Blatant Finger – self-released EP – Eight For The Road

February 12, 2009

Blatant Finger record imagePunk is always great no matter what form, what sub-genre, or what attitude it’s shaped into. What’s even better though, is when Punk meets Rock-N-Roll, combining the best of two worlds we can all enjoy and appreciate. That’s exactly what Blatant Finger has provided us with their self-released EP, "Eight For The Road". The EP, while only containing 8 songs, provides exactly the type of songs that the title makes self explanatory for: the road. The songs have such a quality of free spirited rock-n-roll times, you’ll almost plan out your own road trip just to bump the CD on full blast.

Among the songs are a variety of little treats, such as a Rolling Stones cover of the song "As Tears Go By", and a Poison cover of the ever popular song, "Every Rose Has it’s Thorn". You’re probably thinking, "Poison? Cheesy." And you’re right. But what makes the cheesiness of the cover pretty gnarly, is how the band turns an awful 80s hair metal song into an awesome feel good song by bringing up the tempo, providing that Punk/Rock-N-Roll edge to it, and enhancing it with an electric violin, an accordion, and an organ, which members Shayne Underwood and Aaron Lehmann of The Bloody Irish Boys play in the song.

The EP makes you yearn for more of this band, which is a pretty contagious feeling once you grab hold of the EP. It’s understandable though, especially when it sounds as good as Blatant Finger. The sound of the band in the EP bears resemblance to bands such as Social Distortion and The Crowd. It resembles Social D in its mix of old school Rock-N-Roll, and it bears its resemblance to The Crowd through its punk side. Not a bad comparison, and if you like those bands, then make sure to check out Blatant Finger’s EP "Eight For The Road", out and available now for your hearing pleasure.
