The Damned, The Adolescents and Wooly Bandits at House of Blues – Anaheim, CA

October 30, 2008

The Damned FlyerSold out shows at the House Of Blues are always a test of how much discomfort you're willing to endure to see a band that you love, but when the Damned and Adolescents are playing it's worth standing in a cramped space with not much seating to be there. Before the Adolescents went on the Wooly Bandits opened and playing a hybrid of Punk/roots rock which seemed to draw influences from later era X records. They mixed up their set with a cover of the Specials' "Gangsters," which they slowed down to add their own touch.

The Adolescents opened with "No Way" which appropriately sent the audience into a riotous upheaval. The rest of their set drew more songs from the Blue Album, "OC Confidential" and a brutal, extra dirgey performance of "Welcome to Reality." At one point during the set vocalist, Tony Cadena looked to Detours vocalist, Gordon Cox who was on the side of the stage and said "Hey we used to practice these songs in the garage on Katella" before facing the audience and slyly cracking "That was before you were all born, but you can bet your mothers were in the garage too." Their entire set was delivered with fury and they ended with a spot on rendition of "Kids of the Blackhole."

The Damned took stage with style and with the physical energy that they put out they put most bands thirty years younger than them to shame. There was a bit of disappointment with the band only playing a hand full of songs off of the first two records, but their performance was impeccable and they did squeeze out "New Rose," "Smash It Up," "Anti Pope," and "Neat Neat Neat." The Damned still seem completely natural on stage, like that's where they were born to be and it is no mystery why they are regarded as true rock stars of the Punk scene.
