The Slackers Preview: at The Key Club – Hollywood, CA – January 8, 2011

Although New Years is traditionally celebrated on the first of the year, the Slackers are commemorating 2011 in Hollywood on January 8th. The Key Club will be hosting Finding Rudy and the Bullets as support for the Ska group, making this one of the most highly anticipated shows this month for Rude kids.

The Bullets are most famously known for Aggrolites' organist Roger Riva's side project, but they have proved to be much more than that. Their album, "Sweet Misery", was nominated for best Ska Rocksteady Early Reggae album of 2010 alongside big names in the Ska scene such as Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, and the Moon Invaders. Like the Slackers, the Bullets possess a Reggae and Soul style that remind listeners of "the latest Panama Reggae hit to sweep London town".

One of the most significant groups to emerge from the New York Ska scene in the 90's, the Slackers "are a classic American band that is equal parts grit and grace". The band's  Jamaican reggae and Ska style comes from many influences, such as the Skatalites and the Upsetters. Although they derive influence from these groups the Slackers have also held on to their unique sound and lyrics; Throughout the years the group has experimented with different elements such as rocksteady, dub, soul, and blues. The Slackers have managed to release twelve studio albums since 1996, along with touring extensively every year and selling out countless venues in their short, but impressive, career.

Trying to perfectly describe the Slackers proves to be a difficult task, as they have had a wide variety of influences, styles, and different components that make up their music. That being said, pick up an album if you haven't heard them already and head down to Hollywood to bask in their distinguished and superb melodies. Even though they tour often, you won't want to miss this impressive Ska line-up to kick off your new year.
