Larry and His Flask – at The Moorings Bar – Aberdeen, UK

May 26, 2012

I took a chance to go and see this band, I knew nothing about them but they had my senses tingling, just something in my head said go and see them. This was their first show in Scotland and hopefully the first of  many.

Larry and His Flask come from Oregon. They have a southern roots and bluegrass sound mixed with a horn section for that Ska feeling with a bit of Celtic punk mixed in. They went straight up and at em right from the start and all through the show. Banjo, mandolin, guitars and drums (drummer Jamin stands while playing drums for entire show) all instruments were given a serious workout.

We got a selection of songs from a couple of albums including “Closed Doors”, “Flags”, “Manifest” and more.

Singer Ian Cook took his guitar for a wander in the crowd every now and then, whilst  Dallin on guitar played it like a man possessed, wildly shaking his head and screaming his head off. Jamin stood on the drums pointing his drum sticks at the crowd.

In the second last song has the band said “let’s look handsome” and they took off their shirts! All except double bass player Jesse who decided to strip down to his boxers and invited the crowd to do the same. Some girls actually did and were standing with just their bras on! A bra was thrown on to the stage which landed on the mic. The band all laughed and said that in all the years they’ve tried that this was the first time that’s happened. Kirk the mandolin player ended up sitting on the stage with the bra on his head.

“Slow it Down” three of the band went into the audience and got the crowd to sit down with them as they played a mellow part. After a bit they returned to the stage and told everyone to stay there, until a count to 4 when they got everyone up dancing like mad people with some wild dancing.

For the last song one cymbal was put in the crowd. Jamin Marshall jumped off the stage and hit it then, playing it while off the stage and finished the set there.
