Operation Damayan: Relief in the Philippines

December 26, 2013

I was burned out. I had been the frontman for The Stitched Lips for about 6 years already. Eric Martinez, who now plays bass for the Black Mambas, and Sergio Sandoval, who is now focusing on his career and is soon to be married, formed the band in our hometown of Bell Gardens, Calif., while we were seniors in High School.

Eventually, Luis Herrera, who is currently the drummer for Sonny Vincent and the Testors, the Sorrows and the Nasty Souls, joined in and we established ourselves as an upcoming Los Angeles Punk band that was roughly in the style of the Stooges, the Kids, and the New York Dolls.

We were doing really well before disbanding. We were playing good gigs, we opened up for more established bands and started carving a mark into the scene, but the slightly more fame we got, the more discontent I felt. I wasn’t making any money and it really was like a job. I lost interest, and we decided to split. That was the end of a huge chapter in my life, rock ‘n’ roll was everything.

In May of 2011, about one month after we split up, I enlisted in the Navy. I went in there expecting to receive a job that consisted of hard labor, I mean; I did join the military after all, right? Well, much to my surprise, I was offered the very rare job of Mass Communication Specialist (MC), basically, my job as a U.S. Sailor is to document the Navy’s history and mission through photography, photojournalism, videography, broadcasting, news writing, graphic design, print and production, and public affairs tactics. I lucked out, didn’t I?

After boot camp, I went straight to my specialty school. I went through six months of training in Fort Meade, Md. There, I found I was pretty good at photojournalism. I was given orders to the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), based out of Yokosuka, Japan.

I went back home for about three weeks before reporting to my command. I played my very last show at my house and it was the best going away present I could ever receive. More than 100 people showed up to this private show to see the greatest band that never was. We sold our never before released EP, and they all sold out. People went nuts. It was a great feeling, but it was time to leave it behind and start a new chapter.

I’ve been at this command for a little over a year now, primarily working as a photojournalist aboard the ship. I write stories and take photos of our daily operations, ranging anywhere from launching and recovering aircraft, going up in helicopters to photograph ship formations, various training evolutions and community service events during our various port visits. Occasionally, we get sent to different ships or different commands to provide media coverage for various operations.

The ship departed for its 2013 patrol June 26. We visited Australia, South Korea, Singapore and finally Hong Kong. During our Hong Kong port visit, our ship was recalled. The Republic of the Philippines was hit by the super typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. The typhoon left many areas in the Philippines decimated, with many dead in its aftermath. Our mission was to go to Philippines and provide relief for those who needed it most. We were to provide water, food, and medical care to disaster victims. The George Washington media team and myself were there to document it.

On Nov. 14, the ship arrived in the Philippines. I departed the ship around the afternoon via MH-60S Seahawk from the “Golden Falcons” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12; I was supposed to be temporarily assigned to the Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Lassen, where I was to document the ship’s participation in the relief effort, but first, I had to get dropped off in Tacloban Air Base. The helicopter had to make a few supply drops before they dropped me off on the ship.

We flew over Philippines to our destination and I saw firsthand the aftermath of the typhoon. From up above, I saw the trees that looked like they were blowing in the wind, but there was no wind blowing. I saw villages that were surrounded by debris and rubble from buildings that were missing roofs, windows, and walls or were just completely gone. There were trucks and cars that were flipped over.   Every city that we flew over was in ruins.

I had no idea how much worse it was down there than I could see from above. The Seahawk soon dropped supplies into Tacloban. Sailors were waiting in the rain, directing aircraft. As soon as these supplies came in, Sailors rushed the pallets to get them ready for distribution. I didn’t know how long the Sailors were there, but they sure as hell looked busy. They were all Sailors who volunteered to help. They were probably doing more intense work than what they were doing on the ship. They didn’t care, they all wanted to help.

The first thing I saw when we reached the air base was the line of disaster victims that were waiting to get evacuated. They were coming out of a building that was barely standing. These people were waiting in the aftermath of a chaotic environment and all men, women, children and elderly had a blank, desperate look on their face. Most of them only had the clothes they were wearing. Few had backpacks, purses or some form of luggage. Many were soaking wet from the on-and-off again tropical thunderstorms, but the ones that were helping them the most, were the Marines assigned to Logistics Battalion 4, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

Marines were lined up, escorting and loading supplies onto MV-22 Ospreys and C-130s. They were tired, wet and their uniforms were all messy. They had been there all day and night helping the people that needed it most. They never once fell out, they made sure everyone got to where they needed and got the supplies they needed. They didn’t stop; they kept on going.

I walked through lines of disaster victims, aid relief tents, debris and trash and made my way onto where the Marines had set up their tents. Once I got there, I spoke to a Marine officer who was curious about the transport capabilities we had on the ship. He then informed me that there were more Marines coming on foot from Manila and pointed out that they were trying to make room for them. I looked over to the open field and noticed that there were Marines clearing out debris, trash and bodies from the grassy areas. I made my way over and was going to start taking picture, but ultimately decided against it. I didn’t want family members or friends to find out their loved ones were gone through a photograph on a newspaper.

A couple of hours and photographs later, I was informed that I would not be going to Lassen. I went back on the Seahawk and we made quick drop off in a small island. It was torn apart. People rushed out of their houses to get our attention. They kept signaling at us to land. We circled around a couple of times but we found no suitable place to land the Seahawk. We had to hover over a small patch of land right off the island to drop off supplies. The Aircrewman had to hoist himself and box after box, 50-pound bag after 50-pound bag; he lowered himself to deliver those supplies. People were scrambling to get them and many others thanked and waved as we flew off. It was great to see joy in such a devastating area.

I got back to the ship and I was told to keep my equipment packed just in case I were to go out again. Later that day, I was informed that I would be going to the Ticonderoga class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63). I spent my first day on Cowpens settling in, but the next day I was up on a Seahawk from the “Scorpions” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 49. For the next four days, I flew with them to document everything they were doing. We would pick up water from George Washington, pick up food from Tacloban and deliver them to different areas.

At one point, we picked up a couple of Army Rangers who assisted us in evaluating which villages needed supplies and medical attention. We would drop them off, pick up supplies, drop those off, and pick up the Rangers and any evacuees they brought with them. I recall them bringing on a woman who had a bandage wrapped around her hand. I asked one of the Rangers how she got injured. He informed me her hand was severed by debris as she was trying to pull herself into shelter during the typhoon. It was getting infected without the proper medical treatment. I didn’t see here after we dropped her off. I was just glad these guys were there to help.

Back on the Cowpens, the crewmembers started collecting candy, cookies, cereal, chips and any snacks they could get their hands on. The ship store was running out of items because of all the snacks people were donating. Some went ahead and wrote messages on the packaging. Others made goody bags and left a note in each bag. Every time we handed them out, kids would rush to us, laughing and smiling. They would shake our hands and gives us high fives. At one point shortly after handing out snacks, a woman grabbed my hand and kept thanking me as tears streamed down her face.

The look on her face, the children laughing and smiling as they waved by, the feelings and emotions I felt and continue to feel is very gratifying. The experience I had there was something new that I’ve never experienced. Seeing it on television or photograph doesn’t do it any justice.

Although our armed forces are an asset of war, many seem to overlook the work that we do to help those who need it most. There were many Sailors who voluntarily gave up their rack, ventilated spaces, and hot food to go sleep in a tent and work a full day carrying box after box of heavy supplies onto helicopters and I can tell you that none of them have any regrets.

SKAmania Holiday Extravaganza Featuring Pat Kelly and The Clarendonians – The Delirians – Chris Murray – and The Steady 45s – at Los Globos – Los Angeles, CA

December 7, 2013

Saturday December 7th 2013, the anticipation had reached a fever pitch as the return and arrival of two beloved entities converged upon Los Angeles. First the long awaited return of SKAmania!

One of LA’s more cherished regular events, whose tenure atop the Los Angeles Ska/Reggae scene has brought some of the more memorable LA performances as well as rare appearances, ranging from The Pioneers, The Skatalites, Ken Boothe and Eric ‘Monty’ Morris to name only a handful. And with its return to prominence, has brought with it the first Los Angeles appearance of The Clarendonians. As has become the norm with all SKAmania events, the line-up boasted top-level talent from beginning to end.

As early arrivals found out, the standard had been set high from the first song. Kicking off the night was The Steady 45’s who’s masterfully crafted harmonies and heavier than lead horn section had the second floor of the Silver lake nightclub bouncing and swaying. Immediately patrons flocked to the front of the stage to dance in a circle or pair off with their well dressed partners dawning tonic suits and Fred Perry dresses. With their steady rise over the last year we’ve seen The Steady 45’s grace a number of wonderful marquee’s, and rightly so. Traditionalists basked in their well-tuned performance as they maneuver from original scorchers to Jamaican relics such as the Ken Boothe classic  ‘Artibela’.

After a wonderful 45 minute set The Steady 45’s made way for Acoustic Legend Chris Murray providing back up for yet another 45-minute gem.  In true Chris Murray fashion his set ranged from past to present encompassing the entire spectrum of his acoustic and studio works. Those like myself foolish enough to wonder off for a Heineken Sponsored beer failed to remember no Chris Murray Set is ever the same, as he launched into the fan favorite ‘Love Flame’ causing some to abandon hope in drinking, as the dance floor only further tightened in a sea of skanking and singing fans.  Only a few days removed from a recent east coast trip Chris Murray’s smooth voice and slick guitar work was as dominant and perfect as ever, LA fans have come to remember it from the one time weekly reggae showcase Blue Beat lounge. After Chris Murray’s set their was a small and well needed break for fans and especially the bands, some members even pulling quadruple duty for the night, had the opportunity to recover and brace themselves for the final stretch of joy and dancing.

It was now time for The Delirians to claim dominion over the old stomping grounds, the Los Globos Stage. Poised to overtake the Los Angeles Ska/Reggae community once again, the young men from East LA had a daunting yet easily surmountable task ahead of them as they performed their own set as well as supplying the perfect pairing of high quality musicianship the catalog’s of Pat Kelly and The Clarendonians deserve. Fans have no doubt come to endear themselves to the Delirians and their music, chanting and singing in unison, shoulders rubbing and dancers jockeying for position along the front of the stage. All the while grooving to old favorites and being treated to new songs including the just unveiled “Come And See”. The first third of The Delirians night progressed seamlessly as they took a step back to welcome the Clarendonians to Los Angeles for the first time.

Celebrating 50 years of Clarendonians music, the Clarendonians were welcomed to Los Angeles with a conquering hero’s ovation. Some waited a lifetime for the opportunity to see these remarkable men, some with closed eyes clutching drinks and singing to their hearts content. The emotion and energy was overpowering and present, even as Peter Austin dropped to his knees, tears of joy and humility streamed from his eyes even recalling songs inspired by heartbreak. The moment was definetly not lost on The Clarendonians or those in attendance as every song was sung with such passion even playing old time classics ‘Darling Forever’ ‘Shoo Bee Doo Bee’ ‘Bye Bye Bye’ and ‘Rudy Bam Bam’. With the once in a lifetime performance now in the books and in the hearts and memories of SKAmania loyalists, they now turned their attention to welcoming back a one, Pat Kelly.

No stranger to LA or SKAmania those not new to the scene knew what kind of clout and ability Pat Kelly brings to his performances. Adorned in a beautiful white suit he shimmered just as brightly. Bathed in the red and yellow glow of the Los Globos lights drinks were tossed while the now maximums capacity venue cheered on in joy for timeless classics ‘Talk About Love’ ‘Whiter Shade Of Pale’ ‘How Long Will It Take’ and my personal favorite ‘ I Wish It Would Rain’.

Never a disappointment he performed at the highest caliber even treating the fans to an encore and more of his trademark voice.  The memorable holiday extravaganza went off without a hitch as friends embraced and share in a collective happiness only SKAmania could provide. The time had come to wonder home partake in a few dozen street tacos and begin the countdown until the next SKAmania masterpiece.

The Bangles – Three O’ Clock – Dream Syndicate – Rain Parade – at The Fonda Theatre – Hollywood, CA

December 6, 2013

The Bangles - Three O’ Clock - Dream Syndicate - Rain Parade - at The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood, CA - December 6, 2013For fans of the LA Paisley Underground sound there was no better time than the 1980s and no better place to be than in Los Angeles. Music trends have come and gone since many times over, but one thing remains; people in LA love their hometown bands and continue to do so decades on into their careers. December 6th 2013 went down in local rock history as a day where fans got to see crucial bands of that specific era on one bill in support of a great cause as well.

    Rain Parade

The aforementioned bill was as follows, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, the Three O’ Clock, and The Bangles. If you had an interest in the Paisley Underground then you were definitely one of the many in attendance Friday night as the Fonda was a packed house. If you weren’t there then you really missed out on perhaps a once in this lifetime kind of concert.

    Dream Syndicate

Every band on the bill was as on point as any fan could have hoped for. Every hit in each of the bands respective back catalog was played to a crowd who was as receptive as one could find on a Friday night. There were some fun covers thrown in for good measure like the Syd Barret fronted Pink Floyds “Lucifer Sam” by The Three O’ Clock.

    The Three O'Clock

It was The Bangles hour long plus set that featured an introduction from none other than legendary KROQ Dj Rodney on the Roq’ Bingenheimer and more hit songs than any of the openers sets. Whether it was an Bangles original like the fun “Want You” or Simon and Garfunkel cover “A Hazy Shade of Winter” The 3 original members harmonized live on stage just like they did on the record, perfect pop.

    Rodney Bingenheimer

It was over an hour of perfect pop and all around greatness from a band who wrote fun many fun songs that have simply lasted the test of time. For those who happened to miss Friday nights show you are in luck as The Bangles are playing The Whiskey A Go Go early next year.

Show Preview: The Weirdos with The Middle Class, Audacity and Corners – at The Echoplex – Los Angeles, CA – December 13, 2013

December 6, 2013

Show Preview: The Weirdos with The Middle Class, Audacity and Corners - at The Echoplex - Los Angeles, CA - December 13, 2013Where are you going to be on Friday the 13th? If you answered, “At The Weirdos show at the Echoplex!”, you would be correct. Formed in ’77 by the Denney brothers, The Weirdos were one of the first (and best) Punk bands to come out of LA. Their first stint ran from 1976-1981, but they reunited quite a few times in the following for some one-off shows and tours. One appearance was at this year’s Punk Rock Bowling. If you missed that show, you missed a massive amount of boots and ‘hawks flying about the crowd.

The Weirdos only released a smattering of singles and EPs during their first go-round, and some compilations in the 90s and 00s,  so if you wanted to experience their music, you had to catch them live. Unfortunately, many of us weren’t around then or old enough to go to shows, so we missed out on hearing John’s growling vocals and Dix’s fast and hard guitar riffs. We can remedy this on the 13th by heading over to the Echoplex.

The other band on the bill not to be missed is Middle Class. Hailing from Orange County, the Atta brothers (and Mike Patton) were the progenitors of hardcore Punk and the sound they helped to create spread across the country, influencing many of the up and coming bands then (and now). Though only together until ’83, their sound evolved over the years and with each EP release. Though only playing a rare show here and there, Middle Class still puts on a fucking fantastic set.

Though I haven’t had the chance to check out the other two openers, Audacity and Corners, I can only guess that these will be the next bands to put on your radar. The Weirdos and Middle Class are fucking awesome, and I can’t imagine them having openers that suck, so make sure you check them out.

See ya in the pit!

Slade and Sweet – at The Music Hall – Aberdeen, UK

December 1, 2013

Slade and Sweet - at The Music Hall - Aberdeen, UK - December 1, 2013As a seasoned gig-goer I go to lots of events over the space of a year but, this last 2 years, I can honestly say that the glam rock extravaganza that is Sweet and Slade has definitely been my favorite gig of the year.

We may all be folk of a 'certain age' but we still know how to enjoy ourselves and we were all in agreement that last night's near capacity gig in the Music Hall was absolutely fabulous. Sweet came on first of all and started the evening off with New York Groove. It's hard to believe the band have been around since the late 60's, although Andy Scott is the only remaining original member and Bruce, has now been with the band for around 20 years.

Slade and Sweet - at The Music Hall - Aberdeen, UK - December 1, 2013

From the first few bars of New York Groove, the guys threw themselves into the show and it was clear they were enjoying themselves as much as the eager audience. A highlight for us down at the front, was the way Andy interacted with a little old woman, who was probably in her 80's and she put the rest of us to shame by dancing all the way through the set. I'm sure it made her night when Andy actually spoke to her. All the old favourites were played including “Blockbuster”, “Wig Wam Bam”, “Teenage Rampage” and “Hellraiser” to mention just a few.

Slade and Sweet - at The Music Hall - Aberdeen, UK - December 1, 2013

There was a poignant moment when Andy spoke of Brian Connolly, and dedicated Love is like oxygen, to his memory. At the start of the evening Andy had said how they always play totally live and, as if to prove the point, when one of his guitar strings broke he quickly grabbed another guitar and hardly missed a beat. Telling us all again that, yes, we do play live!

Slade and Sweet - at The Music Hall - Aberdeen, UK - December 1, 2013

After a short interval and just enough time for us all to get our breath back, it was time for Slade to come on. They arrived on stage to the theme of Thunderbirds, which they've been doing for a few years now  and went straight into playing Gudbye to Jane. As in previous years, Dave Hill stole the show with his cheeky smile and antics on stage. John Berry did an outstanding job of taking on a lot of the lead vocals. A stand out moment for me was when they performed Coz I love you.

Slade and Sweet - at The Music Hall - Aberdeen, UK - December 1, 2013

“My oh my”, “Far far away”, “Cum on Feel the Noise” and “Everyday” also featured in the set, which came to a rousing close with the forever favorite “Merry Xmas Everybody”, for which the band all donned Xmas hats, just to get us more in the festive mood.

Slade and Sweet - at The Music Hall - Aberdeen, UK - December 1, 2013

The only down side to the evening was that it was over all too quickly and I'll definitely have it on my Santa list for them to make a return visit to the Granite City next December.
