Peter Murphy preview: at The Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles CA on March 14, 2011

Former Bauhaus front man Peter Murphy is gearing up for a North American tour that will once again find the famed solo artist in southern California this March. Often referred to as the “Godfather of Goth”, Peter Murphy formed the genre blurring post-punk band Bauhaus in 1978, and would soon find himself a leading figure in the UK’s Goth rockexplosion. Bauhaus would disband five years later in 1983 and leave Peter Murphy an acclaimed cult like figure, a solo career would soon follow.

Peter would record and tour as a solo artist throughout the remainder of the 1980’s finding a whole new audience within the emerging American alternative rock scene. His first solo album produced few singles, most notably a cover of “Final Solution” by Pere Ubu and “The Light Pours Out of Me” written by The Buzzcocks Pete Shelley. Peters next album “Love Hysteria” would contain the made famous by MTV, hit “All Night Long” which would help his ever growing audience expand. His next effort “Deep” would serve as Peters Magnus Opum, an album that to this day is still regarded as his best body of work. The single, “Cuts You Up” spent seven weeks at the top of the U.S. Modern rock charts and would go on to be a huge international hit. The singles success would knock the Love & Rockets hit “So Alive” off the charts, a band containing the other 3 members of Bauhaus, ironic!

Several Bauhaus reunions would come to be in the following years; most notably the 1998 Resurrection tour and a 2005/2006 tour that saw the band play Coachella festival. After making a cameo in the latest Twilight installment, (his last being 1983’s Vampire flick The Hunger starring David Bowie) Peter is again focusing on his solo career. On Tour in support of his new album “Ninth” Peter will play concerts in the Los Angeles area, his first in the region since 2009. One could expect a few Bauhaus tracks thrown in his set, along side the already popular classic cuts spanning his solo career. If you can’t make it to the LA show at the Mayan Theatre, Peter is also playing at the nearby Majestic Theatre in Ventura March 11th and The Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana on March 13th.
