Blondie Show Preview: at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA – October 5, 2011

August 31, 2011

Blondie The one and only Blondie is making her grand return to the states this fall as her world tour rolls through Los Angeles in October. Her bands new self released effort “Panic Of Girls” hit the streets just last week and already has quite a buzz surrounding the disc and its first promo/single “Mother”. Panic Of Girls marks Blondie’s first album in nearly a decade and the bands first since their inception to the Rock and Roll Hallof fame in 2006. The band Blondie got their start in the mid 70’s in and around New York City at a time when Punk Rock was blooming at venues like C.B.G..B’s and Max’s Kansas City. The band led by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein were playing a style of rock that blended elements of pop, Punk and disco into their sound which set them apart from just about any other band at the time. They quickly made a name for themselves and found success with their self titled album and continued to do so with their follow up release Plastic Letters. The bands 3rd album is what truly turned the page for Blondie as Parallel Lines shifted the band into world famous mega stars. Parallel Lines charted at No. 1 in the U.K. and 6 of the albums 12 tracks became top hits and singles around the globe; since then the album has sold 20 million copies to date!

Blondie

Blondie would release a few more albums until the bands demise in 1982 which left Debbie Harry a solo artist. Her solo career never matched her previous success, but it kept the bands name in the spotlight which helped a new generation of fans discover Blondie’s music. The band officially reunited in 1997 and has been at it full time since. Their last 2 releases were met with much fanfare and have secured the bands place in the modern music scene. Expect Blondie’s October 5th show to pack all the hits that changed the face of rock forever plus newer cuts that truly would be classics had they been released 30 years prior. With the Club Nokia show being their only southern California concert, this is definitely a show not to miss out on. Long live Blondie!

Naked Aggression / All or Nothing H.C. Split – Bring Me The Head Of

August 29, 2011

Naked Aggression / All or Nothing H.C. Split - Bring Me The Head OfOut of the selection of records given to me to review, the first one that I chose was the Naked Aggression and All or Nothing H.C. Split. Not only was I familiar with both groups, but the album cover immediately caught my attention. Full of disembodied and bloody characters that are widely known throughout the world, such as Mickey Mouse, Ronald McDonald, Santa Claus, and the Kool Aid guy, the artwork goes hand in hand with the title, "Bring Me the Head Of...".

Both artists maintain the theme of dismissing these media characters and what they represent, especially in the Naked Aggression tracks "Take a Stand", "Mr. Businessman", "Party Down". In true anarcho-Punk style, they also address anger, frustration, and the need for change with government ("Wretched Refuse" and "Line in the Stand"-All or Nothing H.C.; "F.S.U", "Shafted", "Bankrupt"- Naked Aggression). Overall, the music on this split is excellent, with the snarls, screams, and fast instrumentals showcasing the passion and dedication for the causes that each band stands for.

Dinah Cancer’s Birthday Party with 45 Grave – at Bar Sinister – Hollywood, CA

August 27, 2011

45 Grave Dinah Cancer birthday partyWhen it comes to birthday partys they usually get mentioned a few weeks in advance and then it is anyone's guess how many will show up. Then there is the birthday party for Dinah Cancer of 45 Grave that was announced months in advance that was guaranteed to be a packed house. The most fitting place for the party was of course at Bar Sinister in Hollywood that is the premier place for all that is evil in entertainment. The party was not to start till 10pm and already at 9pm people were lined up outside of Bar Sinister to insure that they could get in.

The doors finally opened at 10 and the crowd that was on the streets now completely filled the inside of the place up. There were met with the sounds of of Inferno of Joy from San Francisco who kicked off the party. While some in the crowd were not familiar with them, it did not matter as they delivered some seriously great rocking tunes.
Inferno of joy
Special mention goes out to the guitarist who really knows how to get the must sound of of his guitarist that ranged from harmonics to hard driving leads.

During the intermission before 45 Grave was to take the stage, the ever popular Szandora LaVey who is a true representation of the art of Burlesque performed for the packed out crowd.

The time was now coming up on midnite and the place saw another wave of people making their way in before 45 Grave was to go on. Dinah Cancer was now on stage thanking everyone for coming out to celebrate her birthday. Just by looking at her, you can tell that she must be drinking vampire blood because she has remained so ageless, but we are gonna guess she is atleast 36.
45 Grave Dinah Cancer Birthday party
45 Grave played an 18 plus set of songs that included all the standards along with new material off their upcoming record. A few of the highlights of the night included, the birthday cake pinnate that with one hit Dinah whacked into the crowd, Szandora LaVey dancing on stage throughout the show, the happy birthday song along with a 666 cake and the bartender that served drinks so fast considering the large crowd.

Enjoy the 14 minute video and experience the good time you missed for those that did not make it out to the show.

The Stranglers – at Wizard festival – New Deer, Scotland – August 26, 2011

August 26, 2011

The Stranglers - at Wizard festival - New Deer, Scotland - August 26, 2011The iconic Stranglers logo is hung at the back of the stage and the drum risers and keyboard racks wheeled into place.  A cheer goes up as the lights go down and the haunting strains of Waltzinblack swirl from the PA ushering the band onstage. They’re quickly into their positions and straight into a rocking I Feel like a Wog and, from my vantage pointbeside the mixing desk, I can see that the crowd at the front is really bouncing in time with the music. The sound is excellent. All instruments distinct with Baz Warne’s vocals crisp and clear above them.

Peaches, with its unmistakeable lead bassline, is dispatched early in the set to a great response and it’s followed by (Get A) Grip (On Yourself). Any concern I have about this being a festival hits set is dispelled as they launch into a new song, Freedom Is Insane. Starting slowly with keyboard effects like waves on a beach, JJ it changes tempo half way through into an old-school Stranglers rocker. If this is indicative of the new material they’re writing, I look forward to the next album when it arrives.

Always the Sun is up next giving the crowd the chance to sing along on the chorus, before the one everybody knows, Golden Brown, gets trotted out. Baz gets a rest from the guitar for this one as he tenderly sings the lyrics, only playing on the lightly picked solo. Disappointingly, almost as soon as the song is finished, people start to trickle away.  As the simple drum intro signals the start of Nice and Sleazy, Baz asks we wish Jet Black a happy birthday tonight. (I later discover that it’s his 74th!!) It’s always been a favourite Stranglers tune of mine and tonight it’s preyed to perfection. The non-hits set continues with Tramp and Baroque Bordello getting a rare outing, keeping the hardcore fans at the front happy. They’re even more pleased as they play Threatened later in the set.

Their latest album Suite XVI is represented by a stunning Spectre of Love and album closer relentless, while only Lost Control is featured from the previous one, Norfolk Coast. The atmosphere is soured somewhat as some idiot catches Baz on the chest with a full pint of (hopefully) beer. He continues the song without a blink but, when it’s done he announces “Great shot. Ya c**t! Try that again and I’ll come looking for you.” Perhaps this is the reason he disparagingly changes the opening lyrics of Sweden to “Let me tell you about Scotland...” I can’t say I blame him. In the eight hours or so I’ve been here today, I’ve seen more falling-about-drunk people than I did in five whole days at the Rebellion punk fest in Blackpool. More than I’ve seen at any other festival in fact. Bizarre.

Nuclear Device is the surprise set closer but, with several notable songs not having been aired yet, it’s obvious there will be an encore. After a couple of minutes cheering, the band returns to the stage. All Day and All of the Night gets a great crowd response and a mass outbreak of dancing right up to the back of the crowd. Duchess is next up and, while it’s played well, it’s somehow unsatisfying. Maybe the weakest song of the evening. There’s another short break before the band come back for the final encore, treating us to a wonderful version of Hanging Around before JJ bangs the strings on his bass before a spidery run down the strings kicks off a final No More Heroes which gets everyone dancing again and shouting out the chorus. It’s the perfect end to a decent day’s entertainment.
