The Carry-Ons – Succession
May 7, 2011
It's hard to describe the overall style of "Succession": the vocals seem to range from alternative to pop punk to melodic hardcore punk, in the fashion of Bad Religion during the 90's. Released on Stik Man Records, "Succession" from the Carry-Ons starts out on a great note- the lyrics and energy put into the song "Churchill's" instantly capture the ears of the listener.
After listening to the rest of the album, it's obvious why "Churchill's" was chosen as the first song on "Succession". Although they have all the key ingredients to create a good album, I felt they tried too hard to mix a bunch of different styles onto one album, causing a clash that throws listeners off; most of the songs also seem to lose the vigor that was held during "Churchill's". Along with the first track, "Music City" and "All Along the Cell Tower" are worth a listen. If the Carry-Ons would have focused on one particular style of music to perform, "Succession" would definitely be a solid and enjoyable album.
