March 25, 2011

Frank Turner show previewUK folk singer/song writer, Frank Turner will be making his way back to Los Angeles on May 5th to play two exclusive shows at Hotel Cafe. Frank Turner has played more than 1,000 shows since he started his solo career in 2006, however has only played L.A. a hand full of times.

Word of mouth has spread like wildfire. His live performances have earned him a great following in the United States, where he sells out every venue he plays as a headlining act. He recently toured with Social Distortion to support their newest release "Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes" and now it on tour to celebrate his own new album "England Keep My Bones", which is set to be released later on this year.

One big component to making this performance particularly special is the venue. Hotel Cafe is known for being one of the best venues in Los Angeles for live acoustic shows. Also the attendees will be among the first to hear his songs from his highly anticipated new EP. If you can get your hand on a ticket, you are truly in for a  treat.

Sid! – By Those Who Really Knew Him

March 23, 2011

Sid! - By Those Who Really Knew Him DVDForget the hype, the drama, and notoriety that pursues the Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious decades after his early death at age 21. The truth of the matter is, it seems the public has garnered a wrong image of Vicious, and a documentary titled "Sid! By Those Who Really Knew Him," sets the record straight by depicting a more thoroughand honest look at one of Punk rock's most tragic heroes. Released through Odeon Entertainment and distributed by MVD, the documentary details an intimate glimpse that better provides Vicious's background in a way never depicted before.

Former close friends of Sid Vicious narrate the entire documentary as they present Sid's rise to infamy and chronicle his life pre-Sex Pistols. Within the documentary, close friends helping to narrate the film consist of PIL's Jah Wobble, David Vanian, Rat Scabies, Vivienne Westwood, and Marco Pirroni among many more familiar faces. The documentary is the first to offer a look at the life of Sid in a way that does not portray him as sadistic or dangerous, but instead captures Vicious as another human who encounters the struggles of life. "Sid! By Those Who Really Knew Him" is a documentary that successfully represents a man who has inevitably been misrepresented and misunderstood since the 1970s.

80 minute documentary plus bonus material:
* 10 track audio CD of Sid live in New York 1978 with Kane & Nolan!

45 Grave – A Pretty Mess – The UV’s – at The Blue Cafe – Long Beach, CA

March 19, 2011

45 Grave - A Pretty Mess - The UV's - at The Blue Cafe - Long Beach, CA - March 19, 2011An interesting night to say the least. After an awesome dinner of savoury tapas, flaky empanadas, seafood paella, and top-notch sangria at Sevilla's, the guys from Big Wheel and I headed off to the Blue Cafe in DTLB to catch this show. I had not seen 45 Grave in many years, and was interested to see A Pretty Mess, as Stig has played their CD quite a bit on Stench Radio.

First up was The UV's. I caught the last bit of ther set. But from what I did see, there was a lot of raw energy there, and lead vocalist Mia X  can really belt it out from a growl to a howl. It will be interesting to see where they go with their sound. I will be be on the lookout for them out again.

Next up was A Pretty Mess. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect from this band. I thought they were really good on disc, but live? Let's just say, it was akin to being hit by a bus with people shooting bazookas at me from the windows! They are one of the tightest bands I've seen in a long time. And I mean really tight.

The call and response within the band was on point, the guitars tones were perfectly crunchy and backed by an amazing, heavy rhythm section. Vocalist Dee Skusting has incredible stage presence, but it's obvious that she is really enjoying herself. It's refreshing to see a frontperson who not only is void of all the pretentious posturing we see so much of in recent years, but has fun with the musicians she is playing with. If you haven't checked out A Pretty Mess, do yourself a big favour and see the future.

And now for the headliners of the night, 45 Grave. Here is a band that has never disappointed, regardless of personnel changes over the last 32 years. Dinah Cancer is every bit the icon of female fronted punk now as she's always been. She sent chills down my back and stirred people into an undead frenzy! A mix of new and old was a tasty treat indeed.

Frank Agnew nails the songs with that musical precision that is ingrained into the Agnew DNA. Bassist Brandden Blackwell banged out the darkest of dark low-end with a menacing grin, while Tom Coyne couldn't have been a more amazing drummer if he had set his kit on fire (seriously technical prowess on the skins)! Dinah delivered a performance that proves time and time again, that she is truly the Queen of L.A. Punk and deathrock.

She knows how it's supposed to be done...all at once she exhibits beauty, confidence, power, grace, intimidation, fun, and is honest and engaging. But I expected nothing less...

Setlist:
Violent World - Bad Love - 45 Grave - Dream Hits - Highway 666 - Evil - Riboflavin - Night Of The Demons - Anti - Concerned Citizen - Party Time - Surf Bat - Wax - Black Cross

DEVO – at Club Nokia – Los Angeles, CA

March 19, 2011

DEVO - at Club Nokia - Los Angeles, CA - March 19, 2011The one and only Devo made an illustrious appearance at Club Nokia this past Saturday to an energetic crowd of Spuds, mostly in Devo regalia, making this a very interactive night between band and their army of loyal fans.

Devo gave the world a glimpse of what the future would be like over 30 years ago with their stage show that suggested they were indeed from another planet and their performance last night proved to be the futuristic experience that has made their live concerts memorable events second to none. The universe footage provided on the backing screens did help to give the impression that we were not here on earth, but rather witnessing a concert in another galaxy unlike our own. Vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh and the other 4 members that make up Devo made their way to their radically designed stage before a packed house. The intro video in sync with the spectacular light show gave the impression that this show was as much a visual experience as it was an auditory one.
DEVO at Club Nokia
“Don’t Shoot (I’m a man)” served as the right intro as it’s tempo and accompanying visuals set the tone for the wild party Devo were to bring to the stage. Hit after hit is what was brought upon by the band never once stopping in between songs till after their bouncy version of “That’s Good!” to where bassist Gerald Casale took a moment to say “Greeting Spuds!” before kicking into the bands most known hit “Whip it!” to where the crowd truly danced their asses off like never before. Throwing hits so early into the set is rather a risky move to make, though with Devo’s back catalog stretching so far back and being as expansive as it is, they have no problem filling the remainder of their performance with deep cuts.
DEVO at Club Nokia Los Angeles photo
The playfulness of Devo remained through out the set where they marched in formation in circles and danced about the stage like a synchronized marching band often jumping together and spinning about waving and saluting. That fit in perfect with their unusual cover of the Rolling Stones gem “Satisfaction”, its robotic rhythm had both the band and crowd moving together in unison sort of like a staged music video shoot. The unusual campy ness continued along with their next song, a cover of the Johnny Rivers anthem “Secret Agent Man”, of course Devo added their own spin on it, giving it a future retro feel, sounding more fresh than ever.
DEVO
Drummer Josh Freese and bassist Gerald Casale are as absolute as a rhythm section can be, and this was indisputable during “Mongoloid” in which all of the balcony viewers rose to their feet and sang along. The bands first single dating back to 1977’ is a sure show stopper, as the fans applause was reminiscent of an thunderous avalanche crashing down on a snowy village. The band then exited the stage for a brief costume change and video change over which prompted the band to throw out Energy Dome (plastic Devo Hats) into the crowd. The remainder of the set saw the 5 piece rip through song after song in a joyous manner never really stopping for breaks, much like a live hit’s machine.

Not one to rely too much on the past, the rather infamous Charlie Sheen/Tiger Blood and Japanese tsunami incidents were brought up on stage causing quite an uproar from the crowd, not in a negative way, but as an acknowledgment as to where the world is in 2011. The band stripped down to their black under armor and closed out the night with the track “It’s a Beautiful World” reminding the crowd that if Godzilla were to swim over from Japan and take a peak over at what was happening at Club Nokia, he too would agree that it is indeed a beautiful world where Devolution sure has taken place.

The crowd let out a roar and applauded the band as they bowed center stage and waved goodbye promising to make their return again later in the year.
DEVO
This concert was to have taken place a few months back, but due to an injury it was postponed until last night. The much needed time for recovery gave Devo the fuel and energy they needed to put on such a spectacle as last nights. In other words the wait was well worth it. The crowd consisting of teenagers with their parents and everyone else in between ranging from 15-50 sure would agree, there wasn’t an empty seat in the house and all the spuds left the show proudly adoring their Devo pride.

Once again Devo have proved that Devolution is real and that they’re definitely not a nostalgia act by any means, their solid hour and half performance was nothing short of astonishing and a real treat to all fans old and new. To think most of the band has played for decades just shows that success hasn’t slowed down Devo or thinned out their comrades of fans. Devo is a must see before you die live act. Over and Out !

Set list
Don’t Shoot - Peek A Boo - What We Do - Going Under - Fresh - That’s Good - Girl U Want - Whip It - Planet Earth - Satisfaction (Rolling Stones cover) - Secret Agent Man (Johnny Rivers cover) - Uncontrollable Urge - Mongoloid - Jocko Homo - Smart Patrol/Mr DNA - Gates of Steel - Devo Corporate Anthem - Freedom of Choice - It’s A Beautiful World.
