and just about everyone else standing in line waiting to get in. I thought...OK...this will be interesting.

We got there early and got a table with an excellent view (so I thought). As people were shuffling in, I noticed our excellent view turning into just an "OK" view. Their were people all around us waiting anxiously for the concert to begin. More and more kept piling in. By the time I had to get up for a stretch, it was standing room only and our just "OK" view was now a "no view". So we all sat up on the tables and booths around us as Hank III finally hit the stage.

I was informed that their would be 3 other acts besides Hank 3….all of which would be a different style of music and all 3 acts are Hank 3's bands. This I had to see for myself. The first band was "Hank 3 and the Damn Band". This line-up consisted of stand-up bass/fiddle/acoustic guitar/banjo/steel guitar/and a drummer. They played country/outlaw music and opened up the set with "Straight to Hell". The crowd went wild as Hank played his acoustic guitar and sang. He also did his grandfathers tune "Never get out of this World Alive", and my favorite "Smoke & Wine". This band played for about 2 hours and just when I thought I had seen it all....he starts off right away with his next band "Hank 3 Punk".

I thought to myself....OK... THIS guy is gonna play some Punk rock now? Yeah...right. Hank is playing an acoustic guitar amplified with a stand-up bass player and a drummer. Now, I've been listening to Punk music now for about 36 years and I gotta say I was very impressed. They sounded like a very early HATED/TSOL/CHINA WHITE type band. Very basic 2-4 chord songs but done really well...and very catchy. Really unusual for a country/outlaw band playing this. The crowd seemed to love it and even had a few stage-divers. I really enjoyed this band and would see them if they were headlining somewhere. Hanks voice sounded like it was going through some kind of voice processor and made it sound very one dimensional...but it worked great with this band. Very simple...but very good. Kinda like what Punk originally started out to be in the 1970's. Hank 3 Punk played for about 45 minutes and then just when I thought I'd seen it all...his DOOM/METAL band "A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Domination) take the stage (Literally about less than a minute after Hank III Punk band).

Hank finally grabbed his Gibson Les Paul and started playing out of his giant "GREEN" stacks.....about 4 of them. These weren't 2 cabs on top of each other...these were 4 giant cabs with what looked like 8 12inch speakers in each cab. It was pretty dark except for a few green streaks of light on stage. Their was also images of what looked like monsters from the 1950-60's films on a large video screen behind the drummer while they were playing. Their was also a keyboard player playing while all this was going on. Very slow, sludge, style of music. Kinda like Black Sabbath played at 15 RPM. The crowd thinned out a little and some people were actually slam dancing. This band went on for about 45 minutes then the final band started which was "3 Bar"...a thrash/death metal band.

This line up consisted of Hank, another guitar player, and a drummer playing with no lights on whatsoever for another 45 minutes. 3 Bar played in bandana's covering their face with holes in them for their eyes and nose. 3 Bar was a very high-speed thrash metal band somewhat like DRI meets Metallica. Again, they had the bid screen with weird images on them throughout their set.

After the entirety of the gig, I was pretty wiped out , however, after the 3 Bar set Hank came down from the stage and signs posters/LPs/pictures/and just about everything else. He even had the energy to talk to fans and mingle.

He ended up playing close to 5 hours, played Country/Punk/Metal/Stoner music/and still came off stage to meet his fans!!! What a night!!!

Gogol Bordello – at The Fonda Theatre – Hollywood, CA

October 8, 2013

Gogol Bordello - at The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood, CA - October 8, 2013Absolutely awesome show! A venue like the Fonda makes for a very cool experience with such a energetic band. Eugene and the rest of Gogol were fantastic at rousing the crowd and really working up a frenzy. We were pretty much central on the main floor, right where the mosh pit started really quickly into the show.

The energy and unity that Gogol Bordello brings is indescribable. Real music being played with a passion and zest for life. Gogol Bordello is an amazing live act they hit the stage full force and shoot their energy over and through the crowd,  it never slacks or stops through the entire show. The Fonda was packed, and the music kept you dancing.

They ended it gracefully after 2 hours, including the encore. If you get the chance to see them in a small venue, do not pass it up. I consider the amount of sweating a big indicator of how the show went and I was downright soaked, you will dance the whole time!

Set list:
intro, Ultimate, Not a Crime, Wonderlust King, The Other Side of Rainbow, Dig  Deep Enough, My Companjera, Trans-Continental Hustle, Immigraniada (We Comin' Rougher), Break The Spell, Pala Tute, Malandrino, Start Wearing Purple, Sacred Darling  (ENCORE), Lost Innocent World, Think Locally- Fuck Globally, I Just Realized, Mishto, We Shall Sail.
