Preview of: Hootenanny – at Oak Canyon Ranch – in Irvine, CA – July 2, 2011

June 20, 2011

Hootenanny 2011 July 2nd The Hootenanny will be coming back to Oak Canyon Ranch, it has been a highly anticipated festival every summer since 1995, featuring legends such Chuck Barry, Joe Strummer, The Stray Cats and many more. This year's line-up may possibly hold  the most diverse line-up  this festival has seen with a great mixture of Punk, Rock-a-Billy, and Swing!Powerhouses The Dropkick Murphy's and Reverend Horton Heat will be headlining, however, the supporting acts are creating just as much of a buzz! Seattle natives Murder City Devils will be performing, this band has only played a handful of shows in the last 5 years which have sold out instantaneously. Other supporting acts include X band member John Doe, Swinging Utters, MoJo Nixon, Royal Crown Review, and Supersuckers, just to name a few.

Along with the music, as always for the Hootenanny, Oak Canyon Ranch will be hosting a huge car show that is sure to draw a plethora of pin-up hunnies and greasers. There will be clothing and accessory vendors. Not to mention the food and drinks are delicious and fairly priced every year. Of all the outdoor festivals that happen during the summer, Hootenanny has maintained a large crowd of die-hards that attend every year, without losing the intimate feel of a gathering amongst friends.

The grounds are clean with plenty of shade and the ponds provide a nice breeze. The lines run smoothy and the organization of the festival is always on point. If you haven't had the chance to attend, this year's line-up is a great reason to start.

Hootenanny 2011

Preview of: 2011 FYF Fest – in Downtown Los Angeles, CA on September 3, 2011

June 19, 2011

FYF Fest 2011FYF Fest is returning for its 8th year of production on September 3rd with vast improvements made both on the production side and with the line-up. The Labor Day weekend event will consist of a plethora of bands ranging from alternative, punk, indie, dance, electronica, and instrumental. Set to headline the event, Descendents will be making yet another appearance in the LA area, their second since their stop in Long Beach for the Rise Against tour. Other bands with large fan followings also consist of the Dead Milkmen, Death from Above 1979, Explosions in the Sky, Broken Social Scene, Cold War Kids, Kid Dynamite, OFF! and several other diverse acts. Although there is a complete line-up scheduled and released for the event, FYF founder Sean Carlson promises a surprise to be revealed on the day of the concert.

The improvements made on this year's concert have been made as a result of the mishaps which engulfed the entirety of the 2010 festival. Last year's oversights, some of which consisted of a staggering $4 a water bottle and hour long lines to attain it, prompted Sean Carlson to commit new changes to the festival. One of the improvements to the festival involves a new found partnership with promotional stalwart Goldenvoice, which was done to prevent organization mishaps made last year.

Also changing is the location, which is moving from Chinatown's Los Angeles State Park straight into downtown Los Angeles, near First and Main by City Hall. To further remove issues from last year's event, there will now be more entrances added (including a separate one for VIP), water bottles will run at $2 each, and there will be three times as many food vendors as there were last year. Another feature, which isn't necessarily an "improvement" but rather a convenience, is that there will also be a fourth stage added to the event.
The Descendents
With the variety of acts and similarity to Warped Tour and Coachella's versatile line-up, FYF Fest has something for everyone. For those who lean more toward the punk rock side, Descendents as headliners makes the trip to FYF Fest worthy, especially since the band's stop in Long Beach consisted of them opening rather than headlining. OFF!, which features Keith Morris of Circle Jerks, is a newer band that upholds old school Hardcore Punk.

Also holding down the Hardcore Punk genre are Philadelphia natives Kid Dynamite, who are renowned for their melodic hardcore style. Dead Milkmen, who have recently released their first studio album in 16 years titled "The King in Yellow," will be making an appearance again after a 13+ year hiatus and death of bassist Dave Schulthise. The four mentioned bands alone are enough to make a trip to downtown Los Angeles come September 3rd.

Tickets for the event run at $35 each on TicketWeb, but fans have been warned that the price will eventually increase to $40 as the day of the event nears. VIP tickets are also available at $99, however, you must be 21+ to be able to hold a VIP ticket. For those who don't have internet access, tickets are available at select record stores, though there is an additional $2 fee per ticket. Los Angeles area record stores selling tickets are: Origami Vinyl, Headline Records, Permanent Records, Freakbeat Records, Fingerprint Records and Vacation Vinyl. For residents in the Inland Empire: Spin Records, Rhino Records, Mad Platter, and Glass House all have tickets available. For Orange County fans, Vinyl Solution is the only store with tickets available.

Line-up: The Descendents - Death From Above 1979 - Explosions in the Sky - Broken Social Scene - Cold War Kids - Guided By Voices - Simian Mobile Disco - The Dead Milkmen - Girls - No Age - Kid Dynamite - Glass Candy - Dan Deacon - Four Tet - The Head & The Heart - YACHT - The Weakerthans - Chromatics - Cults - Olivia Tremor Control -  Smith Westerns - OFF! - The Strange Boys - Japandroids - Nosaj Thing - Ty Segall - Mister Heavenly - Pink Mountaintops - Avi Buffalo - Cass Mccombs - Title Fight - Fools Gold - Tijuana Panthers - Touche Amore - Purity Ring - Twin Sister - Future Islands

Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 at The Glasshouse – Pomona, CA

June 18, 2011

Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 at The Glasshouse - Pomona, CA on June 18, 2011The first annual Gnarmageddon Fest made its way into Pomona's Glasshouse Saturday for a celebration of both Hardcore and Punk rock. Originated through the collaboration of Media Blitz's Jason Schwartz and Concussion's Danny Lyerla, Gnarmageddon was an event that many fans of Punk took an interest in upon seeing flyers handed out at past shows, and most especially, through social networks like Facebook. The event arrived, with doors opening at 3 pm and the first band up by 3:30 pm, and the all day event was fortunately able to provide ins and outs until 7 p.m. The line-up consisted of Hooded Justice, Static Thought, Concussion, Dogends, Media Blitz, Circle One, Rotting Out, Resist and Exist, JFA, Sabertooth Zombie, Ill Repute, DOA, and Agent Orange.
Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 Pomona

Hooded Justice
Hooded Justice commenced the festival with an extremely short set for a small amount of people. The Orange County locals performed their power violence style of music vivaciously, and pleased the crowd with two covers- Napalm Death's "You Suffer" and "Mindless" by Infest. When their fifteen minutes of fame were up, they thanked the crowd and quickly left the stage.

Static Thought came up promptly after, and to the dismay of many, did not perform to the best of their ability. They seemed to lack motivation and didn't seem to have any interest in performing their set. Many left to go socialize and drink outside the venue, while others courteously stayed throughout their entire set.

Concussion, which features Gnarmageddon co-founder Danny Lyerla, held down the ground for hardcore punk as they unraveled fast and aggressive styles during their set. Concussion performed with extreme energy and showcased an act that was nowhere near tedious or redundant. The band's music sounded like a mix between Toxic Narcotic and Killing Time, with subtle Minor Threat subtleties. Concussion ultimately fit the bill and did it justice.
Dogends Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 Pomona
Ventura natives Dogends performed after Concussion and played a 20 minute set that further led the crowd down the hardcore road, though a large portion of the band's set also maintained a strong punk influence. It was during Dogends' set that the Glasshouse contained more people in at last, allowing the venue to become a little more crowded and full. Following Gnarmageddon, there was a slight chance Dogends would play Zoey's Cafe shortly after, but to the fans at Glasshouse that evening, the latter event was of no importance because their presence at Gnarmageddon further augmented the line-up and experience.
Media Blitz 2011
Recently releasing a new 7" titled "A Voice of Our Own," Media Blitz has been on the go over the last few weeks touring and playing shows throughout both Socal and NorCal. Media Blitz, who are heavy contenders for the hardcore Punk scene in Orange County, performed with a massive presence made most prominently by vocalist and Gnarmageddon co-founder Jason Schwartz. The band played a longer set than the earlier bands, and had enough time to play both older and newer songs.
Media Blitz Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 Pomona

Circle One
Circle One, which is one of the older bands in the line-up, played to a crowd riddled with anxiety, and which began to increase the rowdy level upon the band's lead ins. The old school hardcore band that originated in Pico Rivera currently maintains newer members from the original line-up, including Nick Manning (Vice Squad, The Voids) on drums, and Omar Ervin on vocals. Circle One upheld old school traditional hardcore, meaning they carried out music resembling the styles of Black Flag and Minor Threat. Although the band's music is considered to be on the hardcore level, the band's old school nature slightly classified it more into the Punk side of Gnarmageddon.
Rotting Out Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 Pomona
By the time Rotting Out took the stage, the floor had become overrun with hardcore kids, who were anxiously awaiting the group. The San Pedro hardcore band opened up with the first track from their latest album "Street Prowl", which has the same title as the album. They primarily played most of the material off "Street Prowl" for this performance; Rotting Out also threw in songs off their 2008 demo "This is Just a Life", which was recorded with their old vocalist. It seemed that Rotting Out seemed to fulfill the goal of Gnarmageddon, which was to unite the hardcore and Punk crowds. Rotting Out gave the best performance of the night thus far, putting maximum energy, aggression, and passion into their set, and the audience gave the same back by stage diving and fighting over the microphone to angrily chant all the lyrics.
Resist and Exist
Political Punk band Resist and Exist humbly emerged onto the stage next, with the members of the band speaking on the behalf of the rights of animals as an intro. Resist and Exist maintained their Anarcho Punk style, similar to that of Crass and Icons of Filth, for a lively following. They threw in a bit of poetry and spoken word into their set, along with their songs that had themes of animal rights, war, and women's rights. Resist and Exist proved to educate and entertain the crowd at the same time, and left the stage as modestly as they came on.

JFA
When it was finally JFA's turn to hit the stage, there was a shared feeling of gratitude for the band's presence as a result of the long wait to finally see one of the bigger bands performing the event. JFA witnessed a pretty brutal pit, which was likely a result of both hardcore kids and punks coming together and merging "dance" styles to the beat of JFA. The pit was packed, heavy, and nonstop. JFA performed the usual from "We Know You Suck," consisting of "Jody Foster's Army," "Beach Blanket Bongout," "Out of School," "I Don't Like You," and more. Closer to the end of the band's set, they did their renowned covers of both the Charlie Brown theme song, and War's "Lowrider." The band played for almost 40 minutes, and were not able to give an encore due to scheduled set times.

After JFA, the last hardcore group was up next: Sabertooth Zombie. Because they were the last hardcore band, many of the hardcore kids would be leaving and made it their mission to leave Gnarmageddon with a bang. The Bay Area natives opened with "Decayed Decayed" and continued with a good mixture of old and new material. STZ graced fans with a glimpse of their newest stuff by playing a song off their upcoming EP titled "Human Performance". During Sabertooth, people were dancing and stagediving with a ton of rage, with one girl even stepping on security's head as a base to jump into the crowd. After the vocalist Cody riled up and pissed off most of the crowd by bashing on Los Angeles and the baseball team the Dodgers, they performed a few more songs and concluded their set with "Curly Locks".
Ill Repute at Gnarmageddon Fest 2011
Most of the modern hardcore kids left by this point, which gave the Punks more room for Nardcore legends Ill Repute. During their time, it was almost impossible to be on the floor without moving, whether you were in the pit or getting knocked over from people in pit. The hardcore Punk group fulfilled every great expectation that the crowd had, performing hits like "Sleepwalking", "Clean Cut American Kid", "Cherokee Nation", and the infamous song about their hometown, "Oxnard". Ill Repute's set left many injured, sweaty, tired, but mostly excited and revamped for the rest of the night.

DOA at Gnarmageddon Fest 2011
D.O.A, probably the most anticipated acts of the night, came out to a full floor and high energy. Once the infamous Canadian group began performing, chaos erupted and a combative pit seemed to overwhelm the entire crowd and freak out security. Tons of Punks were crowd surfing to D.O.A's loved and signature hardcore Punk style and chanting along to their primarily political lyrics. Their set consisted of many favorites, including "2+2", "Police Brutality", "War", "Woke Up Screaming", and "Fuck You". Although many cheered and screamed for more D.O.A. ended their set; though this meant Gnarmageddon would soon be coming to an end, too many were too excited for Agent Orange to notice or care.
Agent Orange at Gnarmageddon Fest 2011 Pomona
The last band of the night was the biggest alumni for the Punk division of the event, and once it was time for Agent Orange to play, most of the hardcore kids had exited the venue, leaving the Glasshouse all to the punks for their enjoyment. Agent Orange offered Gnarmageddon some surf Punk for a change, and performed the most upbeat and melodic music of the day. The band performed their instrumental surf covers like "Pipeline" and "Miserlou," meanwhile fans danced and illustrated strange hippie-like moves in the pit.
Agent Orange Punk Band
Agent Orange at one point took the time to tell the audience about Randy "Macho Man" Savage, and then told the audience, "This next song goes out to Randy Savage who was... too young to die!" The audience cheered and Agent Orange proceeded to play "Too Young to Die." Among the band's usual songs from album "Living in Darkness," the band performed a cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love," though it was a Punk edition. Agent Orange performed their 45 minute set, and at the end of it, thanked fans and left the stage. Once the band finished, Gnarmageddon co-founder Jason Schwartz approached the stage, took the microphone, and began to thank the Glasshouse, supporters, and fans for their participation in Gnarmageddon. Scattered applause and cheers were returned, and Schwartz reiterated his gratitude before leaving the stage as well.

(Editor's note: This show is proof that no matter who you are or where you are, YOU too can put on a show like this. The only deciding factor if YOU will put on a show like this is if you are will to put in the hard work to make it happen. Everyone at Big Wheel Magazine would like to congratulate Jason Schwartz and Danny Lyerla for their hard work in putting on such a successful show -many people dream, WAY too many people talk and very few do, these two guys are do'ers.)

Bobot Adrenaline 10 Year Anniversary Show with Pussy Cow and Summer Vacation – at Blue Star – Los Angeles, CA

June 18, 2011

Bobot Adrenaline 10 Year Anniversary ShowLos Angeles can be the weirdest place on the planet most of the time as well as the most consistent at the same time. Perhaps what can be weird is that bands that kick ass will have a run for a few years and then go away. On the other hand there will be that favorite taco truck that will always be in the same place ready to feed you over the years and provide that stability your life needs.Thankfully Bobot Adrenaline has been a stable force on the Los Angeles music scene just like the favored taco truck and tonight they would be celebrating their 10 year anniversary! Their profile was raised many years ago when the Kiss of Kill club was happening and thankfully Bobot continued their charge and kept building a steady following everywhere they went.

Opening up the show was Pussy Cow, followed by Bobot Adrenaline and picking up the slack for Tilt Wheel who could not make it last minute was Summer Vacation. Here is a video below and photos so that you can get a recap of the night.

Hunx and His Punx – La Sera – Bleached at Nomad Gallery – Los Angeles, CA

June 18, 2011

Saturday was a goddamn party. I got picked up by some friends and drove to Elysian Valley in Los Angeles to see Hunx and his Punx play at the Nomad Gallery, a music venue/art gallery/lucha libre wrestling venue. It was both weird and awesome at the same time.
We got there and decided to walk down the street to pre-game it with some beers from the local liquor store. When we walked up to the store it was apparent that I was somewhere familiar. No it wasn't because it was surrounded by food and beer, but because I recognized the store from somewhere, but where? Of course! Won's Market, was none other than THE Won's Market from the incredible movie "Falling Down" starring Michael Douglass. A story of a man pushed to the edge of sanity in a world that seemingly is trying to keep him down...but I digress...We grabbed some drinks, and met up with some pedophiles in a van and indulged in our drinks. Good Times

Following some lively conversation about common interests, we headed inside to check out what was going on. As we walked in, we could see that this place really knew how to throw a show. The first things we spotted were a gigantic wrestling ring and a cart with a husband and wife duo selling $1 tacos.
Before the bands went on (and between bands as well) there were Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling matches going on with quite colorful characters. Most of the matches seemed to be jokes, but a few wrestlers put on a great show.

The first band, Bleached (ex-members of Mika Miko), went on and were a rad all-girl band

Fact: They are called bleached because one time the singer got pissed at her parents and poured bleach all over their clothes in their closet and drawers.

I did not watch the second band, La Sera, but from what I heard from some friends I was at the show with, they were quite the dish - another female fronted band with sweet catchy tunes. Bummer that I was too busy smoking cigarettes and talking to people. What a douche.

Finally the time had come for Hunx and His Punx to play. They were awesome, plain and simple. All members of the band were decked out in S&M like caps and moustaches. Confetti was thrown, people were peed on, dicks were shown - the night was a success.

Not enough description for you? Too bad, should have gone to the show loser!
