Terezodu – Media Blitz – No Spectators – The Outsiders – Joe’s Garage – at Dipiazza’s

September 29, 2009

Tuesday afternoon I clearly remember sitting in photo class and staring at the show flier wishing school would go and move a little faster. I’ve been waiting all school day for this show, with Joe’s Garage, the Outsiders, No Spectators Media Blitz and Terezodu playing I was chopping at the bit to get out of school. I get out of school get all my stuff ready and then I’m off to the show and excited to see all the bands.

Joe's Garage
So with a small yet anxious Tuesday night crowd Joes Garage is first up. Playing all their crowd favorites, including "kid", "Zombie Attack", "The Eye" and a classic Cramps song "T.V. Set" that everyone young and old seemed to enjoy. With Joe's Garage consistently tight and full of life, it was a great way start the night!
The Outsiders
Old school HB punk, The Outsiders are up next. I have seen them once before and they were good but this time they were even better and they blew me away! They opened their set with "Government Cloud" but "Enough's Enough" was the most rockin song of their set. They were defiantly kickin out classic tunes and even throwin in a great "White Riot" cover by The Clash. So The Outsiders, awesome old school local band that I’m excited to see more of in the future.
No Spectatators
No Spectators are coming up and its their first local show. I’ve been excited to see these guys for a long time. I heard their demo awhile back and I was blown away, they have a tremendous and diverse hardcore sound that’s refreshing and different than other hardcore bands out there and I couldn’t wait to see these guys live. No Spectators opened their set with "Obsession Depression" that got everyone in the room moving and the band jumpin around and from that point on I knew it was going to be a awesome and energetic set. They played all the songs off their demo and they also played a few covers, a Negative Approach song and a Blitz song that got people pitting and singing along. Personally I was having a blast singing the songs I knew and watching the band and everyone rockin out to every song. My favorite song of their set was "For The Takers", with a somewhat slow and mellow opening, that blasts into a the rest of the song, its just a straight up great hardcore song. they sort of played a short set but Ii can live with that. I really cant wait to see these guys again, ill be counting the days cause they are one of best new local bands I’ve heard in long time. If you haven’t heard them check them out on Myspace!
Media Blitz
So with good 'ole Media Blitz up next. You know with them, good times and truly tasteless jokes are always on tap. So after having some fun with the crowd they start in to "Drop Dead" with people singing and pitting it was a good way to start their high energy set. keepin the energy high the whole set even after a little pause for Jason the singer to get a ice cube that was stuck in his pants where the sun don’t shine. The end on a good note with everyone up front sharing the mic during "Get The Fuck Out". They are another one of those bands that I can see as many times as possible and not get bored of them.
Terezodu
Terezodu is Next and last to play. They played their older songs and some news while sporting a new bassist that was full character. They played some of my favorites like "Hitchiker" and "Suppository" but all their songs are good with shredding solos and some brutally heavy riffs. Some pretty vicious pits stemmed from fast paced songs and everyone had fun and were left satisfied yet wanting more. Terezodu was a great way to close out the night.

All and all this was one of the smaller shows, but it was fun times with close friends and i had a blast, I’m sure everyone else who was there would agree with me.

JFA – To All Our Friends

September 29, 2009

JFA To All my FriendsJFA are the kings of Skate Rock and top of that a killer live band. After I moved to Southern California I was absolutely stoked to find out that they play here all of the time. Since I grew up on the East Coast I had never gotten a chance to see them before. At this point I have seen them literally dozens of times and I can say with some authority that "To All Our Friends" fully captures the JFA live experience. It almost makes me sweaty to listen to this C.D., imagining running in circles and singing along with a hundred friends.

The recordings were taken from two shows in Orange County - one at Fitzgerald's in Huntington Beach and one at the Galaxy in Santa Ana.  Included are fourteen songs, most of them being old favorites like "Beach Blanket Bongout," "Preppy," "Out of School," "We Know You Suck," "Jody Foster's Army," "Cokes and Snickers," and the Charlie Brown theme song. We all know that everything about J.F.A. is fun and this C.D. helps to make the fun of seeing them just a little more portable. Word has it that they are in the process of making a record of all new material and I can't wait to see what it sounds like.

The 2nd Annual Part Time Punks Festival

September 29, 2009

The 2nd Annual Part Time Punks Festival - Sunday, October 11, 2009
- At The Echo and EchoPlex, Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles will be the location of the world’s second-ever Post-Punk Festival (the first-ever, of course, being the 1st Part Time Punks Festival held last November, with A Certain Ratio, Pylon, Love Is All, Vivian Girls, Medium Medium and the list goes on and sideways).   The day-long event will once again be held in conjoined venues, The Echo & The Echoplex, in Echo Park, Sunday October 11, 2009 from 2pm – 2am.

The 2nd Annual Part Time Punks Festival will mark the first-ever L.A. appearance of The Raincoats.  Formed in 1977, The Raincoats were the world’s second all-girl Punk band.  Only, by the time Rough Trade released their debut album in 1979, they weren’t making Punk music any more, but post-Punk, and more akin to The Velvet Underground’s first LP or the records it shared the racks with: The Slits’ “Cut,” Young Marble Giants “Colossal Youth” and The Cure’s first LP.  The only reason the band remains lesser known is that their three albums remained out of print for more than a decade before Kurt Cobain tracked them down during a pilgrimage to London in the early 90s. Cobain was also responsible for “convincing” his label, Geffen, to reissue The Raincoats three albums in 1993 (co-writing the liner notes with Kim Gordon), which paved the way for the Riot Grrrl movement. It seems only fitting, then, that Kill Rock Stars will be reissuing the first Raincoats LP the week before the Fest.

“If it weren't for the luxury of putting on that scratchy copy of The Raincoats' first record, I would have had very few moments of peace."
-Kurt Cobain

Here is the confirmed line-up:
The Raincoats, Section 25 (Factory Records), Gang Of Four (guest DJs Hugo Burnham & Dave Allen), The Jazz Butcher, Medium Medium, Kid Congo Powers (Gun Club/The Bad Seeds), Savage Republic, Viv Albertine (The Slits), Abe Vigoda, Weave, Rainbow Arabia, The Intelligence, Christmas Island, Shark Toys , Blessure Grave, Spirit Photography…and Guest DJs Don Bolles (The Germs), Brendan Mullen (The Masque), James Nice (LTM Record Label), Dan Selzer (Acute Records).

Heavy Guerrilla – Pariah Time

September 29, 2009

Heavy GuerrillaSeattle's Heavy Guerrilla play a mid paced style of hardcore Punk rock with some subtle hard rock influences. The first comparison that comes to mind is definitely early D.O.A. and that can never be a bad thing. The band also has a sound that is distinctively Northwestern in a way that is hard to put a finger on but it somehow shares a similar vibe with Mudhoney and the Briefs at the same time. Whatever it is, Urban Guerrilla are super raw and have managed to put out a pretty rocking E.P. here.

They get serious bonus points for the silk screened record covers.

Social Task – Jellmunekita – The Lemmies – Two Yimin Hussies – at Double Down Saloon – Las Vegas, NV

September 26, 2009

Social TaskFirst up was Social Task. Just like the night before These guys did not disappoint!!!! Another high energy performance. Doing all their hits, I only wish they had performed DISNEYLAND. I would love to hear them bang that song out live. They did kick out some fast And furious tunes like Total Democracy, DR2, Next Depression, Can't Stop, and they totally left the crowd wanting more. Drummer Hank is awesome, he can carry a beat like no other. Don's guitar playing is equally as good as Mark Mega's Bass playing, Throw that all together with Scott’s vocals and you have the makings of the TOTAL OLD SCHOOL PUNK ROCK. If it is old school you crave then you want SOCIAL TASK.
