The Damned – Ed Tudor Pole – Texas Terri Bomb – at The Warehouse – Aberdeen, UK

May 30, 2010

The Damned PhotoIt’s another early one at The Warehouse with 7pm doors on a Sunday night. Not an ideal situation but in Aberdeen you quickly learn to take what you can get cuz Punk gigs are pretty thin on the ground in this city. So we duly arrive at the venue just about bang on 7 o’clock, get our stamps and pitch up at the bar. There’s a couple of dozen people in, filling the tables and lining the bar area. We've just got our drinks and said our hellos to some mates when the rumblings of the first band emanate from the stage. It’s only 7.15 and hardly anyone is here yet – where’s the sense in that?

Texas Terri Bomb PhotoAnyway, Billy and I make our way down to the empty dancefloor and stroll right on up to the crash barrier accompanied by a few more early birds. 3/4 of Texas Terri Bomb are onstage grinding out a riff, slow and heavy. The stick thin guitarist has one foot on his monitor already while the bass player sports an impressive scarlet Mohican. After a minute or two they're joined by Texas Terri herself and the riff they're churning out morphs into an evil sounding Be-Bop-A-Lula. Part Courtney Love, part Juliet Lewis, part Iggy Pop, Terri takes the song by the scruff of the neck as she howls out the lyrics, turning the song into something darker and dirtier than Gene Vincent could have imagined. With barely a pause for breath they slam into the next number with Terri pouting and spastic dancing through it. The band play basic, hard edged, New York influenced punk rock and Terri is the perfect front woman for them, loud, brash and in your face. I recognise a couple of tunes from their album Your Lips...My Ass! Which sound much better in the live setting than on the CD. They seem to be going down well enough with the small crowd lining the front of the stage but Terri isn’t satisfied. She hands the mic to someone as she comes down onto the dance floor and proceeds to take the music to the people, trying to whip up the small crowd into action. It doesn't have much effect though and it’s not really until they trot out a couple of killer cover tunes at the end of the set that people really get going. They tear through Sonic Reducer with as much venom as the Dead Boys did originally and then we get a supercharged take on the Stooges’ I Wanna Be Your Dog which Terri sings from the table-tops up the side of The Warehouse, screaming the lyrics into the stunned faces of the people sitting there. When it’s over and the band leaves the stage, Terri makes her way back there thanking us for coming and plugging her merch. “And one last thing...” she says as she drops her trousers and waggles her arse at us before running off to join her bandmates. Pure Punk rock!

There’s a short break as the stage is cleared and we decide to stick with our position on the barrier as the venue is starting to look a good bit busier. With his tattered glad-rags held together with safety pins and his instrument with string and parcel tape, Ed Tudor pole takes to the stage like a man possessed. His bug-eyed stare and wild grin are slightly disconcerting. He may act the clown but don't be fooled. When it comes to the music, this guy is a serious talent. I don't remember it from his brief stint in the spotlight back in the day but this guy can really play that battered, old guitar. I mean REALLY play, and the sound coming from it is unbelievably sweet despite the holes and scratches all over it and the fact the scratch plate is sellotaped on!
Ed Tudor
Like much of the old Tenpole Tudor stuff, the songs Ed treats us to tonight are very rock ‘n’ roll styled tunes with sharp and witty lyrics. They’re delivered in such a way that gives a rich and full sound which really leaves you forgetting that you’re watching a solo acoustic act. Ed is an engaging chap and his between-song banter quickly has the growing crowd onside. There’s songs about false moustaches, Black-Jacks and being/not being a punk. All clever wordsmithery wrapped up in bouncy tunes that scream out for you to sing along. Which we do of course on the smattering of hits that Eddie trots out. We get Three Bells In A Row. We get Throwing My Baby Out With The Bathwater. We get the story of Ed’s time as a Sex Pistol before Who Killed Bambi is dispatched to hearty applause but the best is of course saved for last. After a pretty entertaining call and response session just to check that we were in good voice, we are treated to a rollicking, sing along version of Swords Of A Thousand Men which gets even the most hardened of punk rockers joining in with the “Hoorah, hoorah, hoor-aye-ay!” bits and leaves everyone grinning widely as Mr Tudor pole says his thanks and bids us farewell. A great performance from a great entertainer.

I'm pleased to see that by now, The Warehouse it pretty full. I spot a few known faces dotted throughout the crowd but there’s no way I'm moving from my spot on the barrier now. The roadies get the stage set up and I catch a look at the set list. I’m pretty chuffed to see it’s been shaken up a fair bit from the last couple of times I’ve seen them with a few things on there I haven’t heard live before. The excitement starts to build. A cheer goes up as Pinch makes his way behind the kit and bassist Stu West straps on his guitar. Captain Sensible makes his way to his usual spot stage right wearing his trademark shades and red beret looking unfeasibly young and healthy. He stands there, arms outstretched milking the applause for a full five minutes before finally putting on his guitar. Finally Dave Vanian appears, also looking fantastic. He’s abandoned the moustachioed Clark Gable look of recent years and once again sports the rocker chic, black and white quiff, sharp shades and tight black t-shirt and jeans. There’s a further short delay as the Captain extols the virtues of the beer from the local Brew Dog microbrewery before finally they crash into Wait For The Blackout and The Warehouse finally starts to move.

The sound is good. Very loud but well balanced where I am at any rate. A manic Disco Man follows and then Stu rumbles out a familiar bass intro. Monty’s staccato keyboards signal the start of I Just Can’t Be Happy Today. This gets a great response from the crowd and the place is jumping. The Captain gets down into the photo pit and wanders along the front row, at one point stopping right in front of me and offering me the chewing gum on his tongue. Just as I’m about to take it, he laughs and ducks away, returning to his spot on the stage. However, it appears that Pinch is clearly not happy with the onstage sound as he’s gesticulating wildly to the sound engineer. He’s not getting through though and gets up from his kit as the song draws to a close and heads over to the desk where a heated debate ensues.

The Captain finally notices he’s gone and asks the crowd whether they’d like him to get back behind the kit so they can continue. Pinch duly takes his place and they kick into Perfect Sunday off the recent So Who’s Paranoid? album. It’s a terrific song and sounds great out front. The problems onstage are clearly sorted out now as well because, after a couple of dodgy moments, Pinch is now grinning happily at the engineer as he pounds the kit. He and Stu really are the unsung heroes of the band. As a rhythm section, they’re really powerful, really driving the songs along. More importantly they’re tight as fuck, giving a solid base over which the Dave and Cap show can be played out. And it’s being played out rather splendidly with lots of smiles and banter between the old hands who are clearly enjoying themselves tonight.

Thrill Kill from 2001’s Grave Disorder album gets a rare outing and slows things down a little, the song’s subtle dynamics underlining the fact that The Damned are so much more than a ramalama Punk act. Not that they’re averse to such things though as a rip-roaring take on Love Song proves. (“Just for you!” says the Cap). I’m delighted as the gentle Gun Fury marks the first of tonight’s tracks from the underrated Strawberries album. It’s followed by the big hit – their version of Eloise. I know they have to play it but it’s one of those songs I’d happily dismiss from the setlist. Tonight however, it really blows me away. At one point in the song, when Pinch lets loose with the double beaters on the kick drum while rolling round the toms, the effect is like an Amyl Nitrate rush and I’m left gasping then grinning. It’s truly incredible. The sad sack who was periodically slurring out “Bring back Rat” this evening really should open his ears and then maybe realise that Pinch is way more than a replacement for the scabrous one.
The Damned Photo Aberdeen UK
The sophistication of The Limit Club – another one getting a rare outing tonight – makes way for a balls-out thrash through New Rose and (unbelievably) Fish. What other band could straddle such extreme opposite styles and make it seem so natural? Tonight they’re short, sharp and raw just as they were created way back in 1976 and they bring scenes of chaos to The Warehouse as the Aberdeen punks, old and new, make their presence felt on the dancefloor. The shoulda-been single Bad Time For Bonzo gets a decent going over before the familiar bassline to Neat Neat Neat booms out, wringing the final ounces of energy from the sweating masses.
The Damned Photo
We know it’s not the end though. Seen the set list remember! After a few minutes, they’re back on and tearing through Stretcher Case Baby and Fan Club. Then the Captain gives us a choice – Jet Boy Jet Girl, Nasty or Shadow Of Love. What do we wanna hear? Nasty wins the toss and the band really lets rip with it. A storming version. After this, there’s a wee bit of discussions between the band about what to do next, how much time left etc. When the stage manager confirms plenty of time, Dave announces that they’re gonna try a song they’ve never done before. It’s a cover of a Sky Saxon (late singer of The Seeds) song which I think was called Satisfy You. It’s a typical 60s garage rocker and when it’s done, Dave laughingly apologises and says it didn’t really work. It sounded fine to me though, if not a patch on the originals on offer. The good Captain starts picking out the extended intro to the first part of Smash It Up and I know it’s the end of the set. Dave misses the cue for his shout but the crowd do it anyway and all hell breaks loose as the song kicks in, a joyous, nonsense romp that perhaps distills the very essence of The Damned down into 2.1/2 minutes of beautiful noise.

In the 30-odd years I’ve been going to gigs now, I’ve seen The Damned more times than any other band. Tonight is the best I’ve seen them in quite a few years. Tight, energized and clearly enjoying themselves playing the fresh material, it looks like they have plenty left in the tank. Here’s to another few years of anarchy, chaos & destruction.

Interview with Pride of Pride and the Vanities

May 30, 2010

Interview With Pride of Pride and the VanitiesInterview by: Bob M
Big Wheel Music Scene Reporter

Exclusive Interview With Pride of "Pride and the Vanities" Formerly of Deadly 7. Hear it here for the first time the real story from D7 Inception to Their fall from grace, to the new "Pride and The Vanities".

Before forming Deadly 7 what inspired you to get into the music business? And where you in any bands before D7?

Pride: Ello...luvie...;) KISS !...Thanx for having me !!!!!!!!!!!! OK, finally... for the record...'Music'...MUSIC has always been around me and in my life...it's innate. Even though I didn't grow up with my father he was a great pianist..my brother plays professional clarinet, my mom was a dancer and played violin, piano and the cymbals in high school..my sister played clarinet for awhile, but didn't pursue it (dont know wtf is up with the clarinet and my familia. LOL ! I played Violin in elementary, piano, "Xylophone"...hahahaha...seriously... and I was in Choir. I love music, but I truly fell in love with dance and gymnastics. I was shy, but very physical and in dance and gymnastics I didn't have to talk, just express myself through movement from sound . At 7 yrs. old that was safe for me and it came very natural more than anything else...

Performing all my life in shows, theatre, and dance was my stepping-stone to where I am now. It was and all it is and ever will be, is an education, a preparation for 'this' and whatever else I attempt to create. I experienced some interesting things waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before DEADLY SEVEN`. A lot of what I'm saying now I was told NOT to talk about when I was in D7. So, here it is (my silly life)...

At 16 yrs. old, myself and 3 other girls, we called ourselves,"The High-Crew", formed a band, but we really didn't know what the hell we we're doing. We played in our friends garage where they played in their band (they were older than us). We came up with a name, "The Virgin sLUTZ", I was recently reminded of this from one of the girls in the group, Kathy my best friend at the time, she was 15. She told me (which I do not recall) I would always say, "One day I'm gonna have a real band !"  I guess I was foreshadowing...or using, "The Secret" without knowing...Hmmmmmmmmmm...Well,'The Virgin sLUTz' never became a real band...everyone found boyfriends, one girl passed away(Francis) and I went my way. SO YES EVERYONE..."THE VIRGIN SLUTZ" was my very 1st band..NOT Deadly Seven ! lol !
Pride and the Vanities
Before joining the show, Splash" (Where I met the future members of D7), I was convinced to do a Pop/R&B group with 2 other girls ( which isn't my personal style of music ). We flew to NYC where I hosted a music festival and we had one performance at another music festival at The Palms. Seriously I can't even remember the name of that group which only lasted 4 months. lol !

Two years later I formed,"Deadly Seven" one of my infamous creations. Unfortunately D7 only really lasted about 4 years then it was abandoned. It was a misfortune, but through misfortunes comes great awakenings and new beginnings...

Who were/are some of your favorite musicians or bands? And what part did they play in your becoming a musician?

This question sux ! lol...I mean, seriously there's soooooooooo many artist that are brilliant and some we've probably never even heard and possibly never will hear. Like my cousin David Williams with AR3A Productions. He was the very 1st producer that listened to D7 when I asked him to produce my new band. I sent him a recording of our voices and he was the 1st person/producer to hear D7 and open the door to our journey. He also informed us that we needed to change our name, "The Bloody Klitz" and come up with another name. He proposed 'Deadly' and our manager added the 'Seven' ,which stuck and we became 'Deadly Seven'. David never got credit for any of that, so now I'm gonna honor that since I don't have any condescending manager criticizing and monitoring everything I say in interviews or band mate objections to my expressions. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...that feels soooooooooooooooo fuckin good!

Back to music inspirations...

I love Punk, but I really love new-wave, electro...electronica and experimental. I've been inspired by many musicians and bands, not only as a dancer/performer, but now a singer/song-writer. Kraftwerk, The Damned, PIL, Missing Persons, The Beatles, The 3 Kings, Bowie, Sex Pistols, UK Vision, The Residents, A Flock of Seagulls, Butthole Surfers, Interpol...I could go on 4ever...and of course `ThrilL kILL Kult...I'm opening for them Memorial Day, Monday, May 31st..Forbes Lounge, Las Vegas. Everyone come and hang..it's gonna be one hell of a show !

You know it really depends what mood I'm in when it comes to music. I like Ravels, Bolero...Swan Lake is inspirational as a dancer/performer and musician !  Yes I listen to classical...what artist doesn't ? Vocally it's a honor to be singing lead in a talented band considering vocal music is probably the oldest form of music, since it does not require any instrument besides the human voice.

What was the inspiration into forming Deadly 7?

It was the perfect timing. I guess my thoughts at 16 manifested and was ready to take action...all the cards were lined up.

Did you accomplish what you set out to do?

With D7 ?? YES and NO. I accomplished a lot with D7 and gave my life to that group, but we could have went further, I wasn't finished. But, like some people in the group told me, 'This is your dream Pride, NOT MINE !' So be it.

It was rumored that Deadly 7 shows were very wild, and equipment and clubs got destroyed? Is that the reason why it was hard to for you to get gigs? And Would you consider D7 a female version of L.A. Punk Icons "The Germs?" It got to a point where they couldn't play anywhere because of the chaos they would cause. Is this true of D7? Are there any memorable or xtra chaotic shows you would like to share with us?

Is this a D7 interview or"PRIDE & THE VANITIES" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeeee.ez..lol...there is no more 'Deadly Seven'. BUT...YES...When there was a Deadly Seven it was a chaotic show...it turned more into a production in the end, but yes we trashed everyone's venue and they HATED us for it... even though they knew about our show and wanted it. As for 'The Germs', the only similarity was... like them we were considered a total joke band in the beginning, but I never believed that. I never once doubted we were a real band even when we were, 'The Bloody Klitz'...NEVER !

Eventually D7 broke up, can you tell us the reason behind the breakup?

WOW ! Where do I start !?  Other than pregnancies, jealousy, laziness, being broke, and NOT getting along creatively ? The truth is No one really wanted it anymore in those last moments...I did, but it died. The manager played his 'Divide and Conquer' game and that just added full to the fire and it burned us all.

People still consider D7 to be a group, what would you like to say to them to dis-spell the rumors.

If D7 were still together we would still be performing, obviously we're not. I am still a legal owner of that company name and entity, so no D7 is not together. I'll leave it at that.  BUT... Do not despair children, behold... you get to witness an evolution ! From the sinful pits of hell and rising from the underground of despair, there is Sanctuary...a future for all with 'Pride & the Vanities".

You now have a new band called "Pride and the Vanities" Their musical sound is a far cry from D7. What gave you the Idea for the "Space-Wave" Style of music you now perform?  And can you give a description of Space-wave for those out there who are wondering what type of music it is?

'SPACE-WAVE'...The term I created for my music. Electro-Rock with a Sci-fi  movie sound. It's  a sound, a feel that takes you on a exhilarating journey musically and visually. This is the sound I was longing to play and perform. I'm a lover of Space, Sci-fi and a future filled with euphoria. Playing the the keytar in D7 was a clue to this evolution and yet again another foreshadowing to this Space-wave  endeavor I suppose.

Who are the other members of your new band?

Dan Synthwalker - Keys
Shon Machine - Cyber-drummer
Wombot Zai - Bk Vocals
Anthology - Bass3000
Sparkz - Guitar
Tsholo -  Space Model # 7
Andromeda - Galaxy Dancer
'KOOLY BOP' - RADIO ACTIVE RAPPER

What do you want to accomplish with Pride and the Vanities?

I want to continue my musical journey and continue to create, learn, explore and uncover the mysteries that lie deep in our inner selves. Discover our own hidden treasures that make us all unique no matter where and what we come from. This is my mission...Mission of Discovery.

What type of fan base are you hoping to get?

Thankfully I have a widely, diverse fan base thus far. From 14 yr olds to 45 yr old R&B women...so I would assume we are Universal ?

You have played a couple of gigs so far, how were you received? Was your audience expecting Pride of D7?, and were they surprised with your new sound?

We were received as a 21st century band. A new light. Shocking, NOT in a chaotic primitive way, but in a futuristic unexpected way. No one was expecting Pride of D7, but they were anticipating Pride 3000.

"Although one might have gone into the show expecting a bloody, shock-filled performance from Vegas’ own Punk-rock princess, an entirely different sort of show was presented, that greatly eclipsed all of Pride’s work with her other group." As commented by:  Jordan Healy - UNLV Rebel Yell - Las Vegas, NV US - Arts & Entertainment Writer

What can fans expect when they come to see a Pride and the Vanities show?

Sounds of a Rockin, sexy, space adventure and a ride they'll never wanna return from!

You have a new C.D. coming out, can you tell us a little bit about it? And where/when it will be available for purchase.

Album : To Much Pride -The Galaxy Girl`
I have a signing & CD listening at Hot Topic (Vegas), May 27th at Meadows Mall 5PM . COME ON DOWN !
Album will be on i-Tunes soon.
Double Down Radio plays my tunes every friday 8pm
My music is also being used for a movie score. Diego Nunez - Black Crow Productions independent movies in L.A.

Do you have any shows coming up anytime soon? If so where can people come see you play?

Yes indeed...Monday, Memorial Day, May 31st 'Pride & the Vanities' will open for 'Thrill Kill Kult'. Im honored and 'Thrilled', no pun intended...lol !  8:30pm Forbes Lounge near China Town, Vegas !  The line-up : Pride & the Vanities, Psychotica, and Thrill Kill Kult !

Do you have any plans for a "Universe Conquering" tour?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm..I like that... Woooohoooo...heehahahahaha !
I'm working with a friend that owns a agency, Spectrum, she has people over seas that tour bands, so yes that is being considered and I will be touring finally. Also I'm continuing to work with Alien Vampires that produced D7 and will be traveling to London do shows with them this summer. They are signed with a  major label in London and have some exciting things lined up when I get there ! It's a dream come true!

If anyone would like to book you who should they contact?  And if any fans would like to contact you do you have a web page or any contact info. for them?

Pride at www.myspace.com/pridevanityllc  &  HM at www.myspace.com/randombeastentertainment

In closing do you have anything you would like to say to your fans, that wasn't touched on in this interview?

Thank you for believing in me and my art and I hope I create something enlightening for everyone ! The adventure has just begun...Welcome aboard !
'SEE YOU ON THE SHIP`

Northeast Records signs Punk Is Dead

May 26, 2010

The world’s only Punk rock band that exclusively plays Grateful Dead covers, Punk Is Dead, has signed to Northeast Records. After playing a series of sold out shows in LA and generating a huge buzz, the genre-bending Los Angeles-based quartet will be entering the studio in June to record their debut album. The yet-to-be-titled full-length is set for a Sept/Oct 2010 release.

Singer & guitarist Jeff Abarta had this to say: “Mike and Garry are close friends of ours, and we are proud to be a part of the Northeast Records family. The opportunity to make a record for our friends makes perfect sense for us. We are joining a stable of very cool Punk bands that do one thing that we appreciate: keep it real…even if what they do has never been done before (that would be us).”

Ceremony- Rohnert Park EP: Sick

Ceremony will be releasing their Rohnert Park album in June and as a preview they have put out this single. The A side is a song called "Sick" which will appear on the forthcoming album and after starting out with a menacing intro it stays at a mid tempo pace with vocalist Ross Farrar snarling about everything that he is "Sick of " fromRepublicans, liberals, Baptists, atheists, and Buddhists to Black Flag and the Cro Mags. In a strange way this song is pretty catchy despite the fact that it sort of just drones along. While Ceremony command an extremely loyal following and are regarded as a sort of cutting edge band, this is not entirely unfamiliar territory. This is not to say that the song is not rocking or that they are somehow undeserving of their popularity, but it's just hard to put a finger on what it is about Ceremony that makes so many kids gravitate towards them so rabidly. They do successfully engineer songs that beg for people to react with heavy mosh parts that often turn into fast and chaotic thrash parts a la Infest or Negative FX and snotty vocals that have angry sing along parts, so in this sense it is easy to see how the formula translates well to live performances, but aside from their approach to non self promotion it is hard to figure out what is so unique about this band that makes them speak to the young generation of Hardcore kids on such an intense level.

The B side is a sort of sequel to "This Is My War" off of "Violence Violence" called "Life As A War." This is the sort of stuff that got the band attention in the first place and attracted both fans of Powerviolence and more traditional Hardcore sounds. The sequel is just as intense as the original and it's definitely safe to say that Ceremony's momentum is only picking up at this point.
