Musink 2013 – Pennywise – Lagwagon – TSOL – and COR – at The Orange County Fairgrounds – Costa Mesa, CA

March 9, 2013

Musink 2013 - Pennywise - Lagwagon - TSOL - and COR - at The Orange County Fairgrounds - Costa Mesa, CAA different day brought a different crowd to Musink 2013. Day two began with a rush of fans who seemed equally transfixed with musical showcase scheduled for later in the day, as well as the various forms of art exhibited at festival.

One artist amongst the masses at Musink 2013 was Sean Dietrich who when asked how long he had been interested in art replied back with a simple “since I was 4 years old.” According to Dietrich he had been doing live art at festivals and conventions for the past 13 years, and has been supporting himself through his art for the past 6 years. Dietrich described his art as more of a comic book style that tends to gravitate towards what he called a “world war two graphic pin-up model style.” His reasoning being that he preferred to explore his stylized female art forms as being more clothed warriors as opposed to the standard less clothed pin-up models. Sean Dietrichs art can be seen on his website industriacide.com.

What would day two of Musink 2013 be without tattoos? During the tattoo contest, held in the aircraft style hanger that would later in the day house some amazing Punk musical acts, Chris Garcia spoke with Big Wheel Magazine about his participation in the event. Garcia represented the shop Rise Above Tattoo co. based out of Montclair, CA. Garcia who is an apprentice at Rise Above Tattoo co. entered in a tattoo of “Kickass” based off of the characters style seen in the movie. Garcia, who seemed more excited about being part of the tattoo contest, when asked if he was nervous about the competition responded with “I am just thankful to be a part of the event, and I’m excited to see Pennywise later today.”

Musink 2013 day two was a day for Punk music fans to gather and celebrate the reunion of family man Punk group Pennywise, the always tastefully offensive Lagwagon, Punk’s legendary hardcore survivors T.S.O.L. and relatively new artist COR.

COR was the opening band for the day, and with little introduction the band quickly delved into their rock style, with technical guitar mastery only found in bands who have been perfecting their craft for decades. The band took time mid-set to thank those in attendance for being part of their show, and for supporting the tattoo scene. As soon as COR finished warming up the crowd, bringing the anticipation in the air to a tantalizing high, all that could be heard was the whispers of how awesome the rest of the show was sure to be.

As the time for T.S.O.L. to take the stage grew closer longtime fans of the band Tom Pee and Ted Tapia shared their positive expectations about the T.S.O.L.  that would begin soon. The show kicked off as Jack Grisham stepped onto stage and exclaimed he was excited to be among tattooed fans like those in attendance during day two of the festival.

The T.S.O.L. musical set did however experience a bit of a hiccup. Mid-way through their set a group of overly rowdy fans engaged in a brawl that left a few fans injured. What is positive to note about the fight is how Grisham handled the affair. According to Ted Tapia “Jack didn’t encourage [the fight] and told off a camera man taking pictures of the fight; instead stopping the show momentarily so not to be a back drop to the brawl.” T.S.O.L. finished strong opting to play “Code Blue,” providing a fitting ambiance for band to follow.

Lagwagon was next, and after introducing his band to the audience Joey Cape took a moment to express his feelings about the show. Cape exclaimed how he felt honored to share the stage with T.S.O.L. a band that he stated “[I] grew up listening to them,” all while the audience remained respectfully silent as if to hang onto every one of Cape’s words.

The rest of Lagwagon’s set to follow consisted of their signature style playing tracks that included “Mr. Coffee,” “Sleep,” “Mute,” and finished their set with a cover of “Ace of Spades.” Lagwagon exited the stage to a round of clapping and cheers. Leaving the crowd excited for the new selection of Miss Musink/New Sullen Angel.

Several contestants, all with the hope of becoming the next Miss Musink, took stage next. Cheers and jeers alike from the audience followed. The various competitors took stage, all proudly displayed their tattoos, and some engaged in an impromptu talent show. Some contesting sang for the audience, one contestant rapped a few freestyle lyrics. However only one contestant was chosen to be the next Miss Musink as well as newest Sullen Angel, and Danielle Ashlee was the one chosen.

After the contest Pennywise took the stage. They played quite a few of their older classics, like “Fuck Authority,” and “Perfect People.” There was even a point in the burr of music that the band got a chance to play “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie” by Black Flag, and “Fight for Your Right” by the Beastie Boys. A couple of key point during their show occurred at first when a man in the crowd handed Jim Linberg a three legged Chihuahua, exclaimed to the crowd that the dog wanted to hear their track “Society,” and the last important point of note happened when Jim took time in the middle of the set to talk about fxckcanger.org and bring up one afflicted by the stage to applaud her courage.

As mentioned in the article about day one Musink 2013, the organization is responsible for funding cancer research and making the lives of those afflicted by the disease a little bit better. Pennywise finished off their show with a rendition of their crowd favorite “Bro’ Hymn” by bringing up as many fans that could fit on stage to sing their song with them. Once Pennywise left stage day two of Musink 2013 came to a close leaving those attending day three of Musink to wait in anticipation for what fun it would hold.
