It's hard to believe that Invade is Within the Ruins' second album-specifically when their first album (Creature) came out only last year.  The sheer technical proficiency and command of multiple heavy genres is extremely impressive.

From the atmosphere setting album opener, "Defining Oblivion" it's readily apparent that the listener is in for a crushingly dark sonic journey.  The intertwining twin guitars soaring high above the tumultuous undercurrent of the low end and vocal work on "Versus" is enough to make the faint of heart turn back.  The relentless pounding doesn't let up for the duration of the album either, even the instrumental tracks "Ataxia" and album closer "Roads" keep the gauntlet moving.



I'm particularly impressed by the production of the album as each song near seamlessly continues into the next, often with a guitar riff carrying over in-between the two.  The thing that keeps the album from becoming stale is the mastery of the combined genres.  Blast beats, breakdowns, soaring solos, pile driving bass lines keep the listener guessing.



If your collection of heavy handed hardcore is getting worn out or you're looking for a new technical outfit to obsess over, then I highly recommend Within the Ruins.  With an opening line like, "Woke up this morning and decided today wasn't good enough.  So tonight I'm drinking for all the wrong reasons, self destruction at its best," you simply can't go wrong.
