Peeling Grey – The World Is Not Sorry

December 11, 2011

Peeling Grey - The World Is Not SorryPeeling Grey are LA’s newest noisemakers and their debut release is creating quite the buzz around town, and for good reason! The disc itself starts off with a track that bears the very name of the band, quite a clever introduction.

It gives listeners an insight into the world of Peeling Grey; a light but gloomy place that probably hasn’t changed a whole lot since 1981. The dominant guitar and keyboard work on The World Is Not Sorry is very well put together and a bit reminiscent of 80’s post punk stylings of years past. Tracks like James Quarterly and The Strip show off a side of Peeling Grey that may have more in common with the classic UK scene than it does of LA‘s, none the less they are great standout cuts.

The light vocal approach heard on most tracks works well with the bands mellow vibe and the various tempos and drum patterns give this album quite a variety for being a debut release from a new band that hasn’t existed all that long. Some of the songs that made it onto The World’ were previously floating around on a demo cd; though now in their realized form it’s a pleasure to hear how the band has evolved. With closing tracks The End of the Road’ and Faith in Forever’ it is easily recognizable that Peeling Grey has loads of potential and are most certainly an exciting band to keep your eye on. I’d recommend this album to any fan of The Chameleons, Siouxsie and The Banshees and anyone into post-punk in general.

December 10, 2011

JUSTICE TONIGHT - featuring Mick Jones & Friends - at The Abc - Glasgow, Scotland - December 10, 2011The Gigs are for the Justice Tonight tour, which aims to promote the campaign set up by the friends and family of the 96 people who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. Mick Jones will perform Clash play a set of Clash songs for the first time from my knowledge in about 19 years. He will be joined by the The Farm and Pete Wylie and special guests in each city.We start off the evening with the Farm, who get straight into it with “groovy train” quickly followed by “stepping stone” but it is there anthem song “all together now “ that has everyone singing along, then there is a great roar as they are joined on the stage by Pete Wylie and Mick Jones

Pete reminds everybody even though we are here for the music, it’s all about the campaign and that nobody on the bill is getting paid they are all doing it free. He says he hopes they play this at her funeral the next song is “the day Margaret Thatcher dies” which gets yet another huge roar.

Then it is time for what I and most of the crowd are here for, the clash set. From the first notes of “train in vain” the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I never thought I would see Mick plays these songs, it is quickly followed by “stay free” and “Clampdown”. Peter Hooton from the Farm is up next and says we get to sing our favourite songs and mine is “white man in Hammersmith” and he does it real well.

We have short break for some speeches then it is the turn of tonight’s special guests who are Glasgow’s own Glasvegas who do one quick song and then are joined by Mick and the guys, James (Glasvegas) sings “Bank Robber” and with his leather jacket and certain lights on him he looks unerringly  like a young Jo strummer. Mick is smiling all the while and then he says I can’t sing it like Jo, am going to sing it my way but am sure he would like it “London calling” has every one singing along.

Then they all go off, everyone comes back on and for the second time tonight we get “all together now” everyone in the room is singing along, it is over as the venue has a curfew, have we time for a quick one, yes is the shout, John Robb (Goldblade) who has compared each show, jumps onto the pit as they speed straight into “Janie Jones” he is singing along with the crowd and gets pulled into the crowd and disappears, the crowd have the mic and are singing the song. John re-appears ok; it is over, but what a night.
