Green Day and AFI Preview – at The Verizon Amphitheatre – Aug 31, 2010

July 25, 2010

Green DayThere aren’t many bands that have been capable of maintaining such a loyal underground fan base over the years, yet reach a mass of new fans with each release they put out. Two bands that have been able to do just that are touring together on one of the hottest North American package tours this summer.

Here’s a hint; both bands hail from the East Bay of Northern California. If you guessed both Green Day and A.F.I. you’ve done your homework!

Green Day Albums
Since Green Day’s rise to fame in the mid 90’s with the chart smashing album “Dookie” they’ve been one of the hottest live acts on the road. With 4 Grammy Wins, 8 full length album releases and over 65 Million records sold world wide they are easily recognized as the most successful punk band from The USA. Thankfully fame and fortune have not watered down Green Days creativity or live show one bit, 16 years after “Dookie” (15 million copies sold) they still put on a high energy show packed with the hits; Welcome To Paradise, When I Come Around, Brain Stew, Minority, American Idiot, and of course cult fan favorites from their first two releases.
Green Day
A.F.I. (short for A Fire Inside) much like Green Day rose to fame through radio air play and MTV exposure and managed to keep a huge chunk of their rabid cult fan base. Their live set is made up of mostly newer tracks from their last 3 releases, so don’t expect to hear too many songs that will cause a huge circle pit to erupt, instead prepare to be rocked in a melodic melancholy morose manner.

The 21st Century Breakdown Tour will definitely be a hot ticket and the most happening place to be on a Tuesday night when it swings through Irvine this upcoming August. Two huge bands at one huge venue for a decent price sounds like a score and a show worth while, especially if you’d plan to see both bands separately. Do yourself a favor and get rocked twice in one night to Green Day & AFI, you’ll be glad you did.

Punk Rock Academy Fight Song – They have come for your uncool niece

July 25, 2010

Arrgh, This one hurts. There goes my street cred. Call the scene police. Forgive me Jello for I have Sinned.  As much as this column is a portal into the things that made me a punk it is also as you may have picked up on by now a confessional of some decidedly un-Punk moments but those are really the important ones aren’t they? So what is my big transgression this time? I sang out loud to a Journey song-in a bar. And damn it I will do it again. And so would a lot of you out there and guess what there’s nothing wrong with that.

The incident in question took place a few years ago at one of my favorite haunts, Alex’s Bar in Long Beach. Now Alex’s is a dyed in wool Punk rock dive with a portrait of Johnny Cash hanging over the bar and dia de los muertos artwork scattered throughout. This makes my alleged crime akin to wearing a Giants cap to Dodger stadium or maybe drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa or ordering a Michelob Ultra- you just don’t do it. So any way it was a sweltering summer night and my buddy Mike A. and I had decided to go over to Alex’s for a pint or three and talk music, we were in band together(but that’s another column-see that’s called foreshadowing folks) and generally just be slacker degenerates. So a couple of drinks into the evening it happened. The jukebox started up and the familiar sounds of Don’t Stop Believin’ started pulsing out of the speaker. We had no choice we had to do it, maybe it was the booze or maybe just maybe we really liked that infernal tune. That’s right we stood up and started belting out the chorus at the top of our lungs and we didn’t care who was looking at us and what they were thinking. Because in the midst of our revelry two girls at the table next to us started snickering at us in their attempt to shame us and brand us as less than cool, objects of scorn and ridicule for the musical elite that we had betrayed by our outrageous display. How dare we taint the sanctity of this establishment with our unabashed enjoyment of Journey. The only possible course of action was to leave as quickly as possible and never show our faces there again, right? Wrong. Instead I took a long pull of my beer gently set it down on our table, walked over to our mockers and proceeded to inform them that A. the song was in the jukebox so obviously a lot of other people including the owner probably liked that song B. Somebody else in the bar had to have requested it and C. get over yourself and admit that you like the damn song and just have a good time. Maybe they were too shocked or maybe they knew that I was right and they were the ones who had indeed sent the their hard earned dollar on that selection but my tormentors were left speechless and I triumphantly  returned to my table and sank into my chair and enjoyed the refreshing taste of victory and the rest of my beer.

Sometimes in our pursuit of coolness, in our rush to go against normal conventions we get a bit full of ourselves and don’t allow ourselves to admit we like certain types of music because they might lower our hip quotient or put a dent in our status as anti-establishment crusaders. I myself am as guilty as anybody of often being a music snob and many a time have I publicly and quite mercilessly assailed peoples choices in song. Because really there is a lot of crap out there and certain things just deserve to be reviled-Im looking at you Michael Bolton, Limp Bizkit. But by the same token there are somethings that are just meant to be enjoyed because they are good songs that make us feel good and I don't mean in some ironic hipster oohh look at my sweet members only jacket kind of way. I mean liking something because you have always like it and everyone else be damned. Now it could have something to do with the popularity of Glee that it is safe to listen to Journey and crank out Don’t Stop Believin’ without fear of reprisal and embarrassment. It’s not bad or cheesy if its on a hit TV show right? But for me that song just takes me back to being a kid pure and simple-there is no irony or even bandwagon jumping attached to it. I’m thirty five and a married father of two I’m not afraid of the cool police anymore. Oh and one more thing that’s right I watch Glee- a show about a bunch of freaks and outcasts who use music to get over on the cool kids, hmm why does that sound so familiar?

Buy Luvox No Prescription

July 23, 2010

Old Man Markley show preview Buy Luvox no prescription, "When You Awake" is an Indie Folk, Classic Country and Roots Music Blog that supports the Indie music scene and the people involved. They have organized the "Free For All Festival" at The Echoplex in Los Angeles. Not only is there an amazing line-up of talented musicians such as Old Man Markley, Frank Fairfield, Chicago, Illinois. Houston, Texas, Langhorne Slim, The Smart Brothers, Buy Luvox no prescription, and many more, but the concept behind this festival is very interesting as well. This music festival was started by avid music lovers who felt that the live music scene needs a serious restructuring and feel that it's wrong, that the profits from the "service fees" attached to ticket sales are never passed along to the bands who pack the venues, köpa Luvox online, Osta Luvox online, Jotta Luvox verkossa. With that in mind, they are attempting a "pay what you want, Where can i find Luvox online, ticketless music and art experience". Their hope is that this type of exchange will bring together the bands and their fans with as little money being lost between the two as possible, buy Luvox no prescription. It will be a day of art, music, and culture, purchase Luvox online no prescription. If you love great music and want to support independent artists, come on down to The Echoplex on Sunday and join in the fun. Buy cheap Luvox no rx, We had a chance to catch up and chat with Johnny and Joey from Old Man Markley recently to learn a little bit about their band and their musical roots and this is what they had to say...

Old Man Markley is:

Alex Z: Mandolin

Annie: Autoharp, cowbell, train whistle & kazoo

Blake: Drums, knock knock jokes

Joey: Bass, order Luvox from mexican pharmacy, vocals

John: Banjo

Johnny: Vocals, guitar

Katie: Fiddle

Ryan: Washboard

Todd: Harmonica

How did all of you meet and decide to form Old Man Markley?

Joey: We all live in the San Fernando Valley, and most of us grew up here. We’ve all played music with each other over the years, buy Luvox without a prescription, you could easily do a family tree thing and see how incestuous our musical relationships have been, but basically we are friends who play music together. Buy Luvox no prescription, Old Man Markley, a nickname given to Ryan (washboard/growls) is the musical love child conceived one drunken night.

Johnny: It was Ryan's 25th birthday three years ago this August and the first night we jammed with washboard, banjo, mandolin and acoustic guitar. Luvox price, We’ve had several members since come and go, but this line-up has been constant since last September.

Give us a sense of the music backgrounds of each of the members, brag on your people a bit.

Joey: Johnny, Kjøpe Luvox online, bestill Luvox online, Blake (drums) and I had a Punk band in high school. We jammed with Tom Petty’s guitar player Mike Campbell at a New Years Eve party. John Rosen (banjo) was winning banjo competitions when he was a teenager, dude rips, Baltimore, Maryland. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Katie Weed (fiddle) has a master’s degree in screen writing but has never seen Goonies, buy Luvox no prescription. Her parents Joe and Marty Weed are both accomplished professional musicians and make really good breakfast. Watching Katie and Joe perform fiddle duets makes me want to cry it’s so good. Detroit, Michigan, San Jose, California, Ryan (washboard) and Alex Z (mandolin) provided the rhythm section for Angel City Outcasts from 2000-2007. Even though they had left the band, they attended the Playboy Mansion as honorary ACO members in 2008. Buy Luvox no prescription, Ask Ryan if you get the chance, it’s a great story. Todd Fenton (harmonica) provides a lot of the lyrics in our songs and makes really good salsa from scratch.

Annie De Temple (autoharp/vocals) is the-in-demand nose flute player of the San Fernando Valley, where can i buy cheapest Luvox online. Her dad, Mike De Temple owns De Temple Guitars, Luvox snort, alcohol iteraction, a custom guitar building company where Johnny and Ryan work, so she grew up with music all around her. She is also on a first name basis with Gary Busey.

Johnny: Joey and I have played together consistently for about as long as I can remember, our previous band Blue Collar Special had about a ten year run, Luvox samples, In fact it was our band-mate Rafe Mordente who founded Big Wheel publishing a few years back, just a little Big Wheel trivia for you folks. Boston, Massachusetts. Charlotte, Carolina, For Several years now Joey and I have been playing in one of our favorite punk bands, Youth Brigade. I consider us very lucky to have been giving the opportunity to play with some our childhood heroes, its still crazy when I stop and think about it..

I know that you have strong ties to Punk rock, buy Luvox no prescription. There are a lot of "Punk Rock" musicians that are playing folk, acoustic, Luvox coupon, and bluegrass music. I'm sure all have different reasons. El Paso, Texas. Washington, D.C. Seattle, Washington, What inspired you to play bluegrass music and how do you see the parallel between the two genres?

Johnny: I was inspired by the instrumentation and musicianship in folk and bluegrass. I thought it would open us up to lots of possibilities in our writing and stage show.

Buy Luvox no prescription, Joey: I guess you could say that both Punk and bluegrass typically played at a fast pace, or that both genres tend to speak to the working/middle class, or that many punk rock musicians/fans are growing up and moving toward a different sound.

You played at Punk Rock Bowling in May, how do you feel that your style of music appeals to the Punk community?

Johnny: I always felt right from the start we were a punk band. Luvox for sale, For us it all comes down to our state of mind. We love to play. I think that’s what is appealing to the Punk community, appealing to everyone for that matter.

Old Man Markley photo

The live performance Old Man Markley puts on is like Hee Haw meets the Circle Jerks it seems, Online buying Luvox, what is it that you feel seems to break people down to the point that they now want to get caught up in the fun of the live show?

Johnny: What seems to break people down is our energy we bring at our live shows, its infectious.

Joey: We are anti-pretension. We really have fun playing shows and I think it transcends to the crowd easily, buy Luvox no prescription. I always dare the crowd to have more fun than us.

What are some of your strongest musical influences?

Johnny: The Beatles, NOFX, Fort Worth, Texas. Denver, Colorado, Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs, The Descendents, Bill Monroe, australia, uk, us, usa, Buena Vista Social club…wow..thats a weird list so far…too many to list I guess..

You will be performing at When You Awake's "Free for all Music Festival". Can you tell me a little more about the "When You Awake" organization, and what do you think about the concept of this festival?

Johnny: “When You Awake” is an Indie Folk, Classic Country and Roots Music Blog that supports independent music and arts, buy Luvox without prescription.

Joey: I’m into anything that promotes music, I used to edit Big Wheel magazine when it was a print magazine and I have an appreciation for forums where shows are promoted and music is shared and discussed. Acheter en ligne Luvox, acheter Luvox bon marché, I think the festival is going to be a great extension of what “When You Awake” does online.

Old Man Markley photo

In your opinion, what is the most important reason to play music?

Johnny: Music is one of the most powerful things I have ever known, I'm not sure why I play, but I know its part of me. I think the most important thing to remember is if you’re not having fun it is not worth doing.

Does the band have any plans to tour?

Johnny: Yes, we are booking some northwest dates in the next few months and then planning a full U.S. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Las Vegas, Nevada, tour in 2011 in support of the record.

Will you be recording any new material anytime soon?

Johnny:  we have lots of new ideas and are currently demoing them in our home studio

What are some of your goals for the next few years, and how do you see the band progressing?

Johnny: Our goal now is to write and release a second record in the next year, 1000mg, 2000mg, maybe try out a few more members... ha ha, always wanted a saw player..

Billy Idol Preview – at The Hollywood Palladium Aug 14, 2010

July 22, 2010

IdolBack in merry ol England in the mid to late 1970's there were few bands creating their own brand of rock n roll that would come to be known as Punk Rock. "Generation X" fronted by a young vocalist named Billy Idol were among the first and finest of the genre.

Generation X would go on to release 2 LP's by 1979 and another in 1981. Without a steady lineup they would soon disband only to kick start Billy's career as a solo performer under the stage name of Billy Idol. The 1980's were a very good time for Billy, his first full length record would go on to spawn 3 very successful singles ; "Hot In The City", "Dancing With Myself" and his biggest hit to date "White Wedding", making him a chart topping pop culture icon and his music videos a staple on MTV. He'd also make the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wearing nothing but leather underwear, catholic rosaries and a bondage belt.

His second full length "Rebel Yell" would bring him to new heights with 4 singles, the most popular of them being "Rebel Yell" and the ballad "Eyes Without A Face". Billy's Punk Rock attitude and image mixed with the sensibilities of Pop made him the first of the Punk Rock class of 1977 to crossover into being a household name in America and all over the world (Just see the 1998' film The Wedding Singer). Peroxide bleached hair, leather galore and a whiplash smile are some of his features that he still is known for to this day. His live show is one that after 34 years still hits with full force from start to finish.

Expect to hear a few new songs, the ever popular cover "Mony Mony" and of course the number 1 hit that put Billy Idol and guitarist Steve Stevens on the map for all time. Billy Idol is a living legend in the flesh and bone bringing you the best of 70's UK Punk and 80's New Wave all rolled into one hell of a Rock N' Roll show. Every summer there are shows you want to go to, and shows you MUST go to, Billy Idol at the Hollywood Palladium falls into the MUST category. This is a show not to miss.
