Hayseed Dixie – Ed Tudor Pole – UK Tour 2010

February 24, 2010

Hayseed Dixie formed in 2001 with the release of their first album, titled "A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC”. Hailing from the Appalachian Mountains of the South Eastern United States the band consists of:

Barley Scotch - vocals, guitar and fiddle
Reverend Don Wayne Reno - banjo and vocals
Deacon Dale Reno - mandolin, guitar and vocals
Jake "Bakesnake" Byers - bass and vocals

Having sold over 500,000 records worldwide the band has successfully spread like a virus to every continent except Antarctica. Hayseed Dixie’s ‘rockgrass’ (bluegrass mixed with rock) comes to Scotland for their annual sellout shows. I first photographed Hayseed in 2004, since then I have seen them over 50 times and they have become very good friends.

Supporting for some of this tour was guest Ed Tudor Pole, who came to the spotlight after appearing in the Sex Pistols movie “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle” as a possible replacement for Johnny Rotten. He sang “Who Killed Bambi” in the movie. Ed released two albums in the 80’s and had a top ten hit with “Swords of a Thousand Men”

The Lemon Tree Aberdeen, UK February 24, 2010

The first show was in Aberdeen, Ed had got train all the way from London to Aberdeen and just arrived not long before he was due to go on. I think he was bit tired but put on a good show with his battered acoustic guitar, singing songs and pulling faces like only he can.

We got talking and he said he was taking the train to each of the shows and we said we would arrange travel for him. And we did, luckily, because the trains had been canceled the next day due to snow.

Hayseed came on to a rapturous applause and proceeded to play regular songs that the crowd always demand - “Ace of Spades”, “Walk This Way”, “Poop in a Jar” and “Holiday”. The fans wanted to hear the new songs too - “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Tolerance” from the new album. As usual the Lemon Tree crowd never quite get into the show in a wild fashion, just more calmly watching the show.

The Ironworks Inverness 25-02-10

The Ironworks is a good sized venue that I would liken to a big gymnasium. Ed puts on a better show as he is not so tired. Highlight for me is the “I Like Blackjacks” song.

Hayseed come on and do the 1 hour 45 minute set, playing to a bit more livelier crowd and hang about to meet the fans after.

The Woodend Barn Banchory February 26, 2010

The Woodend Barn is a barn just out side the small town of Banchory. It is a small venue 300 capacity, but holds good memories for me as it is where I got married (a medieval wedding) but that’s a different story.

It is close up and personal stage, where you can almost touch the band if you want. Ed and Hayseed both put on a great show, the best for both of them yet.

The ABC Glasgow February 27, 2010

So Glasgow was gonna be my last show for this year, and it is usually the best one. I was not disappointing!

Ed plays by far his best show to 1000 people, led onto the stage by a piper. When he sings “I Like Blackjacks” a packet of blackjacks is thrown onto the stage! He bounds about the stage looking totally relaxed and enjoying himself.

When he sings “Who Killed Bambi” the venue erupts and he is finished, but the crowd are screaming for “Swords of a Thousand Men” which he duly obliges and a massive sing along ensues to many happy faces.

Hayseed come on stage to the biggest roar of the tour so far. Glasgow fans always get into the sense of the occasion, many with dungarees, straw hats and dressed up as hillbillies. Even though it is the same show as the previous evenings there is an energy and extra bit of speed in the performance and they rip through songs rapidly. As they sing “Alien Abduction Probe” I see Don Wayne point to the crowd and I see a few fans have put on alien masks. This brings a smile to mine and the bands face.

They finish off with “Duelling Banjos” (which was co-written by Don and Dale’s dad).

The band are told they had to leave the stage quickly so no time sign CDs etc, so they tell the fans to meet them outside, which they duly do. However the police arrive and tell them to go back inside as there is too big a crowd in the street.

The new album from Hayseed Dixie, Killer Grass, is out now!

British Punk Pioneers – GBH release new album in April 2010 on Hellcat Records

February 24, 2010

New GBH album coming in April 2010

February 24, 2010 - Los Angeles, CA - After years of speculation, groundbreaking English hardcore band GBH has announced plans to release their eleventh studio album, Perfume and Piss, via Hellcat Records on April 6.  Fans can check out a new song, "Kids Get Down," on the band's MySpace page: www.myspace.com/gbh

There isn't a self-respecting gutter Punk, hardcore kid or subcultural miscreant alive who hasn't seen the GBH logo emblazoned on the back of a leather jacket, a denim vest, or a torn-up t-shirt. And now the world will be slapped upside the head with another reminder as to exactly why GBH is so important, in the form of Perfume and Piss, the legendary and iconic Punk band's first album for Hellcat Records.

Barn-burning, fist-pumping, palace-gates-storming tracks like "Kids Get Down," "Cadillac One" and "This is Not the Real World" carry the torch forward with the band's trademark fury that is alternately nihilistic, optimistic, pessimistic, anarchist, violent, humorous and deadly serious all at once.

Charged GBH have been a band for over 30 years and their longevity is a testament to their purity of sound and vision. Although, as vocalist and founding member Colin Abrahall tells it, there was never anything close to a "plan."

"We didn't think it'd last a week when we first got together," he says, with a laugh. "None of us could really play our instruments or do our specific job within the band. We just kind of winged it for a while. If you were born the day we formed in 1979, you'd be a mature adult now!"

Perfume and Piss is, in the band's own words, the "best album we've done in a long, long time." The album was created in fits and starts (two weeks on, two weeks off) which allowed them to fine-tune the material and compose a more complete feeling album. "We're really pleased with it," says Colin.

"We've been on various dodgy labels in the past and ever since Hellcat first started, we've wanted to be associated with it," he remarks. "To actually sign with Hellcat is a dream come true for us."

Perfume and Piss Tracklisting:

   1. Unique - 2:28
   2. Kids Get Down - 2:03
   3. Perfume And Piss- 2:46
   4. Cadillac One - 3:17
   5. San Jose Wind - 2:19
   6. Dead Man Walking - 2:37
   7. Invisible - 3:04
   8. This Is Not The Real World - 2:49
   9. Polytoxic - 3:00
  10. Ballads - 3:00

  12. Going Sideways - 3:43

AFI – Black Sails on the Sunset

February 23, 2010

AFIBlack Sails on the Sunset is AFI’s fourth full-length release, and their first obvious step toward the dark rock we’re all used to. Although their hardcore influences are still at the heart of nearly every song (“Exsanguination,” “The Prayer Position” and “At a Glance”), the lyrics take a decidedly more poetic focus. The stand out examples include “God Called in Sick Today,” “Midnight Sun” and “Clove Smoke Catharsis”.

If its one thing AFI has managed to do, for years now, is to maintain a level of unity within their fan base. Much like many metal bands, there is a general sense of, “you’re not like anyone else, because no one else is like you—except us. We are together in our individuality.” This thought process is enforced with tracks like “Strength Through Wounding” and the gang vocal chanting, “Through our bleeding, we are one!” It’s this encouragement and the simple fact that no other band sounds like them, with the exception of Thought Riot (but they didn’t last very long), that keeps AFI head and shoulders above their Punk rock peers.

If you’re a fan of their entire catalog, then this album belongs in your collection. If you’re not crazy about their last few albums and the massive sonic change the band has gone through, this is probably the crown jewel of their anthology (next to, maybe, The Art of Drowning—the bands peak performance, in my opinion). If you’re a modern-day fan, this would be a good starting point for you to look into the band’s roots. Best songs to crank : “The Prayer Position”, “Strength through Wounding” and “Malleus Malleficarum”.

Jawbreaker – Unfun

February 22, 2010

JawbreakerI think that a band’s overall sound can represent something larger than the band itself. Take Jawbreaker, for instance. Although their sound can be described, in a genre- specific sense, as a mix of early pop-punk (in the vein of Alkaline Trio) and alt-noise (in the vein of Sonic Youth) there’s a deeper sonic representation that I think better suits the band. They sound like the internal rage of the educated, middle-class, late 20s and early 30-somethings that hold remedial desk jobs that they can’t stand. How’s that for over your head?

ANYWAY, Unfun is the band’s first full-length album and also features the songs from their Whack and Blite EP. As I said before, there’s a striking similarity to early Jawbreaker and early Alkaline Trio. Up-beat song structures featuring rather dour subject matter. The difference being, Jawbreaker focuses on more philosophical, deep thinking lyrical approaches—even if they’re based on the simplest of ideas—and all buried beneath a wall of distortion.

The only reason this album didn’t get a full three stars (as cliché as those are) is the lack of memorability. Late stage Jawbreaker has songs that stick with you long after you’ve listened to it. Their early incarnation, although just as savage and clever, lacks the same quality and the lyrics are damn near unintelligible. Can’t have everything, I guess. Key tracks to enjoy – “Imaginary War,” “Busy,” “Wound” and “Eye-5”.

Devo and the focus-grouped comeback album

February 22, 2010

Monday night, Devo will publicly launch the marketing campaign for its forthcoming album -- its first in 20 years -- when the Los Angeles-via-Ohio band performs at the Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. With the release of the album not due until the spring, the Olympics appearance won't be the grand unveiling of new material, which principal Gerald Casale promises will occur at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. But if all goes according to plan, the path leading up to the final product may make for a better story, anyway. NOTE: Also go to the DEVO website at take the color test. Read more here >>>
