5 Minutes Of Fame for the week of March 21, 2010

March 21, 2010

5 Minutes Of Fame is the newest feature at Big Wheel and its purpose is to present short news snippets in a quick and efficient manner so that we can provide fresh news that is related to underground music. Ideally this will be a way to get out a wealth of interesting information out in a way that takes less than five minutes to read. If you have any news that you would like to be considered for inclusion in 5 Minutes we encourage you to submit them HERE. Look for a new edition here every Sunday.

Opening this past weekend the Joan Jett produced film, The Runaways was released in theaters and provides a fast paced, loud and wild depiction of the all female late 1970's rock band through the eyes of a former member of the band.

Also a new band called Off featuring Kieth Morris (Circle Jerks/Black Flag) and members of Redd Kross are making their debut at South By Southwest in Texas. No recordings have surfaced yet but their list of influences include the MC5 and 1970's hard rock. Should be interesting to see where that one goes.

Livewire records will soon be releasing a 12" E.P. from a new band called Skull Crusher which features members of the Livewire staff. This record has a heavy vibe in the vein of Cro Mags, Leeway, Judge, and early Metallica. Check it out for yourself at

Orange County's Media Blitz will finally be releasing their long overdue 7" this week and will celebrate their record release at a show on March 26 at the Riff Haus in Fullerton, California. The band combines influences from late 80's East Coast hardcore with more modern hardcore Punk like Outbreak and Shark Attack. Fans of Warzone, Gorilla Biscuits, JFA, Municipal Waste, and Rabies/COP/Bad Reaction look out for this one.

A new movie is in the works called "All Ages" which will document the beginnings of Boston hardcore. It's being directed by Drew Smith, who operated the infamous Gallery East venue in the early 1980's. Interviewees so far have included SSD, DYS, Negative FX, and some less obvious but still relevant people, such as Michael Patrick McDonald (author of All Souls and Easter Rising), and Thrasher Magazine editor Jake Phelps.
