Annihilation Time – ANS – Sumarian Axe – Broken Patterns – at The Blvd Cafe – Los Angeles, CA

January 26, 2009

What do you do when two of the best bands of today go on tour together? You drive up to Boyle Heights to rage on a Monday night. With venues being limited in southern California, The Boulevard, a bar that appeared to be 18 and over, accommodated the almighty ANS and Annihilation Time.

Broken Patterns started off the night with a short set of their rockin tunes that sound like they could have been on the Beach Blvd. Comp. This band sounds solid and tighter each time I see them play and was a nice way to start the evening.

Next up was Sumerian Axe who I had never seen before but was familiar with their name and heard they had members of Street Trash in their ranks so I was excited to check them out. They seemed a bit more like the headliners with tunes rooted in classic rock but with more of a metal edge with great growling vocals and El Duce quotes here and there between songs. The singer was fun to watch and got me pumped for those heartthrobs from Texas, ANS.

Chris the singer exploded as soon as ANS hit the first chord and after seeing this band numerous times I was still blown away. Their energy was better than ever and musically they sounded well rehearsed and made it look easy. They played some tracks off the “Process Of Stoking Out” LP, like the great opening track “Somewhere Inside” seamlessly into the metal-infused Goon Destroyer. They also unleashed some new tracks from their upcoming LP on TankCrimes, which sounded as great as their already impressive catalog of releases.

Next up was the always incredible Annihilation Time. I don’t think this band could play bad if they tried. They opened with “Panic” and the crowd went nuts and actually was the first time the crowd started really moving. They went into “The Worm” and the crowd kept up the momentum. Singer Jimmy Rose was a little more reserved than usual and used the mic stand the whole set but most likely because room was definitely an issue.

They sounded great and went back and forth playing all the great tracks from II and III. They played an amazing version of “Victims Of The Vampire” by Slaughter and The Dogs and ended with “Imaginary Mirror” with people going nuts and a couple of the best crowd surfs I have ever seen. A request for “Bald Headed Woman” was yelled and fulfilled but without vocals but that song instrumentally is still amazing. The set was over, the night was over and ANS and Annihilation Time are on the road and hopefully coming to a town near you.

The Real McKenzies, Skizofrenik, The Threats, A Certain Death at Windsor Hotel Kirkcaldy, Scotland

January 24, 2009

Two car loads of us set off for the 2+ hour trip to Kirkcaldy.
The venue was a hotel function room and was very small so I couldn't believe there was going to be two hundred people in it.

Skizofrenik

Are 4 youngsters from Fraserburgh with an average age of 18. They have not that long started out having about 10 shows under their belt. They play covers versions and their own material and are getting better all the time. I would say the only downside is they need to speed up between songs, every song doesn't need a story (with a few of the crowd shouting get on with it). The crowd warmed up to them eventually, being first on can be difficult but they held their own.

A Certain Death

After years of learning their trade on the underground hard-core scene, rap, thrash n’ rollers Certain Death are about to release their debut e.p. it's an attempt at capturing the unique blend of humor, towering riffs, raucous Punk pace. They have in their line up ex- Exploited guitarist Steed.

The Threats

Threats started of life in 1977 as the reflectors. Just 4 local lads from Dalkeith in Midlothian Scotland who had a collective interest in music. Jim and Gogsy were next door neighbors from when they were born and grew up together. They have been playing gigs regularly for the last few years. Speaking to the guys before the show they tell me even though they are from Edinburgh they play more gigs in Kirkcaldy and have a good following there. That was true when they came on and played some old and new tunes, the crowd were pogo’n and jumping about.

The Real McKenzies

This band have bagpipes, wear kilts, sing about Scotland and come from Canada - I give you the real McKenzies! The band all had come to see. My friends had been going on about them and they were right. From the first notes of the bagpipes the crowd were down the front jumping about, singing along and totally enjoying the gig.

Paul McKenzie, the singer, leans over the barrier and the crowd jump up on the barrier and sing along with him. During the show mark's kilt fell off so he just played the rest of the show with only his guitar covering him!
This band play a high octane, very fast, loud show and it truly is one of the best live shows you can see.
