Strangely Attractive – Soul Control

August 22, 2009

Strangely Attractive CDWhen I imagine a band like Strangely Attractive's show, I picture a smokey lounge, filled with people, and lead singer Jupiter front and center on stage, pouring her heart and soul into the microphone, with Chis Gongora on bass, Henry Bermudez playing guitar, and John Rodriguez rocking out on his drum set. "Soul Control", released on, is a unique, technological and futuristic looking album, with the title ringing true to a variety of the lyrics/songs on the album.

First of all, when you first listen to a band and the first two bands you correlate them with are old school "No Doubt" and "X", you know you have a band who deserves to have their name out there. The album starts out with the track "Lasso the Moon", which has hints of surf punk and pop rock infused within it. "Don't Blame Me", a later song on "Soul Control", also has a surf punk base, and almost sounds like the beginning of an Agent Orange tune. The second song, "Do You Really" has a tune similar to Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper", but stands apart from the song later on, due to every member in the band having a part in the production. Another upbeat and pop-like song on "Soul Control" is the fourth song, "Since I Found You", an instrumentally-impressive track. Impressing me seems to be Strangely Attractive's forte, especially in the song titled "Beautiful Beaches", where Jupiter showcases her sultry and almost operatic voice. The song is almost sad because the lyrics seem to be about wanting to find truth by going into someone else's heart, which could explain the symbolic song title. My  favorite tune on "Soul Control" was "Greedy Man", where Jupiter also displays her lurid voice, and the drums, bass, and guitar are all embedded with fire and passion, a great balance to make an amazing track on a great album.

A lot of modern bands are all looking for a place to fit in in today's music scene. However, Strangely Attractive is different from the bands, one because of their sounds and how everyone is incorporated in the making of the music (instead of spotlighting one member), and also because they just want to pour their emotions out to make good music. Granted, every band wants to get their feelings out through what they do best, music, but I sense something very different about this band and how they handle themselves. I suggest you check them out and see for yourself, I promise you won't be disappointed!
