Pre Madonna – Demo

I really like listening to band demos because if you can sit through rough recordings of the band and become a fan then you know the real stuff is going to be great. I had this very experience when I listened to one of Orange County, CA's newest bands Pre Madonna. This two man outfit at this time is comprised of Shane Cox who plays bass and Ryan Nichols, the bands guitar player and  vocalist who is also in the band Cat Party. I was given this demo CD to listen to, which has 4 tracks and uses a drum machine that had been described to me as a "semi permanent" part of the band.

As I began to listen to the band I could now see that Ryan has a gift for writing music. The best way to describe it, is to perhaps talk about the guitar and Ryan's unique vocalization of the lyrics. I don't know if it bothers him when people refer to his music as reminiscent of Joy Division, but it is very hard to ignore the parallels between the two bands. The guitar work is very catchy and has a 80s punk quality while not sounding like a rip off of anything that has already been done before. Very refreshing to listen to a band that has such a unique style with strong roots in the past. The bass parts are very strong and give great strength to the songs, evening out the higher octaves that the guitar generally seem to stay in. I'm bad at writing reviews from a technical standpoint, but I know when I like something and this I can say that I really like!

I'm looking forward to listening to their upcoming 7 inch, and rest assured that once it's out we'll tell you all about it.
