February 12, 2011

Dr Dre Day with The Maxies - Toys The Kill - Pussy Cow - Jew Cocks - Blue Star Cafe - Los Angeles, CA - February 12, 2011The fifth annual Dre Day Kicked off at the Blue Star Cafe in downtown L.A. Dre Day is a celebration of Dr,Dre's birthday and has been presented every year for the last five years by LA based band Pu$$y Cow. "We originally got the idea from a bar in Minneapolis called the Triple Rock Social Club who throws a similar celebration for Dr.Dre." says Joe Dana. Pu$$y Cow plays every yearand past line ups have included acts as notable as Old Man Markley, Madison Bloodbath, Horace Weintraub, The Dharma Bums, The Mo Odds and Stab City. Each band has been required to cover at least one Dr.Dre related song. What started five years go in the form of a house party has since matured into a highly anticipated annual event.

The first band to play was LA band The Jew Cocks, consisting of front man and Bassist Todd Sender and Bassist Dan Catalinotto they were joined by guest drummer Kyle Souza and guest singer Bobby Vega ( Members of Stab City). The Jew cocks started the night of right by covering five Dre related Songs, "Forgot about Dre" 'My name is""Bitches ain't shit" "Lets get high" and "In Da Club" At one point during their set Todd sender offered the crowd a snack from a large jar of kosher pickles.

Shortly after an unidentified member of the audience started flinging pickle juice into the crowd. It was at that point, that you got the feeling the night would be filled with mischievous debauchery, all in good fun of course.

Next to take the stage was Pu$$y Cow. They covered "Gangsta Gangsta" "Califorina Love" and "Deep Cover". Its during these songs that you can really hear the technicality and structure of the music for exactly what it is. There are no DJ's Dropping backing tracks or synthesizers pumping out beats. Its just the music stripped down and the raw talent of the musicians performing it.

Their stage presence is high energy and very animated and they have the crowd watching their every move waiting to see what happens next. As they wrapped up their set, members of the audience cheered with forties of King Cobra held high into the air.

Recess Records band Toys That Kill took the stage next, the San Pedro band is Todd Congelliere , Sean Cole , Jimmy Felix,Chachi Ferrara. I had seen them once before in San Diego during Awesome fest where they played to a packed house. They seamlessly incorporated "Nobody move, Nobody gets hurt" into their song "They Tied up all our Lace" Their sound is pure punk rock and inspired the crowd to pit and jump around throughout the entire set. Toys That Kill is a band you definitely don't want to miss if they come to a town near you.

The Maxies, from Riverside (via Greenland) closed out the night. The Maxies are Android Maxie on Lead Guitar Sir Crusty Maxie on guitar,Maximum Maxie on Vocals, Sticks Maxie on Drums, Mad Maxie on Bass and Bi-Polar Bear Tom who brings the party (as well as dresses like a polar bear) Although they dress up and keep their faces covered there is no gimmick to this bands music which is power pop punk to its core. In the middle of their set they do their version of "Ain't no fun if the homies cant have none" approprialtly titled " Aint no fun if the Maxies cant have none" which is played to the back beat of the Ramones Blitzkreig bop. This unlikely mash up drove the crowd insane. They bring it fast and hard and they keep the bouncing crowd eating out of the palm of their hands begging for more.

All throughout the night these talented bands poured their hearts out, shed blood sweat and tears for none other then Dr.Dre. Dre Day has been a way to pay homage to one of our generations greatest producer and composer. It not only gives recognition to the man of the day, Dr.Dre, but it also evokes a sense of LA pride to anyone who grew up listening to Gangster Rap in the late 80s early 90s. Its a night all for the music and sends the message loud and clear that music knows no boundaries, it doesn't discriminate and it is meant for everyone.
