Benefit show for Sweet Relief Musicians Fund – at Rock and Roll Pizza – Woodland Hills, CA

July 4, 2009

4th July provided no shortage of fun no matter where you were. One event among many was a fund raiser at Red Balls Rock & Roll Pizza in which all the profits from the pizza sold all day would be donated to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, which is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization. What they do is help provide financial assistance musicians who are struggling due to illness, disability or age-related problems.

The pizza that comes out of this place is certainly a big draw in itself and knowing that the more of it we powered down, the more money that would go to Sweet Relief, so we started out with this super large pie.

Out in the parking lot the sounds of 10 different bands played throughout the day to celebrate the 4th and support the fundraiser. What we found really odd was that Big Wheel turned out to be the only music media outlet to cover this event, strange. After all, this event was all about supporting an organization that supports the musicians in their hour of need.

Here’s a look at a few of the bands that performed for the cause with a few high lights.

Having some guitar problems during the set, a purple Hannah Montana guitar was offered up and did not sound too bad, so tour bands may want to look into investing one as a back up…haa haa. They also did a nice TSOL cover of Abolish Government/Silent Majority.

At about this point in the set on chick got there just in time, getting dropped off in front by her dad. Guess 20 years ago that may have been a pretty big hit up, but who cares a ride is a ride. No photos of the drop off will be shown as the dad was told to promptly split. F71 threw down the tracks off their new record and could do no wrong during their set.

The Billy Bones remain of one of the strongest remnant of the class of ‘77 in Los Angeles with frontman Billy Bones. Calling out many songs from his originating band, The Skulls, he said that these Skulls songs would be the last time they would be performed live. Billy Bones is looking forward to alot of new material that is currently in the recording process.

Lighting off some fireworks

Their set endured many technical difficulties, yet soldiered on and created plenty of fun moments that only Primadonna is capable of creating. The crowd embraced the performance and was involved all along. While playing their last song came a moment that could have won you $50,000 on America’s Funniest Home Video. Leadman Kevin Preston climbed up on top of the bass amp to sing from the highest point on the stage. Just as quick as he stood up on the amp his footing and the amp became unstable and Kevin came crashing down into the bass player, then taking out the other guitarist and then landing completey off the stage. After everyone recovered, the entire band reassembled back on stage to take a final bow – A sheer Rock and Roll perfomance!

As was noted at the beginging of this report, this event was a benefit for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Cruise on over to their website and see how you can help support the people that make the music we all enjoy.
