Crime Desire – O.K.? – Perdition – Mundo Muerto – Weekend Warrior – Long Beach, CA

January 6, 2010

This show was a 100% D.I.Y. effort at an art studio/living space and throughout the night the energy was through the roof. There was a fun, laid back atmosphere and everyone seemed to be there to enjoy themselves. There were no fights and there was no drama- just Punks being Punks and having fun. Members of all of the bands stuck around to support each other and there was a real sense of respect and cooperation. Weekend Warrior opened the show up with their brand of thrashy fastcore. They played with a lot of passion and at one point they took a short break from their set to talk about how it’s important for members of the working class to stay united for common goals and to avoid being manipulated by bosses and the powers that be. Their set had a positive vibe and they kept things short and Punk.

Mundo Muerto’s music varies from complete balls to the wall fast punk rock to a more mid paced, anthemic sound. There was a lot of pogoing going on and their set was a lot of fun. Their lyrics and most of their in between song banter were in Spanish so there was a bit of a language barrier but everyone in the band seemed to be enjoying themselves. Following Mundo Muerto, Perdition took the floor playing some gnarly Dischargey hardcore Punk. Their performance was an energetic display of no bullshit Punk rock.

San Diego’s O.K.? changed the tone of the night a bit with a more melodic and clean sounding peace Punk approach. Their singer had a bit of a reserved stage presence, but her vocals were strong. The band’s sound mixed Flux Of Pink Indians tempos with a sometimes dark guitar sound that was more in tune with Conflict. O.K.?’s performance was definitely a highlight of the night and they are a band worth checking out.

O.K.? and Crime Desire share a guitarist and are on tour with each other so set up time between the two bands was pretty quick. Crime Desire’s music is completely brutal and often has a dirgey feel to it. This was contrasted by their singer’s goofy stage presence. In between songs he said off the wall shit like "Yo someone here is trying to get in touch with Joe. We’re looking for Joe Blow or Joe Camel, Joe Sixpack." Meanwhile while they were playing their songs both the band and the audience were going ballistic for almost the entire time. Crime Desire’s set was a fitting end to a great show with the true D.I.Y. spirit. 2010 is looking good.
