Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – Sing in Japanese
September 19, 2011
"Sing in Japanese" is the second "countries" EP released by Punk cover band/super-group Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, following the Australia EP and will be amongst others such as Italy and Germany. It seems like an appropriate time to release this EP, due to the fact that Japan has been suffering since the massive earthquake that occurred earlier this year.
Although I'm not familiar with Japanese artists, I put my faith in the Gimme Gimme's hands, knowing they would make the unfamiliar songs sound great; alas, they've done just that. The 6-song EP begins with "Hero", originally by the Kai Band, and pretty much sums up how the rest of the EP is: fast and catchy; even though I can't understand a word Spike Slawson is singing, it manages to get stuck in my head for hours. One of the things that stuck out the most on this EP was the fact that almost all the songs include introductions from classic Punk songs; for example, "Kekkon Shiyoyo" borrows the beginning from Social Distortion's "Story of My Life", and "C-C-C" does the same for Agent Orange's "Living in Darkness". "Sing in Japanese" is what you would expect from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (and I mean this in a good way). Whether you're fluent in Japanese, or don't know anything about the language, this EP is a worthy investment.
