Aberdeen Hogmanay Street Party with Amy Macdonald and Sandi Thom – Aberdeen, UK

January 1, 2009

Aberdeen's Winter Festival Hogmanay (pronounced hog-man-ay] — with the main stress on the last syllable) is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the  new year  in the Scottish manner. It is, however, normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of New Years day (1st January) or, in some cases, 2nd January. Gates opened at 8.00pm, bands on stage from 9.00pm, event finished approx. 12.30am.

Entry to the event was free on a first come first served basis via gates at the junction of Union Street and Market Street. A wristband was issued on entry and you were requested to return it on exit to allow maximum attendance. Barriers were erected around the event arena, and numbers admitted were monitored to ensure crowd safety at all times. At it’s peak there was about 20,000 people there.

Scottish singing and song-writing sensations Amy Macdonald and Sandi Thom will lead a wonderful night of live music and entertainment from the Castlegate stage. The line up is the perfect way to start the year of Homecoming Scotland 2009 celebrating the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth with a year long program of events across the country showcasing Scotland's rich culture and heritage.

First up was Sandi Thom  as a Scottish singer/song writer. She first became famous after being controversially promoted as an unknown webcasting gigs from her basement flat in Tooting. Chart-topper Sandi Thom was due to play two gigs in one night 1st in Aberdeen, then straight after jetted to Edinburgh to play again.… The crowd love Punk Rocker and Sandi's cover of Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars.

Then it was Amy Macdonald a Scottish singer/song writer. Her debut album this the life was released on 30 July 2007 and has now sold over 2 million copies world-wide. Her first single, 'Poison Prince," was released on 7 May 2007. She has played shows at music festivals such as Glastonbury,  and V festival. She played till just before twelve, then there was a countdown till the new year and all the crowd went wild, hugging and kissing.

There is some housing around the street party where people can watch the event from the comfort of there own home and dance in front on there windows which was highly entertaining.
