Poor Kids Radio Party – at The Poor Kids Mansion – Los Angeles, CA

January 9, 2012

Poor Kids RadioThe first week of the New Year has come and gone, but not without a few shows or parties that have set the tone for what the rest of the year will bring. Los Angeles is known for lots of things that really set the city apart from any other city or “scene” , and the Poor Kids Radio show is a fine example of what makes LA a happening place like no other.

With a city as rich in punk rock history as LA, it only makes sense that a radio show dedicated to playing the best in old school punk and metal would exist in our very own backyard. Best of all, it would just happen to take place in a house that’s been transformed into the appropriately dubbed “Poor Kids Mansion”. The interior of the house is a perfect setting for a punk party and the walls like all punk houses are covered with awesome punk gig posters of years past. All of what happens at this party is broadcasted via webcam for viewers to gawk at while they listen to classic punk vinyl hand picked by DJ Dirty Danny. Interviews take place via a webcam positioned at host’s Dougie and Danger Russ who often have guests who are in bands or fixtures in the punk and metal scenes. Pasts guests have included Dave Lombardo of Slayer and London May of Samhain.

Poor Kids Radio
This weeks show had great guests who’ve all played a role in the long history of the LA punk scene; those guests included Gary Tovar (founder of Golden voice and head of GV 30), Otis (punk graphic artist), Billy Bones and Tequila Mockingbird. Tales of the scene were exchanged live on air and viewable on their site at www.poorkidsradio.com

The interviews were all very insightful and a punk rock history lesson to say the least. Gary and Otis even gave away rare posters and shirts to listeners calling in and emailing the poor kids.

Make sure to tune in next week as they go live on the air at midnight! It’s a fun way to spend your Saturday evening and early Sunday morning. So tune in, turn on and burn out with Poor Kids Radio.

Horror Epics – at The Bronson Bar – Hollywood, CA

January 5, 2012

LA biggest and newest monthly free Punk rock party kicked off just this last December, and by the looks of it - things over at Horror Epics are only getting better with time!

The night known as Horror Epics hit the Bronson Bar this past Thursday and was a hit from the first DJ set till closing time at 2am. Sets by host’s DJ’s; Dirty Danny, Ding-bat, Mara and guest DJ Crazy Craig from KNAC spun the best in Punk all night never once spinning duds. The best in UK 82, thrash, hardcore, death rock, 77, crust, LA/OC punk classics and Goth were played at maximum volume and enjoyed by every bar patron and patio smoker. Unlike other bars in Hollywood that primarily play poser punk rawk sets by adult scene-kid DJ’s, Horror Epics presented by Lethal Amounts and RIP productions does it the right way as its resident DJ’s are real Punk rockers who’ve been involved in the LA punk scene for years (decades actually). Legendary DJ Howie Pyro of D Generation and Intoxica Radio even made a brief cameo before the nights end!

With such variety in Punk rock music it’s a real treat to hear so many of its different styles played in one night to everyone’s liking all for free. With the DJ’s spinning nothing but vinyl it makes everything twice as mean and ultimately the best Punk rock bar party in town. Did we mention it’s also free?!?! You must be 21 to enter! Go ahead and make a request, if its good the DJ’s likely have it and will play it during their set!

The good people over at Horror Epics plan to have guest DJ’s spinning monthly with 45 Graves very own Dinah Cancer taking over selector duties in February! Support the real deal and come out to Horror Epics for the best in Punk rock and alcohol related fun every first Thursday of the month.

Bigwheel will see ya there in February as Dinah Cancer brings her touch of “Evil” to Horror Epics at The Bronson bar!

Cool stores in Hollywood – Posers – Hollywood

December 21, 2011

Posers HollywoodAs anyone knows that has been up to Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, the place is a mix of eclectic shops yet one store that is a must go to is Posers Hollywood. Sure, we do need to fully disclose that they are a Big Wheel advertiser, however you will quickly determine that there is no bias here, just go to the store and see for yourself that the place has the best selection of everything you would want.Posers has a very long history in serving the needs of the music scene going way back which makes them a perfect fit with everyone around.

The store is actually 3 stores all under the same banner. One store contains the largest mind numbing collection of Fred Perry that you not find anywhere else. Upstairs is an entire floor of shoes, Creepers, boots, high and low tops -it is a collection of shoes that would make Imelda Marcos blush (if you don't get the Imelda reference, go look it up). The other store contains primarily Ben Sherman and Merc as well as many other brands. Then last but not least in any regard is the exclusive Dr. Martens store dedicated to only and all things Doc Marten. This is the part where we need to get really serious, if you want to be able view, try on and get any Doc Marten under the sun, then just come here first instead of wasting your time going all over town. Check out a review of the original made in England Doc Martens  HERE

We have put together a short video for you below so that you can get an idea of how insane the amount of stuff they carry is.... seeing is believing. As a special note for those that are not shy, ask for Phil who is always there. If you are over 21, he will most likely serve you up an ice cold Newcastle beer while you browse around the store -how cool is that !!! For you folks that are way outside the Los Angeles area to visit the store yourself, give them a call and they will mail order you whatever you are looking for.

Video overview of the stores and what they carry, yet nothing beats seeing it in person

CicLAvia – Bike Event – Los Angeles, CA

October 9, 2011

CicLAvia - Bike Event - Los Angeles, CA - Sunday October 9, 2011CicLAvia means “bike way” in Spanish. About 30 years ago Ciclovía originally started in Bogotá, Colombia which was a weekly street closure event…. and NOW Los Angeles. Sunday's event would mark the 3rd one of these that has been held since it's inception in 2010. There really is no official starting place or finish to this bike event, participants pretty much join the fun wherever they want along the 10 mile route. For many though, they considered the starting point of the event to be at the corner of Melrose and Heliothope where Orange 20 Bicycles and Bicycle Kitchen reside in East Hollywood at the Bicycle District.
CicLAvia - Bike Event - Los Angeles, CA - Sunday October 9, 2011 Photo
A grip of people hooked up for the ride that would take them through, Koreatown, to MacArthur Park, into downtown, then over Olvera Street, to Little Tokyo, down through the Fashion District into south downtown LA, across the 4th Street Bridge over to Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights. The ride started at 10am and would last till 3pm which would give the participants plenty of time to go cruise through the LA streets without having to content with any traffic.

The crew that participated with the Big Wheel staffers are not expert bike riders in any regard and found that the 10 mile ride was easy to do and any rider of any level could tick off this 20 mile round trip ride. Water, bathrooms and food were everywhere along the route, so this was no Tour de France hardcore thing, it was a great ride to socialize, meet anther people along the way and to trip on the sites of Los Angeles that many of us normally miss in our everyday busy lives. The crowd of bicyclist, walkers, skaters and whatever else that rolled was well over 125,000. Bikes of all shapes and sizes and the ages varied with some participants from other states and even different countrys.... this was an event of the people.
