No More Saints – Consum LP

March 30, 2013

This 5 piece sounds like some 90's Nardcore stuff. It's a good quality recording with a nice orange splatter vinyl record. Not too fast but still pretty strong.

Kinda reminded me of a Nardcore version of "Code Of Honor" at times. Yeah, there was some typical stuff here and there (slow intro's,then WHAM...goes fast) but still a nice effort with good production. With 16 songs on this LP, you will get your money's worth and to top it off it's a decent album to add to your collection.

Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine – White People & the Damage Done

March 30, 2013

Photography is my thing, not reviewing albums, but when I listened to the new Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo School of Medicine -   “ White People and the Damage Done” the much anticipated 2nd album out on the 2nd of April.

The 1st one was in 2009 and with only an Ep in between to keeps us going. I thought would try and say some words. A mixture of Dead Kennedy’s and San Francisco Punk style, all topics is voiced from homelessness to Wall Street.

“Brown Lipstick Parade” is the 1st song on the album - Who else could start an album off with the lyrics “we are the Illumni Nazis” With his very recognizable voice and music intermixed with spoken word, greed corruption, bigotry and war are all covered here in this song.

“John Dillinger” was made public enemy no.1 but this song says there is more public enemies than this and that we make some people scarier than they need to be to take our minds of the real scary people, politicians, and corporate companies.

“Werewolves of Wall Street” is about the greed of people who seem to have enough money and want more.

“Road Rage” is a really fast paced song about hating everything.

“Mid East Process”  is about the on going conflict in Palestine- Israel.

“Burgers of Wrath” is a revamped version of the original which was done in 1994 with Mojo Nixon and I have seen quoted by Jello that this is his best song he has ever written on unemployment and homelessness.

“Shock–u Py” – homage to all the recent occupies campaigns that have taken place. People have a right to be heard and will never go away.

These are my interpretations of these songs. The rest of the album is great too and there are bonus mixes of 4 of the songs. All in all a great album for old and new Jello fans, and I cant wait to see him live at Rebellion punk festival 2013.

Avenue Rockers – Damaged and Dangerous

March 24, 2013

So here we are almost a year removed from the last Punk Rock Bowling, and one of the memories that stood out in my mind from the weekend was attending a pool party in which DJ Lawless could not make after coming down with a serious flu virus days before.

Although at the time this information was not available so the people in attendance aimlessly stood around waiting several hours with no music and the sun beating down, then two men rose to the occasion one being David Luna. Now, with Punk Rock Bowling 2013 bearing down on us I am once again introduced to David although this time through the debut album of his band Avenue Rockers. The album “Damaged & Dangerous” is 13 tracks of seamless transitioning through punk and ska provoking memories of rancid also with a great track like “A Bar A Brawl & A Brothel” conjuring up visions of Sam The Sham & The Pharos except with leathers and studs.  With tracks about Dead Centerfolds, a 58’ Plymouth, Punk idols and hookers, this album covers just about every base I can think of. Mixed in with aggressive Punk hooks on tracks like “’77 Girls” and “45 Chinese Red” this album keeps you enthralled from begining to end. Any fans of Rancid should definetly check out Avenue Rockers.

White Flag Down – Never Surrender EP

March 24, 2013

Los Angeles' own White Flag Down describes themselves as "Rock and Roll done wrong mixed with everything else done right". It's probably easier to argue that this is purely street Rock and Roll done absolutely right.

"Never Surrender" is a six song EP released by the band in 2012. The sound has a strong Oi flavor, heavily infused with Punky Rock and Roll, and the whole thing is a damn fun listen. "Burn It Down" kicks off the album with a military style "fuck you" from the working class, and "Long Day" immediately follows with a raucous ode to booze, women, and getting away from it all. The record stomps on through to "Watch Yourself", another two finger warning to anyone thinking of messing with the band's beer flow. Over all, the only thing I can't recommend this album for is driving. Less than two songs in, I looked down and noticed I was doing an easy 95 mph, and I just don't make enough to cover that speeding ticket.

False Alarm – Buspar for Bedbug

March 24, 2013

The liner notes for this album outline a sporadic history with short bursts of activity, and long breaks. It also outlines a pretty impressive list of big names in Punk Rock. From Fat Mike to Cheetah Chrome, it seems like despite the band's long periods of inactivity, everyone has had a finger in this pot at one time or another.

"Buspar for Bedbug" includes studio tracks recorded in 2001 and 2002, as well as live rehearsals, and tracks from the band's start in 1983, and a reunion in 1998. There's a few songs everyone will recognize, including "Vietnamese Baby" and "High Tension Wire". Original songs cover some of the usual Punk Rock topics about not liking the government, being a frustrated youth, and so on. Most of the songs are reminiscent of the minimalist melodic SoCal Punk bands that ended up on Bomp like The Last or The Urinals, but the constantly shifting lineup is apparent in the songs. Viewed as a compilation CD, this is a great album, and collectors or rabid fans will probably want it in their collection just because of the names involved. Early Post-Punk fans should definitely give this one a listen.

Haskala – Untethered and Undone

March 16, 2013

Haskala - Untethered and UndoneWith a genre like ska spanning several generations, it is not hard to find a specific band for people of different preferences and ages. Los Angeles band Haskala exemplifies the depth and wide range of what Ska music has to offer.

With their debut album “Untethered & Undone “ being literally just that, the band recorded their first ever performance at the world famous Molly Malone’s in Hollywood giving rise to this 12-track album.

For it being the first performance as an ensemble, this album flows with a sense of fluidity throughout. Mixed in with some impromptu story telling and “Shtick”, it cant help but draw comparisons to 90’s counterparts like The Aquabats, Planet Smashers and to a certain extent Real Big Fish. The catchy pop Ska melodies blended with a bluesy harmonica and a Kazoo as well as the presence of front man Steven Schub and Dan Kay from Dirty Rotten Horns on trumpet make for a nice listen. There are definite stand out tracks like their cover of The Beatles “Taxman” and “Woke Up Wake Up” to enjoy. I can envision Haskala on the same bill with the likes of The Aquabats conveying that same type of general fun and pop Ska dance energy. Fans of that style of Ska will no doubt flock to Haskala.
