The Aggrolites – S/T
August 21, 2010
To be frank, I like reggae (and all its forms: dub, reggae-ton etc) like I like Tequila—in small and infrequent doses. I also have to (sheepishly) admit that I had no idea that The Aggrolites were a reggae band. I saw them at Warped Tour in ’08 for a couple of songs and figured they were a ska band. Whoops.
With a sound somewhere between War and The Specials, The Aggrolites churn out some songs that sound like the picture-perfect summer party (“Fury Fire,” “Mr. Misery,” “Countryman Fiddle” and “Lighting & Thunder”) while others sound like a great afternoon nap (”Death at Ten Paces,” and “5 Deadly Venoms”).
It’s not to say that The Aggorlites aren’t good; in fact, the opposite is true. They craft some solid reggae tunes and the inclusion of the Organ is a welcome change from the other white-guy reggae bands (Sublime, Slightly Stoopid). It’s more of a matter that this album is only good for chilling and smokin’ out, both of which I’m not prone to do very often. So, listeners beware: if you’re going to plug this album into your car stereo you’d better be stationary for fear of falling asleep behind the wheel; it’s so laid back it would put you in a level of danger.
