AWOL 69 – Dischords – Screwz – Superkill – Bastard Sons – at Surf City Saloon – Huntington Beach, CA

June 19, 2009

I got to this show just as Superkill were ending their set, but from everything that I heard both Superkill and Bastard Sons played great sets. Surf City is a pretty mellow bar with a strict policy against slam dancing, but it’s a cool place for low key events. Some great classic Huntington Beach Punk bands play there pretty regularly.

The Screwz, who have been playing with Scott Sisunik of Social Task on vocals, played a spot on set made up of their early material. The band’s energy was really up to a new level at this gig and their brand of politically incorrect Punk rock was right at home in this locals only bar. Sisunik really seems to becoming comfortable performing with this band and he managed to make the songs his own without betraying the band’s sound.

The Dischords played a reunion set with original drummer, Scot Kellems, and four replacement members, including members of Shattered Faith and the Hellers. They played a set of old songs, including "Carbon Copy" and other songs from the early 1980′s Dischords set list.

AWOL 69 were the main attraction of the night and despite vocalist, Tim Fyke’s drunken antics they remained together and had a great performance. Their set included several songs that were made popular by Doggy Style, who AWOL were a precursor to, as well as some other highlights like "AWOL" and "Accept It." As almost anyone would predict they ended their performance with "Donut Shop Rock" and invited members of the audience to join them on stage to sing along.
