Psychedelic Furs Preview – at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on June 24, 2010 and The Grove in Anaheim, CA on June 25, 2010

June 13, 2010

Psychedelic FursWhile many people mistakenly lump the Psychedelic Furs in with much of the mindless New Wave pop of the 1980's this reflects a gross misunderstanding of one of the era's greatest bands. It is certainly true that the Psychedelic Furs will always be best known for penning the song "Pretty In Pink" and it's association with the John Hughes film of the same title, which helps to create a pedestrian image of the band as a "Best Of the 80's" greatest hits novelty band, but look even slightly deeper to the band's other, big hit "Love My Way" and one will find a level of substance and intensity that outshines any of the band's mainstream contemporaries.
Psychedelic Furs
The band formed in 1977 being swept up by the excitement of the burgeoning British Punk scene. However it wasn't until 1980 when the band released their debut self titled album and by then they had established a sound that easily stands next to the early material of bands like Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen. The songs carried catchy pop hooks but were delivered with a raw attitude that reflected the Furs' roots in the Punk scene. "We Love You" in particular carried a cynical and sarcastic critique of modern British culture. While the band's later material had more of a commercial appeal, the Psychedelic Furs never lost their edge and "Forever Now" which carried "Love My Way" as its hit single, also had songs like "President Gas" that addressed social issues of economic despair and political corruption, as well as the title track "Forever Now" which is one of the most romantic songs to come out of the Post Punk phenomenon.

The band managed to survive through the 1980's and part of the 1990's before finally splitting after their "World Outside" album. While they have not produced any new original material since then, fans have been lucky enough to get a chance to see the Psychedelic Furs again since they reunited in 2000. Here in Southern California we are blessed to have them play semi regularly, but to use this as an excuse to miss them would be a mistake. They will be playing on the nights of June 24 and June 25 at the Wiltern in Los Angeles and the Grove of Anaheim. Both promise to be nights to remember.
