DEVO – at The Fonda Theater – Hollywood, CA

November 3, 2009

DEVO at the Fonda Theater 2009In a time when you see things that are very generic, pre-packaged, done before / updated, it's very refreshing that an original band like DEVO exist. Tonight kicks off 2 nights of sold out shows with this band that started in the late 70’s and in 2009 they remain just as iconic today. This round of shows that dots the US and Canada to mark the re-issue of albums, “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!” and “Freedom of Choice” that remain huge favorites today.

Each of the 2 nights they would play the 2 albums in their entirety. One on each night with the show tonight featuring the “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!” album played from start to finish.
DEVO at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood
A little back drop on this album as sourced so eloquently from Wikipedia, according to an essay by Jerry Casale included on the Complete Truth About De-evolution DVD, the cover of their debut album is based on an image of the famous professional golfer Juan "Chi Chi" Rodriguez that they had found on a golf strap. According to Casale, David Burnam, the manager of business affairs at their label Warner Bros. Records, decided the image could not be used because "he was a golf fan and felt we were making fun of Chi Chi." The band offered to contact Rodriguez personally but were faced with time constraints, due to the forthcoming production of their album. The head of the label's art department, Rick Serini, recommended an artist who could airbrush and alter the face in the picture, while Mark Mothersbaugh offered up a picture he'd procured from a local newspaper that morphed the faces of United States presidents John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. These ideas were morphed with the original "Chi Chi" Rodriguez image to create the cover of the album.
DEVO performing live
As a footnote to the story, the band did manage to get Rodriguez's permission to use the original photo. Since the "morphed" album sleeves were already in production by that time, Serini claimed it would cost the band $2,500 to halt production and reinstate the image originally intended by the band, which forced the band to keep the morphed version. According to Casale, "we were able to come out with something that by the corporate interference and misunderstanding of the business side of Warner Bros. Records, actually unwittingly produced something far more DEVO than the original [image]."
DEVO Are We Not Men
DEVO was way ahead of their time. If you were a fan of this band back at their inception you knew you paid the price at times for saying you were a fan. However the consolation to that is the same people that gave you shit for being into DEVO, where is their music and the bands they proclaimed as more supreme? The easy answer is: Nowhere and certainly not selling out a large venue like The Fonda Theater 2 nights back to back, haa haa to you lame jocks from the 80’s.
DEVO
Opening the show was Reggie Watts who can be found at www.reggiewatts.com or www.myspace.com/reggiewatts. Not sure how to describe the music he was performing that may be a cross between rapping to comedy to some very wild tones going back an fourth. Full propers to Reggie for opening the show because all that can be said is that he was the one chosen by DEVO to open the show.
DEVO
Certainly one of the fun aspects of this show was the sense of community. Every person around could be heard talking about their keystone DEVO album and what it meant to them and the stories were endless.

The VIDEO and photos enclosed with this report speak for them self of the show you missed. Log on to the DEVO website and stay up to date on all things DEVO  www.clubdevo.com

DEVO at the Fonda Theater 2009Devo’s second consecutive night playing at the Fonda was dedicated to playing their epic "Freedom Of Choice" album from start to finish. Though there were children and adults of all ages present, most of the audience was made up of people over the age of thirty five. Weezer – WAX – at The Hollywood Palladium – Hollywood, CA

October 24, 2009

Weezer and WAXThis past Saturday night as I made my way through Hollywood, I thought of all the great venues Hollywood has to offer and how many great shows were going on as I cruised down Sunset. Tonight it would be The Palladium for me! Local stars Wax and Weezer were coming together for a kick ass night of Rock n Roll! This would be the first time Wax and Weezer have shared a stage since 1992 when both bands were starting out in the LA music scene.

Wax recently released  a vinyl 7-Inch, "Hangin' On". It features four unreleased songs that were originally intended for their 1995 release 13 Unlucky Number. SideOneDummy Records released the record and all proceeds are being donated to UCP Wheels For Humanity. Wax, with their original line-up, including Joe Sib, Tom "Soda" Gardocki, Dave Georgeff, and Loomis Fall,  just kicked off a set of reunions shows with an appearance at LA's Darkroom on The 5th of October, it was their first show in over 14 yrs, then  RiotFest '09 in Chicago on the 9th of October.
Weezer
Weezer invited Wax to support them for this hometown show at the Palladium as Weezer is getting set to release their new album "Raditude" on November 3rd on DGC/Interscope records.  These two bands have  a lot of respect for each other, Joe Sib said "We're honored and humbled that Rivers and the guys asked us to play with them. We have a lot of shared history, and this just seems like everything has come full circle." Rivers Cuomo of Weezer said of Weezer's early days with WAX: "Not only had these friends and former equals (at the bottom of the social ladder) actually made it (in the sense of getting a record deal) but we actually LOVED their music, we worshipped their music. It was so catchy, so ridiculously hook-laden. Every part of every Wax song was as fun and heart-stirring as the last, and each part lasted only as long as it was fresh and then was replaced by the next."
WAX
I was super excited about this assignment, a great line-up. While Wax and Weezer have two obviously different styles, their music actually goes hand in hand with their light hearted, fun, songs, and catchy hooks and lyrics! Seemed like a natural choice.
WAX
As Wax was getting ready to take the stage, the crowd was surprised to see Johnny Knoxville come out to introduced them, and with that, Wax took to the stage with a fury! Joe Sib is a thoroughly entertaining front man, he was all over the stage and his band backed him up with an equally intense stage presence. This didn't seem like a band that just started playing again after 14 yrs!  They sounded great and their set was packed full of charisma.
WAX
I always loved this band as a teenager and felt so grateful to be at The Palladium covering this show for BigWheel. I never thought I would actually be watching a live Wax show. I really hope this is the start of a permanent come back for Wax because they are honestly one of the most entertaining and fun bands I have had the pleasure of experiencing!
Weezer
After a short intermission, the crowd of 4,000 was pumped and ready for Weezer! This would be my first time seeing them, so I was pretty pumped too! The band played an intro and the energy built up til' it finally came to a head and Rivers Cuomo jumped onto the stage as the song transitioned into Hashpipe, one of the best intros I have seen, it was awesome!!
Weezer
As the show moved along, they played hit after hit, a couple of covers including  Black Sabbath's  "War Pigs", and some new material including a duet "(If your wondering if I want you to) I want you to", "Can't stop partying" ,and "Pokerface". It was a great mix of old and new material.
Weezer
Even though Weezer has made it into pop legend status, they are still loved and respected by the Indie world of music, because of their originality. They put on a great show! Go see them if you get a chance and remember to pick up a copy of "Raditude" when it comes out in November!
Weezer

Los Angeles Movie Premiere of – Let Them Know, The Story of Youth Brigade and BYO Records – Hollywood, CA

September 10, 2009

Los Angeles Movie Premiere of - Let Them Know, The Story of Youth Brigade and BYO RecordsThursday night marked the premiere of "Let Them Know," a documentary which tells the story of L.A.'s Youth Brigade, and the Better Youth Organization, a Punk rock cooperative turned record label. Along with the showing of the movie came live performances by Youth Brigade and two of B.Y.O.'s most iconic bands- Swingin' Utters and 7 Seconds. Prior to the showing, director, Jeff Alulius and his co-producer Ryan Harlin briefly spoke about the film and Alulius ultimately described it as "A film about Los Angeles and a story that wasn't being told that well."
Let Them Know The Story Of Youth Brigade and BYO Records
Like many Southern California tales, "Let Them Know" starts with a story about surfers. B.Y.O. founder and Youth Brigade front man/guitarist, Shawn Stern talks about how surfing influenced his life perspective and introduced him to the world of subcultures. From there "Let Them Know" is about evolution and how surfing led to Shawn and his fellow Stern brothers (Mark and Adam) finding Punk rock and starting there first band, The Extremes, who are described in the movie as a "tame" New Wave band who committed the Punk rock cardinal sin of using keyboards.
Let Them Know - Mark and Shawn Stern
Then Sterns then attempted to start a Punk rock/swing crossover outfit called the Swing Skins Brigade (doomed by the fact that they were unable to find enough band members who were able to play Swing Music and willing to shave their heads) and of course moved on to starting Youth Brigade, which led to diving into the hardcore Punk rock scene, establishing the Skinhead Manor Punk rock house, the Better Youth Organization as a theoretical group that passed out fliers and turned into a record label that also booked some of the most talked about Punk shows in L.A. in the early 1980's.

In many ways the movie is about failed attempts. The Swing Skins Brigade was ruined by band geeks who would not commit to the Punk rock lifestyle, the Skinhead Manor was ruined by Punk rockers who would not commit to living a more responsible lifestyle, Youth Brigade took a back seat to the B.Y.O. record label and played two ill fated tours of the United States and Europe respectively. However what is important in this story is not whether or not the Stern brothers succeeded in everything that they were trying to do, but rather that they attempted to do something positive in a scene that was being consumed by its own negativity.
Let Them Know Punk Rock Movie
Most of the interviews in "Let Them Know" are feature the same core group of people- Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat/Dischord Records, Matt Skiba of the Alkaline Trio, Fat Mike from NOFX/Fat Wreck Chords, Kevin Seconds and Steve Youth of 7 Seconds, the Adolescents' Steve Soto, and members of the Bouncing Souls and the Briefs. Locals to Southern California may also be happy to see appearances by Brendan Mullen who ran L.A.'s infamous Masque club, and Boz from Orange County's The Crowd and who incidentally was also a resident of the Skinhead Manor.

With the influx of Punk rock movies that have come out in the past few years, it was important that "Let Them Know" had its own voice to set it apart from its counterparts. The way that it does this is mostly by using humor. Much of this humor fits into the "It's funny because it's true" category, from Fat Mike's jabs at several records in the B.Y.O. catalog, to members of the Bouncing Souls doing impressions of Shawn Stern. The funniest part of the movie is when interviewees do impressions of their favorite lines from the "Another State Of Mind" documentary including Ian Mackaye delivering Marcell's "Life is not amusement" line, and Matt Skiba doing an impression of the French Canadian chick bragging about "beating up faggots for money." The grand finale is delivered by several people doing an impression of Youth Brigade roadie, Brian Swilley's instructions on how to slam dance before Swilley himself reenacts the scene.
Let Them Know Youth Brigade
The rest of the movie spares no details. Everything is covered here. The first few B.Y.O. Records released are raved about - the "Someone Got Their Head Kicked In" compilation, Youth Brigade's "Sound and Fury," Aggression's "Don't Be Mistaken," and the early records by 7 Seconds and S.N.F.U...There is also talk about shows that B.Y.O. put on at Godzilla's and the infamous "Youth Movement" shows (accompanied by vintage news footage), and the birth of The Royal Crown Revue, who finally gave Jamie Stern his moment in the sun and helped to spearhead the late 1990's Swing revival (either ironically or appropriately a throw back to the failed Swing Skins Brigade idea). Even B.Y.O.'s annual Punk Rock Bowling tournament in Las Vegas was covered.
Youth Brigade photo
About twenty minutes after the movie was over Youth Brigade started playing, opening with "Violence" which all too often is omitted from the band's set these days. Shawn Stern followed this song with a classic one liner - "We're Youth Brigade and there's no such thing as Christian Punk rock. It's all just bull shit." A few other vintage Youth Brigade tunes were mixed into their set, such as "Fight to Unite," "Did You Want to Die," and "What Are We Gonna Do About the Boys In Blue," which was started by a chant from the audience. The crowd gave big reactions for "I Hate My Life" and "Punk Rock Mom."
Youth Brigade Stage Dive
One of the coolest things that we saw was an enthusiastic Punk rocker stage diving several times with a 12" record in hand. For most of the set Shawn and Mark Stern were joined by the two new members of Youth Brigade, Joey Balls and Johnny from Blue Collar Special and Old Man Markley on bass and second guitar, but at the end of the set Adam Stern made an appearance to play "Where Are All the Old Men Bars," "Fight to Unite" and of course "Sink With California."
Youth Brigade Sink With California
Swingin' Utters delivered a set of rowdy Punk rock songs with a great performance by vocalist, Johnny Peebucks who managed to make his own forehead bleed by hitting himself with a microphone. The highlight of their set was the Utters playing "Petty Wage" and "No Eager Men" back to back which sounded as fresh as they did in the 1990's.
Swingin Utters
7 Seconds finished the night's festivities and although they experienced some technical difficulties with the vocal mics not being as loud as they should have been, their performance was still great. They played tons of classic songs like "This Is Angry," "Walk Together, Rock Together," "Here's Your Warning," "We're Gonna Fight," "The Crew," "One Big Guessing Game," "Young Til I Die," and they ended their set with "Trust."
7 Seconds photo
It was awesome to see 7 Seconds play their first L.A. show in years and their performance was an excellent way to cap off a great night of Punk rock history.

Liskfest 2.0 – at Oak Canyon Ranch – Irvine, CA – September 5, 2009

September 5, 2009

Liskfest 2009Last year's Lisk Fest was a great event with highlights being performances by Gorilla Biscuits, Cro-Mags, Ignite, and H20. The fest, which is put on by Chris Lisk of Speak 714, is turning out to be an annual get together of old guard Orange County Hardcore types with big name acts from all around the country. This year The Cro-Mags returned along with Ignite and H20, but were also joined by late 80's straight edge hardcore bands, Insted and Bold.

I got to the show pretty early in the day so I could check out my friends in Terezodu play on the local stage. There were some minor complications including a ten dollar parking charge (which I managed to avoid). Also many people seemed pretty unhappy with the ten dollar charge for buying tickets at the event (this made tickets forty dollars all together as they were thirty dollars in advance). This wouldn't have been so problematic if they had disclosed ahead of time that tickets would cost an extra ten dollars if they weren't bought in advance. Hopefully this will not affect the attendance of next year's Lisk Fest as otherwise it was a great event. Anyway Terezodu played a cool set and made the best out if a situation where only a hand full of people were watching them.

A few hours later Ignite played on the main stage. Most of the songs that they played were from "Our Darkest Days," but they did throw in "Embrace" for the more seasoned fans and a cover of U2's "Bloody Sunday." Ignite were followed by H20, who put on a great show, playing songs from all of their records. Vocalist, Toby Morse was accompanied on stage by his six year old son, Max who jumped around on stage and even sang with his father a bit. H20's classic New York Hardcore sound showed through in songs like "Family Tree," Thicker Than Water," "Still Here," "Guilty By Association" (Freddy Madball's lines were delivered by Scott Vogel of Terror), "Nothing to Prove," "I See It Us," "Five Year Plan," and "One Life, One Chance." H20 have always been a crowd favorite because they play catchy songs that are easy to sing along and dance to and they have always had enough wisdom to mix in their most current material with their older songs.

Connecticut's Bold opened their set with "Talk Is Cheap" and although vocalist, Matt Warnke's voice had some wear and tear from the band's recent European tour, it was fun to see them play some old hardcore classics. While Bold didn't have as many peole watching them as some of the other bands there were a few people who were clearly very stoked to see them. After Bold played I watched bits and pieces of Strife's set, which was a bit of a weird trip down memory lane. Strife were never a favorite band of mine in the 1990's but they did give a high caliber performance of heavy hardcore which reflects some Southern California influences.

Whenever the Cro-Mags play it is an event and they are never a band to be missed. Since it was a John Joseph/Mackie version of the band and not a Harley Flanagan version all of the original material played was from the seminal "Age of Quarrel" album. "Seekers of Truth" and "We Gotta Know" sounded heavy as fuck alongside other great tunes like "Hard Times," and "Life on My Own." As always they also played some Bad Brains covers- tonight they were "Attitude" and "Banned in D.C."

With all of the great band playing at Lisk Fest, Insted were still the highlight of the whole event. They brought the most energy out of any band playing and since it's such a rare occasion for them to play it made their performance pretty special. Vocalist, KevInsted moved some monitors on stage, commenting that he didn't like how they created a barrier between the band and audience and made stage dives more difficult. "We'll Make the Difference" and a cover of "Young Til I Die" were huge crowd pleasers and hopefully some younger kids who weren't familiar with Insted were turned on to their music by this performance. It's not easy for any band to follow the Cro-Mags, but Insted did the job well.

VANS Warped Tour – at Home Depot Center – Carson, CA – August 23, 2009

August 23, 2009

VANS Warped Tour 2009 in Carson CAThe final stop for the 2009 Vans 15th anniversary Warped Tour was situated at the Home Depot Center in the city of Carson. The Carson show included a few of the same acts that Warped Tour's first show in Pomona did, but the line-up was noticeably different. The concert opened its doors early before noon, and the crowd's excitement could be felt all around as many rushed to figure out which stage to migrate to, and which bands to check out. The last stop of the tour was about to blow up and end on a good note.

Punk Rock Legends at VANS Warped Tour
The Punk Rock Legends stage included the U.K Subs, and the band made their way to the stage shortly after 1:45pm. The U.K Subs had tremendous support from the crowd, and the area around the stage was filled with fans, both young and old. The circle pit saw its fair share of action, and it was pretty energetic for it only being a little after 12pm, which is probably around the time the crowd usually wakes up every morning. U.K Subs played well known songs such as, "I Live In A Car", "C.I.D", "Warhead", and "Tomorrow's Girls". When the U.K Subs played their last song, a few audience members could be heard screaming for an encore. Though none was given, U.K Subs fans all agreed it was a set that did not disappoint, and even surpassed their expectations.
VANS Warped Tour Main Stage
Streetlight Manifesto hit the Hurley.com stage at 2:45, and rude boys and girls packed the area, ready to skank and get crazy. Streetlight Manifesto had a set filled with jokes, fast paced music, slow music, circle pits and skanking pits, and above all, trombones! The music was catchy and upbeat, and fans sang along to all their songs, holding on to each other and picking random invidiuals from the audience to dance along with. Streelight Manifesto played popular favorites like "Failing, Flailing", and "Here's To Life". Near the end of the band's set, Streelight Manifesto announced into the microphone how much they hate when bands play covers. They then played NOFX's "Linoleum", and NOFX fans all rushed into the pit to sing along and create a mess with their mosh pit. Streelight Manifesto finally left the stage, and the audience cheered and made a lot of noise for the ska band.
DOA at Warped Tour
Around 3:45, many Punks present at Warped Tour commuted to the Punk Rock Legends stage to see Channel 3. Channel 3 was originally scheduled to play at 2:45, and D.O.A to play at 3:45. A last minute schedule change caused the two bands to switch places, causing a few fans to accidentally miss D.O.A. Nevertheless, Channel 3 played to a rowdy crowd that maintained a relatively wide circle pit for their set. The band played the majority of their most well known songs, such as, "I've Got A Gun", "You Make Me Feel Cheap," and "Mannequin". Channel 3 had a very dedicated crowd, which were all sad to see the band depart from the stage shortly before 4:30pm.
Channel 3 at Warped Tour
Pour Habit took the Kia Kevin Says Stage at 5:05, and only played a 20 minute set. Although their time on stage was short, the band went on to pour all of their effort and energy into their set. The crowd for the band's set was a relatively good size, and the mosh pit got started between all their bigger and brawnier men. Pour Habit toured with NOFX earlier this year, and as a result, many of the people in the crowd checking them out sported NOFX shirts. Pour Habit is definitely a band to check out, and the audience definitely left in good spirits after their set.
Slam dancing at the mosh pit at Warped Tour
Less Than Jake's performance was already in progress upon Pour Habit's departure. Less Than Jake took over the Vans Main Stage at 5:15pm, and the area around the stage was massively packed. Less Than Jake had spunk, and the band's overall personality was perfectly conveyed during their set. At one point, the band made the crowd look at two different streetlights in the crowd, both which were on opposite sides. The band singled out two individuals which were each standing at each separate streelights. A male in a purple shirt stood at one streelight, and a female in shorts stood at the other one. The band then ordered the crowd to lift both individuals up, and force them to crowd surf and switch places. The audience willingly did so, and both individuals swam above the crowds to reach their designated streetlights. With antics like these, it was impossible to not have a good time and appreciate the stage presence of Less Than Jake.
Fishbone at Warped Tour photo
Old school third wave ska band Fishbone began their performance at the Punk Rock Legends stage at 5:45pm. Ska junkies crowded the stage, and skanked along to every song the band produced. The music was fast, quirky, and even the slower songs had a lot of edge to them. When the band covered Sublime's "Date Rape", if you were in the surrounding area outside of the circle pit, you could see people rushing and running from all around the outside, trying to get into the circle pit to skank and dance to the well known cover. Fishbone's set was insanely fun, and a treat for all of the audience.
Slam Dancing at Warped Tour
FEAR arrived to the Punk Rock Legends stage at 6:45, and older heads made sure to dominate the circle pits, and show the youngsters who's really boss. FEAR opened their set with, "I Love Livin' In The City", and played other favorites such as, "Rodeo", "Disconnected", and "Camarillo". The circle pit was nonstop, and seemingly vicious. Fans appeared to know every lyric to every song, and as always, vocalist Lee Ving made sure to provide good times and good laughs to the audience by including his often vulgar, yet tasteful jokes.
Edward Colver Punk rock photographer at VANS Warped Tour
It was shortly before 7:15pm that many people ran and caused a scene trying to get to the Vans Main Stage ASAP. At 7:15, NOFX was finally going to play, and fans all over were eager to get a good spot for the performance.. When the band appeared on stage, NOFX announced that now that Bad Religion was off the tour, NOFX was officially the best band on the tour. Fans all around laughed and applauded at the comment. The band opened up with "Intro", and went on to play "Linoleum", "Murder The Government", "Green Corn", "Stickin' In My Eye", and even included "The Quitter", which is off their latest album, "Coaster". Vocalist Fat Mike made jokes with guitarist El Hefe the entire time, and included some pretty inappropriately appropriate jokes that were all made in good fun. At one point, NOFX covered Rancid and played "Radio", which audience members had a good time dancing to the slow and steady beats of the song. After an hour, NOFX decided they were tired of playing, and notified the audience that their set was finally over. The band then played, "Kill All The White Man", inducing one of the heaviest and most intense circle pits of the night. When NOFX departed from the stage, audience members chanted, "ONE MORE SONG", and others simply applauded for what seemed like 10 straight minutes. NOFX wasn't joking, they really were the best band on the tour, and the audience can attest to that.
The Adicts and Kevin Lyman at Warped Tour
Finally, after a long and hot day of waiting, all sorts of individuals made their way to the Punk Rock Legends stage to take part in the magic that an Adicts show delivers. Punks, Greasers, Preps, and even older people packed the area where The Adicts were performing. The Adicts did not fail to amaze the crowd; with vocalist Monkey constantly showcasing his talents and illusions with glitter and tricks, audience members were left mesmerized and in a happy sort of daze. The band played "Steamroller", "Chinese Takeaway", "Bad Boy", "Numbers", and many more crowd favorites.
The Adicts Warped Tour
It was ridiculous to see just how full the entire area was over The Adicts, and even the stage right next to them was halfway full with fans just there to see The Adicts. When the beachballs came out near the end of the band's set, everyone knew the band's time was almost up, and everyone made sure to fully indulge in the last minutes of the set. The band played "Viva La Revolution" last, and then played their "Ode To Joy" medley, and dismissed themselves the way that they only could: lights, color, sparkle, and fans cheering and screaming at their presence.
The Adicts at VANS Warped Tour 2009
As the massive crowd left the stage area, it was clear to see that Warped Tour was pretty much done. The majority of the stands were gone, trash covered the floor, and even a few stages were in the process of being taken down. With only 3 bands left playing the night, the majority of the people made their ways to the exit, and exhaustion was a thing we all shared in common. As the dark night sky began to take over, a feeling of fulfillment seemed to sweep over us.
VANS Warped Tour 2009 trash clean up
The 2009 Vans Warped Tour was finally over, and we had all taken part in the last show of the tour. Warped Tour was everything you expected and did not expect, and the experience of going to an all day music festival such as this one, adds a sense of accomplishment, mainly for being able to last through a whole day of sun, music, temptation, and circle pit after circle pit. Tiring, yet completely worth the exhaustion, Warped Tour provided everything that a music festival should always make sure to provide: nonstop music, culture, and a meeting ground for all the different scenes that foster our underground community. It's a brilliant idea.

Rebellion Festival 2009 – at Winter Gardens – Blackpool, England – August 6th through August 9th 2009

Rebellion Festival 2009 SubhumansFirst on the agenda for the day was 3cr on the Arena Stage. One of Punks most offensive bands with songs like “Club me like a Seal” and MILF (Mum I’d like to F**k). When he hasn’t taken the hint after an hour or so, I swing my legs out of bed and sit up. Aaaargh. My throat is on fire Read more
