Darkwater – at Tunnels – Aberdeen, UK

April 5, 2009

Darkwater have been quiet for the last year or so with most of that time being taken up with writing their new album. Having not seen them play for what must be around 2 years I was very excited to see what new tricks they'd come up with.

The biggest difference was that they played minus a drummer. At first I expect this to make a big change to their sound but to be honest you didn't notice as you got into the energy of it. They started with their known cover of ‘Rebel Yeah’ which got the crowd listening. They then belted out mostly new songs which were as good if not better than their previous tunes. ‘Money’ involved shouting “Give me your f***ing money” over and over which went down really well with onlookers. A few even felt the need to give their money to the band who were obviously rather happy and amused about that!

Darkwater’s sound is very rocky and dark but with the energy from all members of the band and the lively vocals of front(wo)man Lora they keep everyone interested and upbeat. They play well together especially with G and Doog’s riffs slamming about the venue. Law keeps everything together on the synths, still managing a bit of moshing from behind the keyboard.

They ended on a lively cover of the Cult song ‘Sanctuary’ which seemed to leave punters wanting more. Although most stood their ground around the sides for the show, they definitely enjoyed it and were clapping and cheering all the way through. Finishing to many whoops and cheers Darkwater bounded off the stage obviously exhausted but happy for playing a good gig after so long off.

There is no release date as yet for their new album but do keep an eye out for it. I can't wait until they get their own tour, they are definitely a band to look out for.
