Gold Diggers – Death Hymn Number 9 – Forever Baby – at Five Stats Bar – Los Angeles, CA

May 13, 2011

Forever BabyFriday the 13...bad luck...evilness...hogwash. The scariest thing I saw that night was a tranny from the local tranny bar. Meanwhile inside the bar some really cool bands played a show at downtown Los Angeles' Five Stars Bar. This place always tends to have a cool mix of bands and djs, which is cool, since it doesn't peg itself as being a particular type of bar. The first band to play was Forever Baby, who recently hired the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" banana, who has recently fallen on hard times. The songs they play are a mix of afro-fusion music coupled with Macarena style dance moves. These guys have been around for a little under a year now, but this was the first time that I was able to see them. Too bad they don't have any videos or music out or else id link you to it. Maybe on xtube?

Death Hymn Number 9 was the next band up. There's something really cool about this band, I'm not sure if it's the music, or the fact that they are zombies who rise from the dead just to musically entertain us, but whatever the case, this band is rad. The guitarist obviously lost the ability to stand while digging out of a shallow grave at some point, because he plays sitting down for the entire set, which really must be a lot more comfortable than standing the whole time. In addition to the guitarist with a bum leg, the drummer either has a misguided sense of direction or just can't take his eyes off the guitar player, because the drum set is set up to face the seated ghoul rather than the audience. A really good band considering the stench of rotting flesh.

Death Hymn has just released an album of their songs titled "Smoke Stack Frightening" on Bennett Records, where it can be purchased, or at any of their live shows.

The Last band that I saw, was Gold Diggers. I've got to be honest, it was getting late and I was getting up early in the morning, so i bailed about 2 songs into their set, but from what I did hear, they were a pretty cool band. Hope to catch them again so I can give them a fair listen.

Sorry other bands who played later that night. Nothing personal but I had to be up at 4:30am the next morning. Maybe next time around.
