CicLAvia – Bike Event – Los Angeles, CA

October 9, 2011

CicLAvia - Bike Event - Los Angeles, CA - Sunday October 9, 2011CicLAvia means “bike way” in Spanish. About 30 years ago Ciclovía originally started in Bogotá, Colombia which was a weekly street closure event…. and NOW Los Angeles. Sunday's event would mark the 3rd one of these that has been held since it's inception in 2010. There really is no official starting place or finish to this bike event, participants pretty much join the fun wherever they want along the 10 mile route. For many though, they considered the starting point of the event to be at the corner of Melrose and Heliothope where Read more

Steve Jobs was the rebel with a cause – RIP 1955-2011

October 6, 2011

Steve Jobs
The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world… are the ones who do

Steve Jobs was certainly way ahead of the times, going way way back. As technology develops at the pace it does, sometimes what can be thought up and created in the mind’s eye, is just not possible to become reality when an idea is birthed. However it is the focus on the vision that can help shape the future, no matter how far away the future may be. Then there is the aspect of if the public is ready to embrace something so new that breaks away from the conventional thinking of the moment. Steve Jobs along with his development team helped push the envelope which in turned helped push others in the technology arena regardless of if it was Windows based or not. No matter what brand you speak of, it is that competitive challenge that creates innovation in the devices that we all use everyday as we go about our lives.

There are gonna be those around that will question why all the fuss over this guy’s passing to which the answer can easily be found in the life of the questioner. A person who has virtually no achievements to speak of in their own life will always give themselves away when they would question “why all the fuss”. Luckily there are a majority of people who have an appreciation for Steve and his contributions to the culture no matter what computer they own, what phone they have in their pocket or the device they use to listen to music. He is a symbol of how anyone can come from humble beginnings and create an impact on the world around them.

The world we live in will never be the same with regards to how we communicate, the way we work with technology to create and how we enjoy our music on various devices. So with the passing of Steve, sure it is sad that a talent like this has to exit, stop for moment and realize that his life’s work is truly something to be celebrated.

Thank you Steve Jobs, your fingerprints will be felt for many generations to come which is the best form of everlasting life.

Is it gonna be possible for MySpace to come back from the dead?

October 4, 2011

In it's prime, MySpace was a great networking site, then came all the spammers in the form of bands that put out a bulletin out every hour on the hour (which was the big clue that it was a gig not worth attending), and then there were the people who really had nothing going on that needed to put out bulletins all day long to tell you how bitchen their life was (NOT). A big death nail came when they changed the entire user experience and made the site very clunky. Two simple ways that MySpace could fix itself would be to go back to the user interface of 2005 and then impose a charge of $5 for every bulletin after the user exhausted their two free bulletins per day.

Myspace's rejuvenation will hinge on streamlining and simplifying the site and promoting its key asset: an extensive trove of music and videos from major-label and independent artists and unsigned acts.

"The great thing is pretty much everybody knows about Myspace, but the favorable opinion of Myspace has fallen off," Specific Media and Myspace Chief Executive Tim Vanderhook said in an interview. "For that to happen, it's about the product and the experience." >>> Read More HERE

Nirvana’s photographer Kirk Weddle recalls the day in Pasadena he shot Nevermind’s cover

October 4, 2011

Here is a great interview from the LA Weekly with the guy who shot the cover of Nirvana's Nevermind album. "Faux"tographers take note, here was a regular guy with some skills, not trying to be famous and gets a call to go do a shoot. On any given night in Los Angeles all of us have seen the "faux"togs that obstruct our view on a band while they create the imaginary world in their mind that they are gonna be the next Kirk Weddle.

You might not know his name, but you certainly know his work. On the 20th anniversary of "Smells like Teen Spirit"'s debut on MTV, LA Weekly spoke with Kirk Weddle, who shot the cover image of Nevermind. This post is full of great pictures from that shoot, plus a particularly rare one at the bottom.

Weddle, who lives in Austin, told LA Weekly all about the gloomy June day he spent underwater in a dirty pool in Pasadena with Nirvana back in 1991. The label didn't want to fork over $7,500 to license a stock image so they hired Weddle, who shot all of the underwater photographs for $1,000.  >>> Read More HERE

Butthole Surfers – Charles Bradley – 400 Blows and Hands will play at The Echoplex this Saturday and Sunday

August 25, 2011

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Butthole Surfers – Charles Bradley – 400 Blows and Hands
will play at The Echoplex this Saturday and Sunday – August 27 and August 28, 2011

The Echoplex has announced that the Butthole Surfers and 400 Blows will play this Saturday, Aug 27 and (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah had to cancel because they could not get a flight out of New York due to the hurricane), Charles Bradley and Hands on Sunday, Aug 28.  Tickets are available through ticketweb.com. The NY based band, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was one of the first artists to reschedule after the announcement of the Sunset Junction Festival cancellation; the event was slated for this weekend, Aug 27 & 28 and expected 60,000 attendees over the two days. The Silver Lake-neighborhood outdoor festival, which would have had its 31st year, was denied permits from the city of Los Angeles due to pass fees not being paid. It was a dramatic finale but many of the artists scheduled for the event adopted the adage of  "the show must go on"  and found new locations. Read more
