The Spores – News Weather and Spores

January 5, 2010

The SporesThis record is an unusual and quirky treat from an obscure band out of Vancouver. These songs were all written between 1983 and 1988 and the sound mixes hardcore influences a la the Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion with some slight Wavy sensibilities similar to those of Oingo Boingo. Of course being from Vancouver they do share some similarities with DOA and the Subhumans.

These songs are punchy and unpolished with satirical lyrics that take on social issues with a sense of humor in songs like "Narcs In My Pants" and "Meat Biproduct," which seems to be an early example of a punk song advocating a vegetarian diet while also giving a twisted perspective on the subject matter. The best song on this C.D. is "Holy Cow" with its melodic execution and raw energy. This CD successfully brings light to a band that seem to have been largely overlooked. Any fan of unique and quirky punk rock should pick up this anthology.
