Deerhoof – Live Sessions EP
February 18, 2009
The start of 2009 signaled the coming of 3 inevitabilities: we would have a new president, and Deerhoof would release a new EP and full length. So far 2 of those things have come to light. The always prolific Deerhoof are back with the iTunes only, aptly named, Live Sessions EP. As you may have guessed this EP is compromised from mostly previously released songs recorded live in a studio. Except for “Milk Man” and “Blue Cash”, the rest of the songs come from their last two LP’s, Friend Opportunity and Offend Maggie.
I love Deerhoof. They are easily one of my favorite live bands of recent memory. As demonstrated here, they are incredibly tight, energetic and exciting, so much so that the songs on this EP pretty much exactly sound like the recorded versions on their respective LPs. While listening to it I kept thinking "what’s the point?"
Not to go off on a tangent here, but my problem with bands that release album after album is that after a certain point they all blend together. The Runner’s four? It was a good album but then Friend Opportunity came out and I stopped listening to it. This is what I call "The Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy Syndrome". They aren’t bad albums- they just get eclipsed by the rest of their output a few months later.
Haven’t bought any of the last 3 Deerhoof albums and want a sampling of their recent output? Fine. Otherwise you may as well save 4 bucks and listen to your old records while you wait for their next.
