Buzzcocks preview – at Club Nokia June 5, 2010 and HOB

April 14, 2010

BuzzcocksThe Buzzcocks were a part of the first hand full of U.K. Punk, along with the Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Clash, and The Jam. While the Pistols set out to make anti- Pop music, the Buzzcocks embraced Pop music and made it their own, filtering it with a Punk attitude and simplicity. Songs like "Ever Fallen In Love? (With Someone You Shouldn't Have Fallen In Love With," "What Do I Get?," and "Fast Cars" seem to owe a lot to Herman's Hermits, who surely Johnny Rotten would have scoffed at. The beauty and charm of their songs is that they approach traditional song topics through the perspective of someone who seems to fail more often than succeeding- they're love songs for losers, Pop music for the unpopular.

In the past few years the Buzzcocks have traveled to the States to tour several times and thankfully they have lost nothing with age. Somehow Pete Shelley's voice seems to have never aged and he somehow hits the high notes that seem impossible to hit. Their sets generally include a few newer songs, but people who go to see them can expect to hear all of the band's old singles and a few more obscure gems. It's not clear how they do it, but the Buzzcocks still manage to pull off everything they did in the 1970's.
