Power Of The Riff Festival w/ Corrosion Of Conformity Preview – at The EchoPlex – Los Angeles, CA – August 8, 2010 – FREE

July 17, 2010

The Power of The Riff Corrosion of ConformityBy the time that Corrosion of Conformity released their "Animosity" album in 1985 they had already established a name for themselves in the Hardcore Punk scene with their "Eye For An Eye" record that had been released a year earlier. However while "Eye For An Eye" was a solid debut for a Hardcore band it ultimately was fairly unremarkable. It was "Animosity" that would become known as C.O.C.’s definitive album and one of a hand full of records that would help create the foundation for the Crossover scene.

The major shifts in C.O.C.’s musical direction came when "Eye For An Eye" vocalist Eric Eycke left the band and their bassist, Mike Dean took on vocal duties. Dean’s unique vocals helped set the band apart from their peers along with the addition of Metal influences into the music. "Animosity" is an absolutely pivotal record- it is regarded as the most tasteful Crossover record of that era and one of the most innovative, with a sound that seamlessly combines influences from Black Flag, Black Sabbath and Discharge. The well thought out political lyrics to songs like "Mad World," "Intervention," and "Hungry Child" also helped to create an image for the band that was much more mature than the often unsophisticated followers of the Thrash trend. Even the Pushead artwork on the cover set new standards for the genre.

C.O.C. recorded two worthy follow up E.P.’s with Mike Dean in the band- "Technocracy" and "Six Songs With Mike Singing" before he left the band and they eventually departed from the Punk scene completely and recorded Metal/Rock records. While Corrosion of Conformity’s later records may have been more commercially successful than "Animosity" they would never match the record’s intensity or level of innovation. Most of their fans eventually felt alienated and C.O.C.’s early material became somewhat obscure. However at the beginning of this Summer fans were hit with the surprise news that Corrosion Of Conformity were reuniting the "Animosity" lineup and recording a new record as well as playing live shows across the country. Here in Southern California we will be lucky to see history made as the band will be headlining the Power of Riff Festival at The EchoPlex in Los Angeles, playing new material as well as songs from "Animosity" and "Technocracy." Attendance to this show is mandatory for all serious fans of 1980′s Crossover and an exam will follow.
