Backyard party with Tak’se Driver and others in Santa Ana, CA

December 27, 2008

The night was young, the air was cold, and Punks in leather and studs filled the pavement as they waited to go into the house hosting the backyard show in Santa Ana on Saturday night.

The gig began at 6pm, but people began to pack the yard near 7:30, and by 8, the yard was COMPLETELY full. Many of the people waited anxiously for the first band to go up, and upon hearing the strum of a guitar chord, the crowd began to form a circle, ready for the action to begin.

The first band to play was Santa Ana natives Tak'se Driver, a band with a sound so purely Punk rock, it lists the essence of Orange County and skateboarding as major influences. Tak'se Driver played a set with a variety of energizing songs to start a pit to, from fast and crazy anthems, to slow and steady beats while one catches their breath momentarily. Regardless of what types of songs the band played, the crowd was moved by the music, and the pit was busy and chaotic.

As if their Punk rock beats weren't enough to satisfy the crowd, lead singer Alex Cruz says into the microphone the most precious line anyone can ever utter: "WHO WANTS FREE BEER?" Alex Cruz then carries three different packs of beer and places them into the middle of the pit, and the crowd goes wild and dives in to have their free drinks.

Near the end of Tak'se Driver's set, the band continues to satisfy the crowd by playing covers that one cannot go wrong on doing. They began by covering Descendents' "Hope", but not before paying their respects to Descendents guitarist Frank Alvarez who passed away in October. Shortly after, they covered NOFX's "Stickin' In My Eye", TSOL's "Code Blue", and Adolescents' "Wrecking Crew". Tak'se Driver's talent provided justice to the covers, and an enthusiastic crowd that worked up an insane pit.

After Tak'se Driver's set, the show shifted direction and provided thrash metal for the audience that wanted even faster beats. Santa Ana's Unholy Force began to play their fast thrash beats, and both Punks and metalheads joined forces to wreck things up in the pit. Unholy Force covered Sepultura, but halfway through the song, the complaints of the neighbors caught up with show, and the show was called off.

Police waited outside, escorting all the people out of the backyard. The show was over by 10pm, and lasted only 4 hours. Though time was cut short, the show was a success in turnover and enjoyment. Santa Ana hosts backyard shows frequently, but this show surpassed the rest of the shows that have taken place this year. It was a good end to the year, and a great preparation to kick off the rest of the backyard shows that will come in the next year. If you've yet to attend an Orange County backyard show, you're in for a punch like you've never felt before; chaos, music, and good times await you in these yards, but don't just take my word for it, just show up the next time a backyard gig happens in a city near YOU!
