Xmas with X – at The Fonda Theatre – Los Angeles, CA

December 21, 2012

Xmas with X - at The Fonda Theatre - Los Angeles, CA - December 21, 2012A time long ago it was predicted by the ancient Mayans that the world would come to an end on December 21st in the year 2012. Thankfully the Mayans were dead wrong and because of their miscalculated doomsday predictions the planned Xmas with X concert scheduled for Friday the 21st was able to go down without any catastrophic incidents.

As you will see in the video footage put together by your friends here at Big Wheel Magazine, X were in top form (as always) and ready to celebrate the holiday season with their classic brand of LA flavored Punk rock and roll. Opening with the popular staple Your Phone’s Off The Hook, But You’re Not, the crowd were more than ready to get things moving along on the dance floor to the upbeat tunes filling up the large theatre.

From way up on the balcony to down below in the pit, there wasn’t a person not bouncing around to the fast rhythms provided by bassist John Doe and drummer DJ Bonebreak, as they are amongst the finest rhythm section around. Guitarist Billy Zoom riffed through each song with a precision that could only come with years of performing while Exene worked the stage and sang as soulful as she has in years.

Seeing how the world didn’t fall apart Friday, Exene made it known that X was happy to play a hometown show on Hollywood Blvd on such a monumental night. Taking it a step farther than just speaking to a dark crowd, the front woman had the lighting engineer illuminate the venue so the band could take a look at the crowd that had gathered to spend their evening with X. With over 1000 heads in the room it was a full capacity hometown holiday Punk rock show, a crowd that only X and a few others could bring together this time of year.

The nearly 2 hour long concert had everything a fan could want, all the classics, all the hits, all the between song stage banter and all the energy fans have come to expect from such a legendary band.

With the world not ending like it was once predicted, X seemed to be the perfect band to spend the pre Xmas evening with and where better than the Fonda? We already can’t wait till next year’s holiday concert with our favorite all original LA Punk band.

  Editor's note:
I'm not going to sit here and give a play by play review of X, because its been done and they are always amazing, and let's be honest, if you need to sit here and read about how legendary this band and how great all of their songs are, then maybe you just don't get it. I will say that it was cool that prior to playing "New World" Exene took a minute in the middle of the set to bring up the house lights to speak sincerely about how all this 2012 bullshit should be looked upon as a new beginning, and a chance for us start treating each other with respect and dignity. With any luck people will take that to heart and not only express selective kindness and tolerance for their own kind...Oh, I know I said i wasn't going to do a play by play, but they also played "Nausea" which I feel is important to mention because its a rad song and I want to and furthermore you cant do jack about it.
