Peter and the Test Tube Babies – at The Wellesley Inn – Fife, Scotland

January 22, 2011

Peter and the Test Tube Babies show reviewI arrived at the Wellesley Inn and didn’t expect what I saw. It was a pub with a room at the back for bands to play, no stage - well very little at least. Enough room for the band but Peter would have to stand in the crowd! Before the band came on the land lady made an announcement that the bar had no change left and if you wanted a drink you’d have to have the exact amount of money.Comical indeed, not well prepared!

Peter and the Test Tube Babies kicked off with “Moped Lads” and followed with “Run like hell”. The crowd were too close and boisterous and the speaker almost toppled on top of Dell. We had a brief respite while they fixed the leads and then the carnage began again, everybody getting up close and personal with the band. One guy even tries to get Pete to pose for photo with him in the middle of the show.
Peter and the Test Tube Babies photo
In the song “Up Yer Bum”, where Peter constantly gives the crowd the middle finger, a young female stood in front of him waggling her bum at him. “Maniac” had Peter pulling some very scary zombie like faces, eyes rolling back into his head. “Intensive Care” and “Transvestite” were over in flash before we got the Tubes anthem “Banned from the Pubs” which had the whole venue erupting. Even the promoter was dancing on the bar.

It was finished and the crowd chanted “one more song”. Peter arrived on stage with the tongue in cheek remark saying “well you should have paid more!” so a fan duly obliges and puts a £1 coin in his hand! All laugh and the band played the “Devil in Disguise” followed by “Elvis is dead”.

I do like intimate gigs but sometimes the fans can get too close and can be really annoying interrupting the gig. But ever the professionals Peter and the band didn’t allow this to stop them putting on a great show. They are a well oiled machine and play brilliantly together.

Bad Otis Link and Conjoined Art Show at Corpo Nason – Santa Monica, CA

January 22, 2011

Bad Otis Art ShowOn Saturday night the place to be was at one Los Angeles' coolest places to see art, Corpo Nason gallery at Bergamot Station Arts complex in Santa Monica. Like always they host an excellent art exhibit opening and reception. For the uninitiated, an artist reception is the opening night where an artist shows their prime pieces, they usually have tons of free drinks and some, like Corpo Nason will feature live music. Tonight’s reception featured the works of Bad Otis Link along with a group exhibit.

Artist reception: Saturday, January 22, 8:00 - 11:30 pm
Featuring: Bad Otis Link as part of Conjoined in 3D
Dimensional group art exhibition curated by Chet Zar
Food by: The Grilled Cheese Truck and Don Chow Taco Truck
Live music from: Joe Wood and the Lonely Ones

The reception was pretty packed no matter where you went in and around the gallery's surrounding area. Many that have taken in art openings in the past at Corpo Nason continuously commented how this may have been the most overwhelming turn out they had ever seen at this gallery. With a mix of live entertainment, some excellent art and a great all around vibe -this art opening was the place to be.

"Junk" New Puppets and Crap In gallery 2 presented 3D work of demented puppets, paintings, drawings all in the classic Bad Otis Link style.

In Conjunction with Conjoined this show will mostly consist of three dimensional art: puppets and experimental foam work. Otis likes to inject odd little creatures, birds (messengers in many ancient myths) and structures into his work and the puppets are all demented and the crap is all recycled, a statement by the artist on the earths environmental problems and the BP oil spill.
Self-taught and self-educated, bad Otis Link sharpened his distinct style in the late 70s through the mid 90s as one of Los Angeles premier and most notorious Punk rock graphic artists.

Bad Otis has designed alot of band logos, record covers, posters and produced merchandise for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Damned, Social Distortion, TSOL, The Adolescents, Danzig, The Circle Jerks, Wasted Youth, along with many of the 80's Goldenvoice concert shirts and flyers. In the early 90s, he designed and published the "True Life Murderers Trading Cards" which was the first set on the subject matter and attracted mass media attention. Otis' art has appeared in countless magazines, films and his projects have been praised and equally viciously attacked in the media by moralist groups and media hungry politicians.

The other portion of the show, Conjoined - In 3D! presented classic sculptures, life like models, surreal assemblages, mixed media paintings, life sized toys and other conjoined works in 3-D. Curated by Chet Zar this show will include many artists of Pop-Surrealism as well as motion picture industry special effects and well known art toy artists.

From the twisted and bizarre to the majestic and unbelievable there will be many unusual works and all in 3D!

This exhibit will be on display until February 12, 2011. You will want to make sure you head over and see these exhibited works while they are still there.

Northeast Records night with The Booze Hounds – Mutiny – Henchmen 21 – The ID – at Old Town Pub – Pasadena, CA

January 21, 2011

Northeast Records nightFor the past year Northeast Records has hosted monthly shows at the Old Town Pub in Pasadena. This last Friday was the 13th show they've put on and the one year anniversary that these shows have happening. The bands that play these shows are mostly local bands, and every once in awhile a touring band, which is always appreciated.
There's always a friendly vibe at Northeast nights, very welcoming to all that come to support the locals. Tonight's line up of bands provided the perfect environment for drinking and fun.

The ID a rookie to the NE nights bill, had a great vibe and although it was early in the night, still brought in a nice crowd.

Henchmen 21 set was solid as always.

Between songs one of the members always had some sarcastic comment to say to one another, or even to one of fans enjoying the show. There relaxed attitudes on stage definitely agreed with the audience that night.

Mutiny is an awesome trio from just around the corner of Pasadena, Eagle Rock. Garry Dunn From NE Loves them and said "They are a no bull shit band, That goes all out" And watching the set they played that describes them perfectly.

As they were about to play the song Mr. Bartender, which seems to be a favorite of there fans, as well as a friend of there's, Kyle from Henchmen 21, he was asked to come up and sing it and they welcomed him to the stage.

The chemistry between Kyle and the band was dead on, which made for a rad version of the song.

The Booze Hounds, featured on Northeast Records, head lined the night of fun.

Fans in the pub were yellin along to their songs, with fists in the air. They brought such a great energy to the stage, the fans threw it right back to them.

For a serious good time, don't miss out on the next Northeast Records night. Stay in touch and get all the info on there events on the Facebook at: www.facebook.com/northeastrecords

4th Annual Sunset Strip Music Festival is scheduled for August 18 – 20, 2011

January 18, 2011

Organizers for the Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF) have announced that the fourth annual event will take place Thursday, August 18, Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20 on The Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California.

The three-day SSMF 2011 kicks off August 18 with a tribute to a Sunset Strip icon. In 2010, SSMF honored legendary guitarist Slash for his contributions to The Sunset Strip. Other previous honorees have included rock icon Ozzy Osbourne (2009) and Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine (2008) – all of whom helped create the vibrant music scene on The Sunset Strip. SSMF continues Friday and Saturday with dozens of musical artists of different genres performing at venues including The Roxy Theatre, Key Club, Viper Room, Whisky A Go-Go, Cat Club and House of Blues Sunset Strip.

SSMF 2011 will include an all-day street festival on Saturday, August 20 between San Vicente Boulevard and Doheny Drive. The street festival includes outdoor stages, live music in the venues, a beer garden, a VIP rooftop lounge, vendors and interactive experiences throughout the day and into the night.

“We are thrilled that the Sunset Strip Music Festival continues to grow and attract new fans each year. The festival embodies the true spirit of The Sunset Strip, with individuals, venues and businesses working together to create a signature event that celebrates not only the boulevard’s musical legacy but also its future,” noted SSMF Executive Director Todd Steadman. “We’re working to ensure that this year’s event continues to exceed fans’ expectations.”

“This year we are really looking to take advantage of the tremendous amount of exposure and space available on this legendary boulevard. We are building upon the interactive experiences for attendees, and exploring ways to give our sponsors increased exposure among this crowd of young, energetic and tech-savvy individuals,” stated Festival Managing Director Karmen Beck. “SSMF is also furthering its online presence and social media reach to allow fans to interact with, and influence, the festival throughout the year.”

The 2010 SSMF street festival attracted 13,000 attendees, an increase of 3,000 from the previous year. The outdoor stages hosted performances from The Smashing Pumpkins, Slash (featuring Fergie and Myles Kennedy), Common, Kid Cudi, Travie McCoy, Semi Precious Weapons, Neon Trees, Steel Panther, Saint Motel and Big B, while the venues featured more than 70 bands throughout the day, including Oh No Not Stereo, Nikki & Rich, Vanaprasta, Billy Boy On Poison and more.
