The Creepshow – at The Knitting Factory – Hollywood, CA

March 1, 2009

When I hear about shows, I tend to jot them down on my calendar and as the date gets closer, I decide if I'm going to the show, or not. Sometimes its a late decision, sometimes its decided in advance and this was one of those early decisions!! I found out that The Creepshow was playing in Los Angeles about 2 months before the show and circled that date in my calendar as a "must see".

You see The Creepshow does a lot of touring, but hailing from the East Coast of Canada, they do not get the chance to play the West Coast very often, so I was extremely excited to see them for the first time after their 2nd full length CD release. I was a little disappointed that they only played one LA show. I kept expecting another show to pop up, but it never did, so I had to make sure I was at this show because, no way in hell, I was going to miss them!!

The show was at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood. If you are not familiar with this club, they have 2 clubs attached to each other, with two different shows usually going on at the same time (which was the case this night). When I got to the show, I walked in and thought for sure that I had stumbled into the wrong club. I looked at the stage and the singer with long, long hair and tight leather pants, was headbanging to some metal music. I thought to myself, "Wow, I'm definitely in the wrong place". I almost turned around and headed out the door, but then I saw Creepshow singer (Sarah) standing by their vendor booth. I had to do a double take to make sure I was in the right place (I had a definite twilight zone moment). Don't get me wrong, the band was rocking and sounded real tight, but I just didn't expect  this style of music playing at a Creepshow event. I expected other Psychobilly bands, or perhaps punk bands, to open up for them. Anyways, I found out that the band was named Demonia. They looked to have a pretty good dedicated following of fans. I only saw the last couple of songs. I guess they were put on the bill because of the Rue Morgue Horror association with Creepshow, which I fully understand, it just threw me for a loop at first. Like I said, I only saw the last couple of songs, so it would not be fair of me to review it, but they seemed to do a good job of opening for the Creepshow. Maybe I'll catch up to them later on.

So up next was the band that everybody was waiting for, Creepshow!! After visiting the bar for a few "relaxing" drinks, I decided to head for the stage before it got too crowded. I managed to sneak towards the front to try and grab a few cool photos of the band. And with a few drinks in one hand, and a camera in the other hand, I was ready for action!! As a big fan of the band, I was ecstatic to finally get to see them live, and as they hit the stage, with fiery fury, you can tell that they were determined to rock LA hard!! They played all their classic tunes from both releases (Zombies Ate Her Brain, Rue Morgue Radio, Take My Hand, etc....) and mixed it all in very well. Sickboy (their stand up bassist) was amazing!! It was probably from the extensive touring that they do, but the band sounded very experienced and had the whole live show flow nailed down!!  I thought since Sarah Sin (vocalist and guitarist) is the only guitarist in the band, that they would add another guitarist to their live set, so that she could focus more on singing, but no, she had complete control and worked that guitar while not missing a sinlgle beat on vocals. Truly amazing job!! That is where the experience really shined through!! It was one of those shows that I wished didn't have to end. After a few on-chore songs, they ended their set leaving the LA crowd satisfied and hungry for the next time they come to town.

I hope they set up more than one LA show next time so more people get the chance to see them perform. Oh for anybody that missed them this time around, they will be back in LA for the Ink and Iron festival on June 7th in Long Beach, so get yer tix early and go support this band, they are more than worth the price of admission!! And for any European readers, they will be starting a tour in April, so catch them, if you get the chance. For a full schedule of shows, hit up their MySpace page. Also pick up their new CD, you will NOT be sorry!!
