Your Parents’ Hardcore – 7 Seconds play a rare So Cal Show with Circle Jerks at FOX Theater May 1, 2010

April 13, 2010

7 SecondsA few years back a band called What Happens Next? recorded an epic tune called "Positive Youth: It's Not Just for Kids Anymore" and one can only think that they had 7 Seconds on their minds when they wrote it. Having been playing on and off since 1979, 7 Seconds are part of the binding fabric that holds together the legacy of American Hardcore Punk, spanning across several generations. Seeing 7 Seconds has been a rite of passage for Hardcore kids since the 1980's, which inspired the band to write a song on their most recent album called "(This Is) Your Parents' Hardcore." Now with the band making a rare appearance in Southern California fellow veterans, the Circle Jerks, and new generation Hardcore bands, Ceremony and Municipal Waste, 7 Secs will be helping to reinforce their stature as an inter-generational Hardcore band.

After recording a series of demo tapes early on in their career, 7 Seconds released several records in the 1980's that flirted with perfection, from early E.P.'s like "Skins, Brains, and Guts" and "Committed For Life" to their two definitive full length albums, "The Crew" and "Walk Together, Rock Together." The band's foundation is built from inspirations from the catchy singalong melodies of Sham 69 and the Angelic Upstarts and they were energized by the emerging Hardcore sounds from bands like Minor Threat, Black Flag, and S.O.A.. Their songs are anthemic blasts of power accompanied by lyrics that are always positive but never overly preachy. It's this recipe that has attracted Punks, Skinheads, Skate rats, and Straight Edge kids to rock together to songs like "Young Til I Die," "Diehard Youth," "Clenched Fists, Black Eyes," "Regress No Way" and "We're Gonna Fight."

After experimenting with different forms of music, the band returned to form in the 1990's with their "Good To Go" album. Within the past decade they released "Take It Back, Take It On, Take It Over!," which was a call to arms and a reminder that the guys were still kicking around, helping to keep Hardcore pure and positive.

Though 7 Seconds aren't showing any signs of giving up anytime soon, their tours in the past fifteen years or so have been few and far between and any chance to check out such a legendary act shouldn't be missed. Although they have relocated from to Sacramento they seem to seldom make it down here to the L.A. area and to see them play with both the Circle Jerks and Ceremony is probably a once in a lifetime chance.
